obviously you're not from illinois. he's a first-term governor. yes, this was a shit law that was obviously rushed through "for the children", but g-rod's not totally a bad guy. the asshat before him (ryan) was worse (though his snuffing the death penalty was a smooth move, imho).
correct me if i'm wrong, but doesn't the "net zero effect" only happen if you use bio-mass created ethanol in the mix? i've seen instructions for using methanol, which i'm pretty sure is a fossil fuel. so it's like net-almost-zero.
wow, for once there's a slashdot article i have insight on! (whether it's modded that way remains to be seen....;) )
i would actually be shocked if there weren't linux support. the ability to do what they want only need to be in the drivers. i've been doing a gpgpu feasability study as an internship and did an mpi video compressor (based on ffmpeg) in school. using a gpu for compression/transcoding is a project i was thinking of starting once i finally had some free time since it seems built for it. something like 24 instances running at once at a ridiculous amount of flops (puts a lot of cpus to shame, actually). if you have a simd project with 4D or under vectors, this is the way to go.
like i said, it really depends on the drivers. as long as they support some of the latest opengl extensions, you're good to go. languages like Cg and BrookGPU, as well as other shader languages, are cross-platform. they can also be used with directx, but fuck that. i prefer Cg, but ymmv. actually, the project might not be that hard, just needs enought people porting the algorithms to something like Cg.
that said, don't expect this to be great unless your video card is pci-express. the agp bus is heavily asymmetric towards data going out to the gpu. as more people start getting the fatter, more symmetric pipes of pci-e, look for more gpgpu projects to take off.
You smell that? Do you smell that?... Speculation, son. Nothing else in the world smells like that. I love the smell of speculation in the morning. You know, one time we had a random Google idea, rumor-blogged for 12 days. When it was over I walked up. We didn't find one of 'em, not one stinkin' rumored product. The smell, you know that speculation smell, the whole blog. Smelled like... victory.
i really hate it when people get high and mighty and give glib "it's so easy" responses to pandemics.
while the "1,2,3" reasoning may work in the States / West (and that's a *big* may), i encourage you to find the nearest fireman and borrow his 'jaws of life' so that your head may be removed from your own ass. take your little "changes to social norms", board an airplane, and tellittotherapedandabused the world over.
fucking prick. seriously, what mods posted this arrogant shit insightful?
because it's against the law, genius. scroll up, somebody already commented on this. unless you're from his district, he can't listen to praise nor flamebait. i'm from illinois, but not his district (btw, GO WHITE SOX!), so my opinion is off-limits as well. even when you call a sen/rep by phone, you're supposed to give info so that they can make sure you live in the area the sen/rep is supposed to give a rat's ass about.
Not sure if anybody picked up on this (it is Slashdot...), but as far as "The transition date was chosen to not interfere with college football bowl games or basketball playoffs", Dec 31st is probably the worst time to do this.
IMHO, the best times for not stepping on the most sports-related toes is February, late June, or November. It just depends on who you want to piss off. February is right after the Super Bowl, before March Madness, but during the NBA regular season and NCAA conference tournaments. Late June is after the NBA Finals, but during MLB's season. November is after the World Series, but during the NFL, NBA, and NCAA football regular seasons.
There are only two days in the US where there are no pro sports games being played. The days before and after the MLB All-Star game. So some large corporate entity is going to have to have a dip in coverage, so I guess NCAA Football, the NBA, and the NFL were chosen for this one.

4500 acres = ~7 sq. mi.
if the area is square, that's 3 mi. per side. the site is in california, which isn't hurting for spare, sunny land.
Yes, there was something wrong. As another poster pointed out, the 40GB model used 2 20GB platters, while the 30 is just one platter. Now the only "fat" iPod is the 60GB model.
I found myself asking this same question, too. So I put the question to the makers of the EyeTV 500. This is their response:
"EyeTV 500 does not support the broadcast flag. Units bought before July 2005 will never support the broadcast flag. We will not update EyeTV 500 units bought before then to support the flag.
Thus, your EyeTV 500 will never support the broadcast flag. It will ignore flags, and not use DRM for any content. That means you'll have the maximum freedom possible with its recordings."
It's a little pricey, but it does the compression on the box. I don't have digital cable yet, but I may buy this come May/June just for the fuck of it since pre-July box prices will probably go up dramatically come July 2 (on the black market, of course, since the law bans all inter-state trade of these devices).
My god man. Anytime your comment makes sweeping assumptions and generalizations about somebody because of their other artistic endeavors you are an ass. Will be seeing this one on opening night.
Rent The Italian Job by the way. And maybe actually listen to some Mos Def before you talk shit. Black on both sides, Black Star, and The New Danger (or any Soundbombing, for that matter) aren't your typical fare. Ass.
I asked him that same question in a class he taught at my school. The way THE is setup, instead of "everything is a file", it's "everything is one big file". So for searching text, he introduces the Canon Cat jump with does an incremental search (a la search in FF). Some of his ideas make sense, others do not. He gave us copies of THE to use. Worked just fine on modern hardware. Just wasn't my cup of tea. I think it's not going to take off in his lifetime given the fact that Joe Sixpack is used to the Win/Mac interface (which aren't too terribly different) and aren't going to go through the trouble of acclimating themselves (a process he talks about in his book) to this new one if they don't have to.
That said, I think THE is ok, but nothing to evangelize about. Jef is an asshole to deal with and trying to introduce an idea to him that differs from his own is akin to beating one's head against a brick wall.
rant {//karma be damned!
This is basically a middle-finger to the U.S. Same as with the oil deal with China, under-the-table deals with Cuba, etc.
As for the coup: Chavez is someone in power, and, like all men with power, wants to keep it. While a coup wasn't the "best" way to go about ousting him, the guy is making no other real choice available. The guy put Caracas police under military control (bypassing the mayor that dared to disagree with him), regularly supplies high-powered arms to the poor ("the red brigade" or something similar) and then poo-poo's it when said folks open fire on peaceful demonstrations. Before you start "suppose"-ing whether somebody's part of the "elite", why don't you take a look at Chavez. Ask him why he only chose to help the poor a week before the referendum. Why billions (with a b) in aid money from the '99 mudslides disappeared and towns are still covered in rubble from it. Why his country sits on the #4 oil reserve yet 2/3 of the nation lives in poverty. Why the Constitution had to be changed so many times once he took power (after trying to steal it) and all the changes he made all add up to him retaining and centralizing all control to him (if not outright, via cronies). He duped the poor, plain and simple. He ousted the aristocracy but moved to a dictatorship.
And no, I'm not part of the "minority elite". I'm not even Venezuelan. But dictators are like the USSC definition of porn: you know it when you see it.

(sigh)While it's nice to see FOSS being embraced by a government insititution, in this situation it's like being embraced by your creepy uncle. I suppose the decision was made so that Chavez could use the word "libre" a bunch. Oh well.
That's got to be useful for something, NOT.
it's still 1993? you know, i hear these "troll dolls" are supposed to be all the rage nowadays...

Apple says they'll deliver something by a particular date, and instead deliver it six months earlier.
must be new to Apple, eh? used to be the other way: announce, then deliver six months later. too lazy to google to find links....
Thankfully it hasn't been on Slashdot yet, I'd know as that usually tears my bandwidth a new one.
;)
Consider it torn...
Coolest project I've seen in ages.
I, for one, welcome our concern-addressing, no-binding-power-having overlords.

+5 Interesting? what? um, it was the cold war. get over it. i'm sure the kgb did equivalent counter-espionage. it was two nations in agreed conflict.
get off your high horse, here's a stepladder....
um, why are blogs paraded as news or at the least columns? and why is the summary a copy-and-paste job? i must be new here, right?
slashdot. blogs are news. ruminations that don't matter.

but how will all of the increased radio effect the wildlife?
do any animals (not joking) use frequencies in that range? will there be a significant increase in radiation, doing harm in a 'natural' setting?
Nope
it was flash *memory* for the ipod, genius....
