  1. Re:"Very few things surprise me about videogames" on Plotting the Revolution's Arc · · Score: 1

I was at a conference type thing for high school aged kids. At it, we chose one seminar we wanted to see. I chose the one where one of the developers of Spore were talking to. The main idea of the seminar was to explore the way that Spore will deliver skins to the various creatures you can be. While that was amazing, what the crowd loved was seeing the developer PLAY the game.

It was very cool watching her (the developer) control the organism. The way you can add legs and arms to your organism, add more eyes...EVERYTHING is customisable. Eventually, you become 'civilized', that means you can actually control the evolution of your village.

She showed us some scenes of a small village full of primitive organisms. Think of cave men and you have a close idea of what it was like.

Then, she showed us a small section of a 'modern' city, complete with a wall and turrets. You can make the citizens dance, pray, fetch food, etc. You can even make your own vehicles to attack various other civilizations. She had built a few low-tech vehicles and then sent them to attack an enemy civilization. Wrong move. The enemy had air units and layed waste to her small army, and proceeded to attack her village. Needless to say, she lost, with her buildings crumbling in an incredible way.

After that demonstration, she showed us the Galaxy. Spore will allow you to colonize other planets in your Galaxy (and other's too!). She sent a single space shuttle, outfitted with a terraforming weapon. She even picked up a villager on her way to the new planet. She first showed us that you can drop any unit you pick up (Poor villager! He was splattered all across the land after this!) and then showed us the terraforming feature. In real time. She vapped the ground, and made a crater. She zapped somewhere else and made a mountain.

It is a truly amazing game and I for one can not wait to buy it.

I've always planned on buying the Xbox 360, not for the specs or things like that, it seems as of right now that the PS3 has beaten the Xbox 360 in that regard, but rather for the games.

I know that my computer would NOT be able to play some of the games that are (supposedly) coming out for the Xbox 360. Half-Life 2 and The Elder Scrolls 4 come to mind. My computer is one of those 20 gig, 697 MHz, GeForce 440 MX computers that can't run anything. It obviously won't be running any next-generation games any time soon.

The fact that I know someone who works at Microsoft so I can get games for about $10 US may also be a factor in my decision...

Yes, people "should" be running it, since it's been out for only a year.

However...that's not always the case. I repair computers as a side job, and you'd be amazed at all the SP1 Windows machines there are out there. In my past 10 computer jobs, maybe one or two of them actually had SP2 installed. Now, I'm not saying my experiences are the same as everyone else...but my guess is that it would be the same.

To those who don't secure their computers, me and countless other geeks who make money off repairing computers salute you!

    It's extermely good.

Only bad part is...the supplies. Or rather the lack there-of.

As the poster below me said, I too had to quit becuase of no ammo. I was stuck in a warehouse area of the ship with no Psi left (Think magic...just not so easily replenishable.) and painfully few bullets left. And the melee weapon just didn't cut it.

It was at the point where it was more effective to wait 15 minutes for an enemy to stroll past an exploding barrel (heh) and shoot the barrel to kill him.

Besides this, I HIGHLY recommend it.

On a side note, I remember reading a Wired article where the 'casual gamer' (people who play games and have a life) think that $10 is a good price for old arcade games.
