It doesn't matter what you do at home. Your computer is your business. However, if you refuse to run an AV no matter the platform in an enterprise/business environment, you put everyone at risk.
To break it down:
At home: Do what you want
At work: Run an antivirus program
Very simple.
In a word: yes. There were endless comments on Slashdot Monday (May 8) of the form: "If microkernels are so good, why aren't there any?" Actually there are. Besides MINIX 3, there are:
* QNX
* Integrity
* PikeOS
* Symbian
* L4Linux
* Singularity
* K42
* Mac OS X
* HURD
* Coyotos
Google has no interest in becoming a cell phone company and with a recession looming the 700MHz spectrum now seems worth a whole lot less
Who said anything about a recession? You do not know you are in a recession until after it happens. How do you know we're not spiraling into a depression?
c) You must license the entire work, as a whole, under this
License to anyone who comes into possession of a copy. This
License will therefore apply, along with any applicable section 7
additional terms, to the whole of the work, and all its parts,
regardless of how they are packaged. This License gives no
permission to license the work in any other way, but it does not
invalidate such permission if you have separately received it.
I fail to see what.Mac and Google apps have to do with this. With devices such as iPhone (it integrates with.Mac according to the rumours - and I have no doubts that Google will be offering some service/product of value to this market) you can still have your centralized home server and a need for those services.
Maybe not K-12, but this is definitely the case in higher education. Think about how many research/dorm room projects have started out of higher ed: Google from Stanford, ISS from Georgia Tech, and the list goes on. These companies will typically reciprocate a little cash flow back into the university from which it originated.
What about Eclipse? I started out developing C# on Windows and have since moved to concentrate on Java and Python. To me, Eclipse is a far superior IDE. Most programmers that I know don't say "I think I will write this app for Windows because VS.Net is easy to use". Instead, most say "I think I will write this app for Windows because that is what I will make the most money on." Open source must walk a fine line to stay competitive in capitalist economies.
This is absurd. Just go here and follow the instructions.
Three steps.
1. Create.reg file by copy/pasting from that page.
2. Create.vbs file by copy/pasting from that page.
3a. Create GPO to import reg key and run VBScript on Win2k machines at Startup.
or
3b. In absence of AD, modify script to copy itself and.reg file to all Win2k machines and apply fix.
If you're such a small organization that you don't have an I.T. group.. then.. it's probably simple to use TZEdit to update your piddly network.
For fun, you can trick out the script to make sure it only runs once.
Seriously....I even wrote a wrapper for the tzmove executable that impersonates the domain admin so that our users could run that fix without needing admin rights. This is not as big of a deal as everyone thinks it is. Every sys admin that I know (that actually works in an enterprise environment) has already taken care of this.
And in regards to the person wondering how much money Congress has is causing people to lose because of this...when isn't Congress inflicting undue costs on businesses?:P
..."Microsoft aims 'to eliminate the openness of the Internet, to proprietize the Internet, the lawyer said, adding the groundwork will be laid in Microsoft's forthcoming new operating system, Vista.'"...
Yeah, good luck on that one. Considering most DNS/web servers run *nix/Cisco and Apache (respectively) I do not see how a desktop OS could 'proprietize' the Internet...there are too many server admins out there that are *nix junkies. If M$ somehow does stop networks from talking to each other, it will defy the essential definition of the Internet. Then the world will go back to the 1970's before Arpanet joined everyone together.
I think this is the mentality of someone who has given up. Maybe this guy is sick of his job, hates his family, and loathes getting up in the morning. What kind of example are you setting for your staff if you make retarded statements like this?

the BETAMAX vs. VHS war
the DVD-R vs. DVD+R war
the LP vs. CD war (LPs do sound better!!!)
"Format" wars will happen. It's a good thing: it shows progression in technology. Get over it.

oh no. You got me.
From Section 5:
I guess they just upped the 16MB cache many drives have now. Makes sense to do with native command queuing being as versatile as it is.

If you are a student, Wolfram offers some pretty decent site-licensing deals with educational institutions. (Consult your local higher ed facility)
Yes, and since there seems to be so much blogspam maybe we should just call it blam!

As long as it tastes good and doesn't kill me (right away).
I'm pretty sure we have....

It is the bane of the capitalists' existence.
Now I can undo what I did the night before.

Exactly...at least they are trying. As long as they *are* fixing it, who cares what they are hiding. Just fix the damn thing! :)
must be really slow today.
