Caller: There's an accident.
Operator: Where are you?
Caller: I don't know
Operator: Ok, I see your phone number here, what is happening right now?
Caller: There's a few cars piled up and there's some bodies on the street.
Operator: Ok, let me see if I can find a camera, hold please............
*1 1/2 minutes later*
Operator: Ok, I found you, I'm dispatching an ambulance and a police officer.
Now I know that's pretty extreme, but when you have an emergency situation, you can't be fiddling with finding the right camera so you don't accidentally over-commit emergency resources. It's on the order of, "better too much than not enough".
How will that let 911 operators do their job better?
How does *almost seeing* the situation help? I mean, granted, they're probably not going to be the crappy webcam quality cameras we think they are, but still it escapes me how this will actually proactively help an 911 operator help a victim. It might help them after the fact, but not before or during.
....is to know the unknown. So unless you wrote every program you use on a daily basis operate in a vacuum with *zero* connection to the outside world, it is impossible to be "hackerproof".
If you ever get an email asking how long it took for you to get a specific movie, *never* under any circumstances tell them you received it early. They will stall shipment of future movies to make sure you're not getting more than they think you should get per month. They've been getting worse and worse about this.
By reading these responses, thats what one would think the article said. haha!

They both want government regulation. They just happen to want regulation for different things. To say that one doesn't and the other does, is just plain ignorant. Now as far as liberal vs conservative on IP regulation, that's a tough nut. There will always be people from both sides of the fence that will want some sort of regulation because it's not just the wealthy who come up with some "great ideas". They just happen to be the people that can make the ideas happen and hire lawyers to enforce the "regulation" of said idea.
From the looks of the 20 key keypad, it looks like it's going to use a form of predictive text that would help the "QWERTY" users more than the traditional T9 SMS user. I hope they hit the T-Mo stores soon so I can take it for a test drive.
Is anyone else surprised at how slow the probe was traveling when it hit the earth. That "tumbling/rotating" did a good job of slowing it. Maybe next time they can try an airbag system or something else that is less problematic than a mortar fired parachute system.
I'm surprised MS can get away with "broadcasting" those radio stations' call letters. That might be an FCC violation as IIRC the call letters are registered with a license that the FCC issues each operating radio station.
They've done a great job at marketing this new product. I guess they held a party and had a few dozen celebs pose for photos with the device. Everyone from Jesse James (Monster Garage) to Tony Hawk swears by their Sidekick. Which says a lot because they can pretty much afford anything.
I had the first version with the drab gray screen and found it was an awesome PDA/Internet device, but really lacked in the cell phone department. I'll be eyeballing one of the SK2's in the coming months.

Ballmer singled out XML and Web services as the "big breakthrough" of the next decade that will spur innovation.
Yeah, it will spur innovation as far as they let it.
Step 1: Announce the next "big breakthrough.
Step 2: Make a development platform to spur "innovation".
Step 3: Make it exclusive to Internet Explorer.
Step 4: Profit.

That would be awesome if they figured out a way to put the widescreen version on normal DVD's and the "Full Frame" verison on black DVD's.
