Y'know, sometimes I just want an app to do ONE SIMPLE FUCKING TASK. And I want that app to do it well.
Firefox still works just fine for me. Throwing in a bunch of other crap that I don't need (bloatware) is just waiting to exploited.
I just bought a new laptop, and I was disgusted by the amount of CRAP that was preinstalled on this thing. I have never, EVER needed a friggin firewall, and this computer has THREE of them. Connecting to the internet to do the simplest of tasks resulted in no less 6 system warnings asking me "if it was okay to connect".
I dumped the entire system.
I'd install Linux, but I can't find drivers for half this crap. Furthermore, the majority of my software doesn't run on it (3D Studio, Macromedia Flash Studio, Photoshop). There aren't any suitable Linux replacements for those apps.
Back to this "FLOCK" thing. I hope this fails. The last thing we need is more crap to clutter our systems. We just need things to work, and we need to revert back to simplicity.

I wouldn't consider this to be a Tablet PC, as much as it is a PDA.
I was recently in the market for a Tablet PC, because of the overwhelming amount of graphics work that I do. 3D, 2D, sketches, full-color rendering, raster, vector... Tablet PC would be perfect for this because there simply isn't a substitute for drawing directly on the surface of your work. External tablets, mouse, etc. aren't sufficient and don't give nearly the same feeling as "painting on canvas" does.
Unfortunately, I didn't end up buying a Tablet PC because they are overpriced and most of them lack decent hardware. Since this will be my primary PC, so it still needs to be able to play my GAMES.
If there was a viable Linux alternative, I'd look into it, but this Nokia doesn't cut it.
I was complaining about the obvious jab at what is supposedly journalism at Slashdot. I don't care who hates MS, nor why.
I really do expect a lot from the Slashdot crowd, and especially the admins to keep their biases to a minimum. We all have our favorite apps, OSes and Hardware. But I cannot take anything at Slashdot seriously these days, because the final solution is going to be "Linux".
Ever tried to consult a small business and convince them to go to Linux? They paid $25,000 for a license to use a Proprietary System... they aren't going to DROP Windows just because I say so. Especially when that Proprietary System doesn't support Linux.
Could I bring this question to the Slashdot crowd? FUCK NO. Because the solution will always boil down to "Linux will be cheaper in the end".
We've gone way off topic. My original gripe is about the Admins obvious jab at Microsoft- which was totally uncalled for.
Okay ass-puppet. How about giving me some viable solutions to replace MEDIA APPLICATIONS. I provide 3D images, vector images, bitmaps/photomanipulation, etc. Currently I use products by Adobe, Corel and Macromedia.
LOL... woooo Linux can play MOVIES and MP3s. Wow. So can my friggin stand-alone DVD player.
What an annoying poke at Microsoft, but I suppose I shouldn't expect anything less from the ass-puppets at Slashdot. It must be nice to have all your worlds problems boiled down to one fucking target... a FUCKING HUGE target.
Linux works fine, but it doesn't allow me to be productive. I leave Linux to do its job where it really shines: Office labor, Servers, etc. The selection of Software available for Graphic and Media are simply pathetic for Linux. I prefer to use a Mac or XP for that.
Instead of being an ass-puppet, why don't you admit that you'll use any OS available to get the job done? Upholding Linux as the end-all solution is just as fucking stupid as saying Windows is the end-all solution.
When my friends and I play Halo2, we literally laugh our asses off at some of our antics. I just think that the medium has so much more to offer rather than just a bunch of speculation and chatter. Some of the commentary is funny, but it is equally funny in comic-strip format, or even simple audio.
The video simply contributes NOTHING. Plus it is a waste of bandwidth/storage.
I wanna see them pull some Dukes of Hazzard stunts with that Warthog.
YeeeeeeeeeeeeHAAAAaaaaa!
Red vs Blue isn't that great. Sure, it can be funny in a stupid sort of way. But there are far better methods of entertainment out there. Hell, I'd rather read an online comic strip. Or watch something that acually makes use of ANIMATION (like Homestar) rather than just a bunch of talking heads.
Red vs Blue reminds me of the Garfield comic strip. Gee, what's Garfield up to today? Sitting on the table and talking to John? And he hates Mondays? And he steals Johns Lasagna then smacks Odie in the teeth? HAAHHAAHAH friggin Hilarious, that Garfield is such a cad.
Please note that I covered about 99% of all Garfield comics in ONE PARAGRAPH.
This is idiotic. I reinstalled Windows XP on my machine 4 months ago and NEVER UPDTATED WINDOWS. I run Firefox, I don't use MS Office, I download freeware apps all the time, visit all kinds of odd websites and haven't had a single problem.
I use Norton Antivirus and thats about it (it hasn't discovered a single virus since reinstall). Am I lucky? Probably, but I haven't had any problems in the past either.
12 minutes my ass. Use common sense people, and you won't have to run scared.
BTW, I'm really looking forward to trying out Mac OS on my Intel machines. I use Linux, so I am not a Win Fanboy.
I've been Playing Guild Wars since October of last year. Its not terribly new to me. Yes, I opened the friggin box when it finally shipped, grabbed a PvP Character and owned everything for a while.
In fact, it is still entirely possible to open the box and win a few PvP matches. The Moron Ratio is extremely high in Guild Wars (I think you have proven that).
It isn't a matter of getting better skills, its how you use the skills that you have. I said nothing about individual leetness- you are the one that seems to be promoting that with retoric about how you can't "open the box and be competitive". Bullshit, I did it, with pick up groups.
I can't really claim that now, because I have unlocked so many skills, upgrades and Runes that my PvP builds no longer qualify as "out of the box".
If you couldn't open the box and remain competitive, that isn't my problem. You still have to WORK at it, just like any other game. As I stated before, I had put in numerous hours before the game even launched.
Nowadays, a person could literally buy the game, compete in PvP, earn Faction points to buy Runes, Upgrades, Skill points, and redeem them as low as Ascalon City (except for Elite Skills).
A full team dedicated to strategy and teamwork is required. One person alone can't win PvP and everyone knows that.
Okay Retard, I'll make this really simple for you.
Whether or not Guild Wars is an MMOG isn't the point. Indeed, a team of 8v8 is possible. Who gives a rats ass about the thousands of other players online?
I sure as hell don't. With Wow, I don't care if there are 30 billion players online- the only thing I care about is the person I about to smear into a bloodstain, and the person that is about to pound me into submission.
MMOGs in GENERAL are just graphics slapped over the top of a Chat Client. The problem is WoW isn't designed for casual players. Guild Wars is so fucking streamlined that they can offer NO MONTHLY FEE. Patches are transparent, exploits are fixed without so much as a hiccup.
PvP is challenging enough for Hardcore player. Guild Wars allows you to build a level 20 player and compete- STRAIGHT OUT OF THE BOX. I guarantee you'll get slapped silly though, because levels won't save your ass in Guild Wars. In fact, you can have all the skills, the highest rated weapons, highest rated armor, and I guarantee you'll STILL get your ass stomped. You'll get your ass stomped until you change your attitude and realize that the people you are fighting are actually BETTER than you- they don't have any uber skills to win.
It will give you the same feeling you had the first time you got killed with a knife in CounterStrike. "How the fuck did he kill me with a KNIFE?"
I can level to a certain point, but eventually, levels don't help me at all- I need to use my BRAIN and pure strategy to win. This allows me to play at my leisure, and jump in and out of games just as quickly as CounterStrike.
So... if Guild Wars isn't an MMOG, thats actually a good thing. The Gameplay of Guild Wars is light years ahead of any other MMO out there.
I guess I am the only one that thought the Halo storylines sucked ass. Predictible and assinine, and a bit too fluffy for my liking. What the hell is up with all the purple and PINK? Are we fighting the Care Bears?
And DESPITE Torrents, Revenge of the Sith has BROKEN ALL RECORDS, and brought the movie industry out of its slump. How much money do these MPAA fags suspect that Torrents ripped them off exactly?
If Torrents DIDN'T exist, would Episode III have accumulated 100 million on its FIRST DAY, as opposed to 50 million, which broke records for single day ticket sales?
I swear to God, some people simply can't think straight, and they need to be shot just for acting stupid.
I really don't understand the big deal about movies like this showing up on the internet. I PAID to see it at midnight last night- would I like to download it if I could find a solid and fast connection? YES! Will I still buy it on DVD? YES! Will I likely buy the boxed edition of all SIX, even though I have the limited edition AND the revised editions? YES!
Well, it looks like George Lucas and the MPAA is getting their money out of me, what the hell is the big deal here? The fact that the MINORITY probably hasn't paid to see it? There isn't a SINGLE resource out there that will tell you how many of those people that are DLing this crappy version have already PAID to see it- and they will likely PAY to see it again and again (on DVD, etc).
Think of it this way: When you look at an image, you can immediately identify specific parts of that image and declare it almost immediately "THATS A CAR"
For him, multiplying numbers is just as simple, and immediately recognizable. He doesn't have a superbrain that multiplies the numbers faster than anyone else, he simply takes a completely different approach to solving the problem.
We recognise things based on many of our senses- we recognise the tartness of blackberries, the prick of a thorn, the smell of black pepper that puts us on the verge of a sneeze. We recognise colors, and our minds can think so abstractly that we can merely look at an image and determine that the woman in the photo has soft skin.
So this particular autistic fellow isn't simply replacing the number 5 with Red and 2 with Yellow, and combined they make Orange (7). Instead, numbers are something different, the sum of their parts to create a complete image in his mind. They make sense to him, but to you it would be like looking at an abstract painting trying to determin e what it means.
Interestingly many Autistic people have difficulties with the simplist task. Recognizing someones facial expression is nearly INSTANTANEOUS to me and you, just like this Autistic person can multiply numbers very quickly.
However, he might not be able to look at a person and describe their facial expression or the emotion behind that expression. In fact, he can't even tell right from left, an impossible task for him that you can usually figure out in less than a second.

I have a legal copy of 3D Studio. So there really isn't any purpose for me to struggle with Blender, especially if it offers zero advantages when I can achieve the exact same thing in less time in 3DS.
I gave Blender a try for a week. Bad design all around- it tries too hard to make sure you see ALL of its functionality all at once.
Granted that 3DS is a complex program as well, but within a weeks time I was fully animating characters and rendering complex objects.
What it all comes down to is the fact that applications and tools are only as good as their functionality. If that functionality is zero, then it offers NOTHING to the user.
The sole reason I have not moved to Linux is because I cannot find functional tools to do my job. GIMP is a non-solution for me. If I wouldn't dare use it in Windows, why the hell would I use it in Linux?
I applaud you if you can get usage out of GIMP and Blender. Kudos to you. But until I find satisfactory replacements for Photoshop, Paint Shop Pro, CorelDRAW, and 3D Studio, I'm simply not going to jump into anything just for the sake of "getting used to it". I have a toolset that allows me to do my job perfectly fine, so far anything else I have tried is simply moving backwards.
I have driven a Formula 1 car (at about 15 MPH). Everything is much more stiff and rigid, but it was still driveable. I've even driven massive deliver trucks. The whole thing is, I was able to get the vehicle moving down the street within a matter of seconds.
Comparing GIMP to Photoshop is more like comparing the driveability of a '76 Camaro to an AH-64 Apache helicopter. Sure, both can get you to the grocery store, and it is debateable which would be easier to handle (depending on your training).
We are allowed to have preferences. The fact that users quickly adapt to Photoshop, while GIMP confuses them isn't the fault of the user. It is an overall design issue.
If GIMP had become the predominant app decades ago, we wouldn't be having this discussion. We'd be complaining that Photoshop has a bad UI instead. However, we STILL cannot discount the fact that GIMP does not follow the standard UI design of most Windows/Mac applications.
And FINALLY, if GIMP would simply use a standard interface, many users like me would have a reason to move to GIMP, and indeed Linux. But as it is now, we don't.
Yeah, I think a Tombstone logo is in order here. But not for the same reasons as the original poster.
I don't use BSD, I never have. But I can easily recognise the Daemon character, just as easily as the Linux Penguin.
Once this easily recognizable character is gone, I really won't have anything to associate with BSD, and it will quickly fade from my memory.
GIMP is pathetic beyond all comprehension. That mess is inexescusable, and only surpassed by the crap-UI of BLENDER.
There is a acceptable threshold, an allowable learning curve for most tools. It takes a little while to get used to driving a new car- wipers/headlight switches are in a different place, shifting may be smoother, the whole car acts differently.
But you can still DRIVE it out of the parking lot.
If GIMP was a car, it would have you strapped to the bottom of the chassis, looking backwards and steering with your feet.
Anyone that has a rebuttal consisting of "Following Adobes UI design would be stupid because it lacks right button support, blah, blah, blah"... YOU DON'T HAVE AN ARGUMENT. Sticking with GIMPS UI flaws, simply because you don't like Adobe (as a company), or Adobes particular UI doesn't fix anything. In fact, it is what leads GIMP to its paralyzed pathetic UI state that we have now.
Adobes interface follows UI design that is consistent with EVERY Windows/Mac program I have ever seen. While there are massive differences between Photoshop and PaintShop Pro, I can easily jump between the two progams almost seamlessly because they share a common design theory. GIMP literally requires me to rewire my brain to think the way "someone with extremely bad organizational skills" would think.
Copying Photoshops UI won't solve anything. But if people would simply get over the fact that Adobe DIDN'T INVENT GOOD UI DESIGN, you'll quickly understand that Adobe simply follows the rules of good design. Beyond that, you can add right-click menus, etc.
Firefox is indeed a good example here. The visible UI is so identical to Internet Explorer that I often forgot that I was using Firefox under normal browsing conditions. It was only when I needed to change options, and other "under the hood" items that I realized how different it is.
And "under the hood" is the only place where the real differences should be.
PLEASE for Gods sake, don't make this game 3D. I know it will be 3D, and the BEST we can hope for will be cell-shading.
That alone is just a shame. Nothing destroys the look of a 2D character like trying to force them into a 3D world. 2D characters have their own unwritten physics, whereas 3D is to stiff.
Look at the old cartoons, where they used a lot of squash and stretch for motion (2D). We don't see that anymore, because of this 3D crap- someone needs to write a solid squash and stretch 3D engine.
Shouldn't the headline read "Computer learns to play A game", rather than making it sound like this computer is capable of learning the rules of multiple games?
I was thinking this computer could learn to play Monopoly or something. Rock Paper Scissors, and it can apparently learn only ONE game.
Big whoop.
There is still PvP, and those areas are designated. PKing is virtually pointless anyway- PKers are usually weak players with strong weapons or spells. Those types get beat down EASILY in PvP because they don't know how to use skill.
KSing is Kill-Stealing.
No, it isn't a game of chance. You don't battle one-on-one.
You have to learn to take advantage of your teams strengths and exploit the opponents weaknesses. For the most part, a Warrior battling an Elementalist is a bad idea (Warrior has superior armor but lower damage output, Elementalist has inferior armor with high damage output).
However, a Mesmer on your team could really throw both for loop. So while you may not be able to tackle certain opponents, your team members fill in the gaps.
This is how monks remain relevent (and Monks aren't just for healing, there are protection and smiting monks as well).
Y'know, sometimes I just want an app to do ONE SIMPLE FUCKING TASK. And I want that app to do it well.

What the hell happened to the formatting of my text? Honestly, there WERE paragraphs in my post. Apparently, I'm a gimp.
