Some scientists say there may be no fish left in the oceans by 2050, and we all know that dolphins descend from a land species. We also know that dolphins are smart. I wouldn't be surprised if dolphins decided to come back on land to avoid an ocean without food (fish)!
This is the philosophy of Buffet, the second richest person in the world. It is correct if you are willing to wait. But those who want fast results have to accept higher risk, as usual.
The problem with nuclear energy is not the reactors, it is the sloppy engineers and managers who run them. I prefer nuclear to coal and petroleum, but only if the reactors are designed, built, and most importantly run by competent safety-oriented professionals (and this means they must be properly funded).
It may be that foresight can only be developed through culture. The biological ability exists, but it needs education, paideia, and nurturing from parents, teachers, and other humans in order to make a bunch of neurons in a newborn brain think wisely and with foresight. And currently our culture does little to pass wisdom and foresight across generations. And it's not easy to be pass it only trough a book, especially if the teachers themselves are unable to teach it properly, although it would help if we had such a book in schools. The best solution (albeit still patchy) would be to develop a political system where wise people with foresight could be identified and promoted to leadership. Er, Plato said that some thousand years ago and we still don't have such a system.
Earth without humans... yes, but could it run GNU/Linux?
er...
Sounds funny but some physicists really investigate the possibility of universe being a big computer (and we are the bits, right? and it looks like we are just a bunch of six billion noise bits, so I wouldn't be surprised if a noise filter wipes us out of existence)
Could this be a result of imminent or undergoing volcanism? Perhaps a volcano is about to form or explode in the near future in the Oregon-Washington region and unleashes poisonous gasses in the sea water before unleashing its lava.
I regularly work while standing, and I am the only person in my office which does that. Everyone looks at me trying to understand why I am typing on the keyboard while standing. It's funny, but I find using the mouse a bit difficult. Perhaps a trackball or touch screen would help.
Computer Science is a branch of Mathematics. You cannot be a Computer Scientist without being a Mathematician. You have to know Discrete Mathematics, Automata Theory, Complexity Theory, Algorithmics, Graph Theory and other mathematical stuff. It is not possible enjoying studying algorithms without enjoying mathematics at the same time. Perhaps you should question yourself why you dislike Mathematics, and what do you think Mathematics is? I bet you had a bad maths teacher in school, or you do not really know what maths is.
The professor banned laptops from the class because she believes that note-taking on a computer distracts the students and interferes with eye contact. My opinion is that it is the professor's responsibility to supply the students with detailed notes. If the professor expects the studentry to take notes, then she should not interfere with the way this is done: One student may prefer the pen, while another may find more comfortable to work on a laptop (I would just use my PDA). In my view, if the students feel the need to take notes, the professor has failed to provide them with adequate written material. I still remember a seminar where the professor supplied us with a written version of his lecture, and I still remember word-by-word everything he said, after 7 years, because I did not have to take notes. Professors who just talk and never sit down to write what they say during the lecture are lazy and should be fired. They pass to the studentry a job that they should have had done before a lecture begins.
Personally when I apply for a job I want to know whether my CV was received (this can be done with automatic email confirmation), and how many days I will have to wait until I have an answer. Then, after this period has elapsed, I want to know whether my application was accepted or rejected, and, if possible, the reason. For example: "Your application was accepted because you meet all requirements and you know good XML, please come for an interview and get ready to answer some programming questions about PHP and XML" or "your application was rejected because you do not have the necessary prior experience at another company" or even "your application was rejected because your CV was too long" (so, in that case, I can send a shorter CV). Before I apply I also want to know the exact geographical location where I will work and, if possible, the salary. Additionally, I want to know the privacy policy of the company and how long my CV will be archived, as well as whether and how I can update my CV in the company's database (if it has one). I believe that the best way to recruit talented people is not to ask for specific degrees or professional experience, but to put a programming problem of medium difficulty on the vacancy ad and request all CVs to include a solution to the problem. Remember: The best way to keep people happy is to treat them as human beings, not like machines. By the way, here is my professional webpage.
you don't use a hammer for inserting and removing screws, right? You should also not use VisualBasic for developing an operating system, and you should not use Assembly for rapid application development. Languages are like tools, so you use the right tool for the right job. I would also go even further to suggest that we should use multiple languages per software project, when possible. Obviously I am against language standardisation.
First advice: Use modularisation at its extreme. Second advice: After finishing your UML model, create a mathematical model too using automata such as finite state machines and formal methods or other software engineering techniques. If the model works well mathematically, there is good chance that the software conforming to the model will work ok too... in theory. In practice, I advise you to hire a good lawyer to write you a thorough disclaimer.
I can design websites (see my professional webpage), but I cannot understand this obsession with ajax... ajax here, ajax there...! I am fed up with Ajax and Javascript, and I believe they are bad for usability and compatibility. can you give me ONE good reason why one should use ajax instead of web standards and (if web interactivity is really needed) java?
It is worth noting that only one of the three cellular network operators in Greece was providing services to the people whose phones were tapped, and that a day before the company notified the prime minister, one of the managers of that company was found burned in his house (reported as a suicide). The press also says that the company completely destroyed the surveillance software detected in its systems.
I am surprised that this story made headlines. In the age of electronic and wireless communications one should assume that all conservations are monitored, without exception (the only limiting factor being the cost, which is not that high nowadays). Just read some books of former spies and you can quickly understand that no small country is safe from spying. Today, saying that a politician's phone was tapped is like saying that Windoze is full of bugs. Expected news is no real news, and I cannot believe all the hype appearing on Greek media. It seems to me like Greeks are not accustomed with modern surveillance.
if your project does not infringe any copyrights and patents, then I can let you host it on my VPS (where I run Wikinerds.org) for a while, until you find a suitable full hosting account. Send me email if I can help you with this.
Although I primary use and love Konqueror, I wish to congratulate the SeaMonkey developers for continuing the suite project. I actually hate Firefox, although I have it installed (together with Epiphany, Mozilla, Opera and other browsers).
We do not need energy drinks. The best energy drink is knowledge. You first have to cease consuming chips (French fries), coffeine, soft drinks, et cetera. Then you must scientifically design your diet. I base my diet decisions on science, id est, I study how the brain works and what it needs, and then I take care to keep it happy by feeding it well. In this site you can learn some basics. Personally, I take a lot of antioxidants, for example by consuming foods rich in vitamin C. I also try to walk a little every day or so. A tip: If you are a vegetarian nerd, like me, you must study your diet and ensure you take enough DHA omega3 fatty acid. If not, then you can try consuming sea vegetables or take vegan DHA supplements. Disclaimer: There is no health advice in my message, I am just a compsci grad, not a dietician!
I do not listen to any music, but even if I did, I would prefer to donate some money directly to the creator of the music, instead of making record labels owners rich. Gift economy could work, as long as the participants honestly agree to sharing.
Is an uninformed vote better than no vote? Just think that Hitler came to power with uninformed votes. You got your answer now, didn't you?

I use GnuCash and I like it, it is really a great tool. Kudos to developers for 1.9.0!

just have a look on the list of names of the persons that were spied upon, it is publicly available on the mainstream media.
I think PC-BSD is hosted on sf.net, so why they wouldn't let a GNU/Linux distro in?
