    or, that dude needed to pay rent and buy food. at the time, perhaps taking stocks as payment and risk not being able to pay the bills wasn't an option. the lesson is that sometimes, fortuna favors the bold, but, you still gotta' eat... so you do what you have to do.

    I was thinking in terms of a notebook. Just like everything else CPUs should not be judged on just one features. Think of cars. Do you always buy the fastest car? What about gas mileage, handling, breaking, or room?

    while this is a common analogy that people use... for the life of me, could someone explain why people spell "breaking" the way they do? is that a deliberate reference to something breaking down, or is it in reference to "braking"? this is not the first time i've seen this. any insight into this would be greatly appreciated... i know this is totally off topic but inquiring minds want to know!

    believe it or not, in korea (where else), this is still a reality. in fact, a news program in the vein of 'dateline' in korea locked some people into a condo with absolutely no furnishings, no food, no water but did give them a computer, broadband internet connection, and a credit card number. amazingly, within one hour, most of the people were able to order groceries, pizza, beds, couches, toiletries, and other household items and had them delivered to the "condo"... i kid you not.

    we're living in a more and more morally ambiguous society. children are committing "adult" crimes and are getting away with it because they are "minors". i don't agree with you. if there is willful intent, forethought, and cognizance, they should be punished just the same as adults. such criminal behavior is not to be confused with kiddie-mischief. certainly, crimes like rape, murder/manslaughter, theft (of all kinds), assault and the like should be treated the same whether the perpetrator is a child or an adult.

    I'm curious, how often does it crash, what is the network load you guys have, and what spec hardware are you using? is it the 'server' that's crashing or the VoIP hardware that's crashing?

    its a given that hardware uptime is a major issue with VoIP, but at the same time, good planning and good design (read: redundancy) as well as investing in decent hardware should somewhat limit the amount of crashes you have... but of course, that's in a perfect world scenario.

    i'm curious as to whether or not Google will continue to employ the current business model. what with their enterprise level search appliances, google desktop, and stategic partnerships, i wouldn't be too surprised if they actually spun off another divion of google and have that company NOT rely on advertising. certainly, they're building up capital for *something*, be it browser, OS, or whatever. methinks its a fine example of a dot.com idea that adapts to market conditions and actually delivers products and services, not just hording venture capital and delivering absolutely nothing.

    well, the problem is that so many functions of the car are SO tied to the chip that well, it CAN'T work like a car without it. What with the upscale cars having variable cylinders active depending on driving conditions, car "figuring" out who's driving and adjusting itself to the driver, skid control, traction control, manumatic transmission, heck, even the ubiquitous ABS, most cars today can't function without a nice little chip and little OS to run the damn thing. witness my old suzuki sidekick. when the chip died, it cost me $3,000US - which was more than what the kelly blue book said the mini-suv was worth!

    while i'm ranting, even diagnotistics are all done via "computer". the good ole' days of mechanics knowing what's wrong just by the sound of the engine are long gone. if the diagnostic computer doesn't tell the mechanic what's wrong with the car (spewing out it's event log basically), well, they don't know what to do.

    while i can see that you want to make regular interpersonal contact with people, saying that the demand for fancy electronic devices can be lowered in some states merely by changing the law is about as moronic a statement as a statement can get. the telephone was invented for a reason, and the cell phone took that concept to another level. traveling 75mph for 100 miles to see someone all the time is simply not practical.

    the american lifestyle is so different from asia and europe, and naturally, the products people use are designed and marketed for the region. my uncle and his wife were visiting from korea and the cell phones they have is insane. the plans and coverage they have is even more insane. if you are as mobile as korean people are and use public transportation en masse as they do, do you REALLY want to be carrying around a separate cell phone, pager, mp3 player, digital camera, pda, etc., etc., etc.? for their needs, a super-wiz-bang cell phone with all those functionalities is exactly what they are looking for.

    while i can certainly understand that some people may simply want a product to do one thing and do it well, something can be said about a product that can do most things decently well enough to satisfy the needs of the target market. in terms of call plans, my uncle's plan has an ala carte system which allows for INTERNATIONAL roaming for a nominal fee. he was making and receiving calls from korea here stateside as if he was in korea. the u.s. market has a looooong way to go, but, i suspect that unless american culture changes, the phones might be overkill here.

    i guess i should've been more clear.

    that would've been my recommendation as well. using something like squirrelmail as a frontend or something to empower the users. but of course, PHB doesn't see it that way. they went out and bought software that cost 5G's, with NO customizable options and the settings were global, even across virtual domains! needless to say, i didn't stick around very long to find out how the company did. last i hear they sold the isp part of the business and were headed down a slipper hill...

    i suppose making clusters and such would be a fun experiment, especially if the benchmark figures show that its competitive with other cluster farm arrangements relative to cost of ownership and operation and other financial figures. but it seems as tho apple's target market for the mac-mini IS NOT the server market. i think that much is clear. the hardware is nowhere near server grade. apple isn't THAT stupid. why would they try to cannibalize their x-serve or even the G5 market? that is not to say, the mac-mini isn't useful. if you had to recommend something to your parents something that was non-MS reliant (less work for you what with the maintenance and all), the OS is stable (BSD woo hoo!), and it looks darn cool so your parents are the envy of all their friends, AND it comes in that "cheap" (hidden costs notwithstanding)... the mac-mini is for you. tho, if wal-mart or costco started carrying the mac-minis, then you know fo' sho' Jobs lost his marbles.

    when i used to work for an ISP way back, initially, it was SysAdmin's inablity to admin the box - our email SERVER was open relay fer' crying out loud... which led to our domain be blacklisted. that wasn't fun trying to clean up. a couple of years later, we implemented spam filters and such but the USERS wanted it off. we'd have MRTG action going to monitor traffic and look for anomalies and such... but when it comes to joe blow user who doesn't want his email filtered... what's a small ISP to do? then, as many have said already, there's always the false-positives to deal with, and entire domains being blocked... its a tuff call. current email system wasn't designed to deal with spam so is building a system from the ground up a solution? or is user education more effective? AOL is huge because your grandma' just wants to see cute pictures of you. and sign up for her free ipod. no harm done right? i think its a multi-tiered, multi-solution effort with multiple parties involved...

    yes. but i ask you - would it be more fun if you drove around as 'johnny farter' in a 'wheelsRus' or as 'michael schumacher' battling 'jenson button' at imola for the championship with the drivers and constructor's championship in the balance? to the uninitiated, racing sims can seem just as obvious and pointless... well, the same can be said for sports fans. especially when you take control of your favorite team with your favorite players leading the team on to victory. the intangible joy that anyone gains isn't so obvious.

    erm, i think its the context that matters. more often than not, the rightful owners of the names are the players themselves. much like how 'madden' is owned by john madden himself but EA uses the name and his 'likeness' to sell their games and john madden gets paid for said usage of his name and likeness.

    as for your criminal wanton behavior, i do believe since joe montana hasn't played football in ages, the statute of limitations has passed, and brett farve is spelt with two T's, not one, so you're not really infringing on the name ;)

    and ain't that the problem? a computer is NOT as simple as a tv set, but the marketing departments of various computer makers would have you believe otherwise.

    ain't it a shame? when consumers don't put the effort to learn how to use a product, and it causes problems or as a result breaks, who's to blame? even regarding education, there aren't too many people who want to spend money to learn how to use something as 'simple' as a computer. at least that means job security for help desk employees. ;)

    crying shame people think of the computer as such a simple device. perhaps people like that would be actually better off without computers. they should go back to those old school word processors with those dinky monochome monitors.

    don't give hollywood too much credit. from the studio's point of view, its all about the benjamins. and the best way to do that is to cater to a wider, more mainstream audience. the thing i hate the most is the fact that hollywood oftentimes mess up the 'origin stories', thereby completely changing the mythos of the characters or the series. spiderman, x-men, hulk, heck, even smallville all mess up the characters so they attract broader audiences. as ardent fans, i think we do need to understand that part of the business...

    i suspect the gyroscopic nature of motorcycle wheels/tires would present its own unique challenges. motorcycle tires going 'pop' have more to do with heat and proper air pressure than anything else. admittedly, it would be a rather interesting application of the technology. i for one, welcome our new airless rubbered overlords.

    we're so behind in our infrastructure build-outs as compared to say, south korea, this would be a cost effective and perhaps efficient way to either retrofit buildings to be 'smart buildings' or to build new offices and buildings with such infrastructure. now, if they can only get PoE to my IP-based coffee maker and toaster, i'm all set.
