i give a rip because i had an ipod and it didn't work properly, so i returned and and decided to go for something else that was cheaper. As it turned out my iriver was cheaper, more useful and functioned more in the way i wanted. If i am annoyed when I see so many people with ipods it's because I don't think they are as good value as other mp3 players on the market, which seems to me a perfectly reasonable thing to base my comment on. As it happens my iriver can also transfer pictures across from cameras without a computer which was one of the reasons I got it, and it's also great for recording audio and watching videos. I got it for its functionality, not to be obscure or elitist. My complaint was purely that people are buying the ipod in such droves because they don't realise the choices they actually have, and if apple arn't marketing it as a fashion accessory then then i'll happily cut off my left leg.

I have an iriver h320 and I completely agree that it is much harder to use, however I would choose it any day over an iPod. While you may not treat your ipod as a fashion accessory I believe a lot of people do. It reminds me of yoyo's when I was little. The soft drinks companies brought out branded yoyo's and we all went insane for them, never did I think when I was getting them 'why don't I get a normal one' because it was about having the same as the next guy. I'm kind of sick seeing people with white earbuds in the street now, and it makes me glad I returned my first ipod and bought my iriver in it's place. It has the functionality I want and was much cheaper than an ipod. Also I would suggest checking out the iriver h10 http://www.iriver.com/html/product/prpa_product.as p?pidx=61 as an example of an incredibly stylish, functional and small mp3 player which is definately 1up from the clunky design of my h320.

Just a small aside from whether campbell crunches kernal code, if you have the chance you should watch the 2002 film Bubba Ho-Tep, with Bruce Campbell playing a retired Elvis in a Nursing home. In the film he and a very old JFK have to battle an egyptian mummy, as the tagline says "The King of Rock vs. The King of the Dead". I realise it's an relatively old film to be pimping but it well worth watching whether or not you are a Campbell fan or not as it's incredibly funny, with an extremely poignant ending. http://imdb.com/title/tt0281686/

I can hear the crow of a thousand 'grumpy old men' mumbling "In my day..." but I think that this 9year old and any other prodigious kids achievements are certainly worthy of some recognition.

It seems that the BBC is more and more in the press recently, pushing innovation in tech and approaches to broadcasting, I for one as a brit paying my bit for the bbc am very glad to see my money being used in a way that I would like to see it being put to use. Certainly the bbc are not the first to offer their shows over the web (i'm thinking in particular of Battlestar galactica in particular as an example of this new phenomenon) but it's excellent to see them embracing it. Also even more importantly The mighty boosh has to be one of the most humourous pieces of comedy I have seen in recent years, well worth tuning in. you mentioned it in the first place; farcry. I had the luck to be given an old copy by a friend who couldn't run it on his computer, I installed it on mine, which was a bit beefier and fired it up. From the moment I started playing I realised that Farcry was a very different beast from anything else I had ever played, and this is coming from someone who's been a quake fanboy since Quakeworld days. I've since then played D3 and HL2 through and they just truly cannot compare to what Farcry brought back to the genre for me, and that's FEAR. The last game to make me as tense, and as scared as that was thief, but with farcrys stunning outdoor jungles and heartstopping tenseness I was hooked in a way I havn't been to a game in a long time. I always know when I really like a game or not, based on whether I get so bored I bring down the console and /godmode it just to get to the end. With Farcry though its replay value was so great, I kept on coming back. I especially liked the bit near the beginning where you had to sneak through the jungle sneaking up on mercs cutting their throats. Hmmm I need to get that psychotic streak seen to, but it makes playing games sooo much more fun!

I mean really, there must be a reasonable way to check for dupe stories before publication, this shouldn't be an issue on an important geek news website, really it shouldn't.

The only reasonable alternative for someone like that is in my opinion mac os x, which out of the box "just works". However up until the mini-mac the price of mac hardware was prohibitive. The interesting time will be in 6-12 months time when we see if there has been a big take up of the mac mini. If it gets pimped enough then perhaps Apple will make real headway into decreasing redmonds user numbers.
