When I was younger, I was exposed to religion. Not just any religion. Southeastern U.S. Christianity. I found it terrifying that there was a god who would judge me to an eternity in hell because of something I did wrong, and did not repent my sins. That's what they told me would happen. Then it occurred to me, what if I worshiped the wrong god, and made the real god very angry by doing that? And what if I misunderstood what I was supposed to do, or got bad information, and got sent to hell anyway?
Then I realized these people didn't know any better than I did. I just never developed the faith. The idea of great ghost in the sky, who will punish me if I do wrong, just doesn't make sense to me.
I enjoy life. But if I learned that I am terminally ill, hell would not be my concern. And if I know I'm going to die very painfully and slowly, I see nothing wrong with suicide once my symptoms making being alive worse than being nothing.
So yes, in the right situation I would sign a DNR order, no ventilation order, power of attorney, and whatever else I thought was right. If I'm dying, there is no sense in adding unnecessary suffering.
Exactly. You want an OS to use all of your available memory to cache slow storage. Paging out data that hasn't been accessed in a long time and using that data for cache will generally result in a perfomance improvement.
If you go back to an application that you haven't used in 5 hours, yes it will take a while to get the working set paged in. But don't forget that the system has been in general running faster for those 5 hours, and some waiting in a case like that is generally a good trade.
I do wish this behavior was configurable on Windows even via a crude method like the linux VM "swappiness" parameter, but I think most users will assume that paging out is always bad and set it to whatever value disables paging out, or at least makes it very unlikely. Look at how many pages on the web recommend setting swappiness to low values. In some cases those users are shooting themselves in the foot. I guess that's why MS doesn't let you configure it.

I have enough experience that I can do most of these things intuitively. However if you cornered me I could describe the reasons behind my actions. There is a logical process involved, and more information is processed than most people realize.
Then of course there is the math of the game. Odds of drawing out, likelihood of having the best hand or a live draw to the best hand (which requires some ability to infer), pot odds, bet odds, etc.
Poker "tells" could also be recognized. These are unconscious gestures that reveal information about an opponent's hand. Tells are overvalued by some poker players, but being observant and trusting my instincts and knowledge of human nature HAS saved me from losing a lot of money to monster hands. Also I can sometimes pick off a bluff on nothing more than a strong suspicion.
I have no doubt that all of the above can be approximated by software. It would take a lot of research.
Managed code will do nothing to prevent a deadlock, and it will not deal with incomplete error handling.
I think the OP is on the right track. It is better to focus on recovery, rather than trying to write code that cannot fail. Even still, there are situations where recovery is not possible. E.g., your application requires a database, but the database does not respond. Plan for and test all the recovery scenarios that you want to be able to handle. Input that is known to cause a crash should be logged (and not reprocessed!) along with system state for quality improvement. Some input will cause a failure every time, while in other cases the system must be in a certain state before the failure will occur. The Command Pattern will be useful for this.
For an extra measure of system reliability, use/recommend fault tolerant hardware such as RAID 5 arrays, ECC memory, etc.
People ARE switching to better mileage and cleaner burning cars.

During the oil crisis of the 70's, people "switched" to more fuel efficient, smaller cars. The price of fuel has not spiked as much as it did then. The current love of hybrids and smaller cars will fade along with the high prices. We Americans haven't learned a thing.
