It truly is sad that people focus on the graphics of games these days, rather than the content. Graphics are simply a way to convey the content.
That said, your point on the mods was correct. I personally think the Xbox version of Morrowind was much better than the PC version (I have both), but the one thing that frustrated me was that you couldn't add mods to it. Also the fact that Bethsoft didn't feel like adding their own mods to the GotY edition, but that's another matter.
I plan on buying the Xbox 360 edition for a reason I'm sure a lot others have: It's cost-effective. If I had to buy the PC edition, I'd need to get a faster processor (I don't think 700 mhz will cut it), more RAM, a larger hard drive (Current one is 20 gigs), and a graphics card that will be able to run it. Oh, and the game.
For the Xbox 360 one, all I need is the Xbox 360 and the game.
Some will say that in the long-run, upgrading the PC would be better. I'd much rather have a system that will run games made for it 5 years after its release (assuming it survives that long), than have to upgrade my video card every two years to play the newest PC games.
Maybe it's simply apathy for the news?
I'm constantly amazed at how clueless people are towards the current events of the day. If the internet is to blame, surely SOME people would know of events going on?
After a short while, you have memorized all the characters and what they mean. That purple L coming for you...better hope you have Magic Resistance somehow. That gray q? Better get your arrows out.
But as you said, a great bonus of it is the ability to play it on someone elses computer. I know of many free telnet services that just let you play nethack. Hop on #nethack at FreeNode for more info on one of these and the bonuses it has:)
Are you aware of all the crap 'normal' people will put up with just to get that cool new Buddy Icon? All that adware and spyware just to get that new theme?
People don't *care* about how their computer is doing, as long as they have cool stuff. This will most certaintly NOT make people switch computers.
On the other hand...if someone makes a virus that wipes Windows clean and does a netinstall of Debian that passes through AIM, that might make people switch OSes. For a few minutes atleast before they get their copy of Windows out.
But it's much to complicated for most students. I believe the main cause for this is just how realistic it is. Age of Empires is just a straight forward conquering game. Don't have to worry about revolts and corruption, just build units to counteract your enemy.
Sure, Civ is fairly easy once you learn how to play it, but AoE has a much gentler learning curve, so it wouldn't take as long to learn it.
Those devs can be working on other 'mainstream' distros. Sure it's a small number, but it really adds up once you look at all the smaller distros.
One small crack in a windshield isn't too much of a problem, but once you have thousands of cracks in that windshield...
"Free as in beer is cool and all that, but if one excuse for dumping GPL is that they aren't getting any benefits in the way of free code, I guess they weren't really drinking the Kool-aid in the first place, eh?"
Or maybe they simply took the advice of Slashdot, the advice that is often said whenver a company sees no use in releasing their software under the GPL or a similiar license, that if you release it, people will help add to it. It being open source doesn't mean people will help update it.
Obviously, this was not the case with this company, and if their competiters were just taking the code and using that, they would be losing far more than they were gaining by releasing the source code as well.
'Tis a dangerous thing to engage the authority of scripture in disputes about the natural world, in opposition to reason; lest time, which brings all things to light, should discover that to be evidently false which we had made scripture assert.
At this point in time, RTS doesn't stand for "Real Time Strategy" games.
It stands for "strategy games." People are familiar with "RTS"; they associate it with an overhead view of a map where you control units.
Besides, "RTS" is easier to type in than "strategy."

Don't you think that method is a tad extreme way to end global warming?

"I've always wanted to start my own city....."
I'd say you need to train some settlers.
With the state of modern military intelligence, I'm sure they would never find it.
Is that kinda like the Oregon Trail?
I call dibs on hunting!
What about us people who don't know what commands do what? Man pages are fairly useless if you don't know which command to ask for.
You must remember, everything from Japan is different from the United States.
You know, one of the circles of Hell (Part of Circle 8 IIRC), is frozen solid.
The guys who made Quake 4 also made a Star Trek game.

I remember hearing something about MS releasing Halo ON the Gizmondo. Might be faulty memory, but still...
I can't help but wonder why this post got modded Off Topic...
Well...I'll go out on a limb here and say that it matters becuase it's a kernel that is used extensively.
Hell, if linking to goatse isn't terrorism, I don't know what is!

Probably for the same reasons someone would write a virus for Windows?

Do you honestly think that Microsoft cares what Slashdot says?
