Yes on Christians, Jews, and Muslims, they are historically linked after all.
Buddhism has nothing to do with the god of Abraham. (Indeed, the actual teachings of the Buddha have nothing to do with gods, they crept in later.) Nor do Hinduism, Shinto, Taoism, Confuscianism, Zoroastrianiam, or most other religions have jack to do with Abraham's hallucination.
Yes, but the best reason to attain enlightenment is to better help your fellow sentient beings. After all, once you're omniscient you know exactly which religion is proper for whomever you're trying to help. It doesn't matter what path you take, they're all headed to the same destination.
No, it was pandering to the brick and mortar casinos. It was helped along by the religious factor, and the nanny state supporters.
This sounds like the most plausible explanation to me. What I want to know is: who the hell are these nanny-state supporters we keep hearing about?! The Liberals blame the Conservatives, and vice versa. I know I don't support those assholes, and I tell my representatives in congress all the time.
I personally think they are a straw-man created by people like Richard Nixon and Wm Randolph Hearst who have ulterior motives (re-election and profit respectively). Unfortunately, once the straw man makes it into law it's nearly impossible to fix the damage via politcal means- everybody knows it's political suicide in the US to call for an end to Cannabis Prohibition, after all. Good luck getting rid of this POS law, regardless of how bad the "unintended consequences" get.
Doesn't "furry fish" imply that he knows they're mammals? After all, mammals are distinguished by their body hair (among other things). Never seen a fish with peach fuzz.
She represents San Fransisco fer chrissakes! How much more liberal can you get?!
Which is why I might consider putting down my bong and not voting Green if she ran for pres.. This year I'm voting for an incumbent Dem in my house district and Aaron Dixon of the Green Party for senator.. Fuck Maria Cantwell, I'm sick of Republican-Lite. I don't regret voting for her in 2000, cause Slade Gorton is the devil- but had I known that she'd vote to give GWB a blank check for war I might have voted (gasp!) Libertarian.
Reading this post you might get the idea that I'm an independant... But trust me, if I could vote for Green Party candidates every time I would. I sure as hell regret voting for Kerry in '04.
Just because its from the FCC doesnt mean its bad automatically.
Acutally, yes - if it had come from the Federal Communications Commission that would have automatically made it evil. But it came from the Federal Trade Commission, so I guess that's neutral.
Yeah, trying to teach people to act in opposition to a biological imperative is totally insane. It's like telling them that they should stop breathing in order to avoid catching tuberculosis..
Back on topic: I wonder if they might consider doing the same kind of thing for my parents' generation to help them spot phishing attacks and deal with pop-ups.
Weird./. seems to have edited my post, it's plain old text from now on, dammit.. That what I get for skipping preview I guess. Here's what I meant to say:
I know what you mean, and IMO many times sensory limitations are generalized to the entire population while extraordinary indviduals who spend time training their senses will be able to exceed them. I had the benefit of learning from professionals in audio production in a collegiate setting. The ~30ms rule was one I heard from many of my instructors and verified for myself a number of times (on analog and digital gear in state of the industry studios). Since I graduated 9 years ago I have been actively training my ears, I have also been a multi-instrumentalist for nearly twenty years. So take from that what you will.
I bet most people can't hear the difference between DVD quality and CD quality, and most of the consumer gear doesn't help there... I guess it's splitting hairs, but audio professionals who truly respect their craft will always strive to present the musicians' intent in the most transparent manner possible. I've always thought that breaking rules didn't mean much until I knew what they were.

Music is a weird thing.. a couple of milliseconds difference is enough to change the perception of a note.
Actually, the human ear is capable of detecting two discrete notes if they are separated by at least 30 milliseconds. If you set your digital delay to anything shorter than that, it won't sound like an echo - it will sound like the delayed signal is part of the original signal. Your example of a synth producing a note half a second after you hit a key is spot-on though, you'll notice that and be pretty annoyed if you're trying to do an overdub.
http://ccrma.stanford.edu/planetccrma/software/ has offered a real-time kernel for as long as the project has been around, for the above reasons - and if you're trying to record 8 tracks of audio at 24b/96kHz you'll quickly realize that the kernel has to be able to handle all of that data precisely, or your drum kit recording is going to sound awful.
Heck, this case has changed it's innards so often, I've had to change its host name TWICE (just for kicks, really... but I realized, twice, that the insides had been completely reworked, and it warranted a name change).
I've wondered about this myself, since I've run into the same situation on a few occasions.. I realized that what's important is not what hardware is being used, but what the primary purpose of the box will be. This became easier once I decided on a theme for my hostnames. My audio recording box is a black shuttle sn95g3 named "blackbox". This is the third iteration of blackbox, having started with a spraypainted k6III five years ago - all of them have lived in black cases with their primary purpose being audio recording.
I'm hoping to be able to move my recording rig away from Microsoft, but my linux skills seem to be insufficiently advanced to get my Firepod to talk to Jackd. Vista just doesn't sound like it's going to be an improvement over XP, and these license restrictions really rub me the wrong way. Hopefully my new copy of XP x64 will hold up to Sonar for a few years.
I'm glad to see someone else liked the Fallout games.. I even enjoyed playing single-player Fallout Tactics (Brotherhood of Steel); if they had spent another couple of months killing bugs before they released it it would have been my all-time favorite LAN party game. I found a web page where somebody had gone through all the 1p maps and fixed the most heinous bugs so it's not so painful to play.
I'm curious how you hypnotized them. I remember designing brain wave graphs with cooledit 95 and some pink noise - phase shifting would syncronize the brain, there was a howto in the help files. Also had a friend who had this device with a noise generator and a pair of sunglasses with 8 red LEDs which blinked according to some programs in ROM.. Totally interesting 15-30min trips, though... Always went back to the delta waves.
NYPD Blue started it, and IMO did it well- it's all about subtlety. People take it too far, though- it has no place (like jump-cuts) in documentaries... Not that I'm calling BSG a documentary, but I have changed channels because some asshat at the History channel decided to do a doc on Grand Central Station and cut the fucking thing like a music video. Made me physically ill.
Because it is FUNNY when they catch a politician contradicting him/herself.
Yeah, I laugh for a second when they do this. And then I get profoundly depressed that the so-called "news" has NEVER done such a simple thing with such a startling effect.
I felt a strange sort of pride when, in the second semester of tenth grade geometry, I got 10% of the possible homework points and still earned a "C". Looking back at it now, if I had done my homework instead of practicing guitar I'd be a much different person than I am.
Also, homework unfairly discriminates against students who choose not to do it...
Yeah, tell me about it.. It didn't take me long to figure out that I could blow off 75% of the homework and still learn enough to ace the tests. Made me wonder about those people who did all of the work and still did crapfully at exam time.
I have a laptop of this vintage with the same problem, only it doesn't have an onboard ethernet. The reason I don't use it anymore is that the pcmcia slot only does 16-bit... Good luck finding a pc card that does *anything* and is 16-bit!!
Personally, I like to use the cursor keys... I don't have any terminals which don't have them, and the recent versions of vim recognize them just fine... Of course, I'm not a coder - so the quarter-second it takes to move my hand over doesn't actually add up to much. Also pgdn/pgup and home/end are very handy (pardon the pun).
My theory is that Prohibition is the cause of the appallingly high murder rate in the US. http://www.reason.com/rb/rb012903.shtml shows the murder rate doubling during eras of prohibition.
When you have a black market with something like a %2000 markup with no police protection, of course you will take protection into your own hands. It's no wonder that para-military groups have control of the Columbian drug trade with a basically unlimited budget and no governmental control...
It's disgusting that one of Dick Nixon's political ploys won him reelection yet caused the deaths of hundreds of thousands of people - and yet no one calls it what it is: morally wrong.
Returning to the topic: if they tried this in the US it wouldn't take long for us to have our own FARC.
Damn! 32kB certainly isn't enough RAM... and no hdd... Though I guess I could hook up a cassette recorder to it for backup...
Memories... I actually learned to spell "print" so I could make my TI 99/4A print my name on the screen.. If only I had restrained my 5 year-old self from spitting upon my little brother, then our babysitter wouldn't have had a reason to yank the cartridge out with the power on... I'm still somewhat bitter about that.
Funnily enough, one of the changes I noticed in my brother after he came back from the US Army Infantry bootcamp was that he had started thinking of distances in meters. I also use meters to estimate distances on foot, though I wasn't indoctrinated by the military - I just like to be weird, and since yards are so close to meters it makes me feel like that season of high school football wasn't a total waste.
Oh, and if I'm not mistaken - wasn't the "standard" system developed in Europe? I'm really not sure what you're trying to say here. It seems like you're trying to be sarcastic with that second paragraph, but isn't it all true (except of course for the use of metric)? You must be one of those conservative simpletons who thinks that any criticism of the US makes one a traitor. The US was a great place when it was a Republic, and I believe it can be great again when it shakes itself loose from the corporate facism of which it is currently enamored. Of couse, people will have to stop voting like the media wants them to for this to happen.
Back on topic, I would tend to agree that it's a little silly to get all worked up over a scientific definition.[sarcasm] But you have to realize that everybody in the US was taught by rote memorization so critical thinking is not our strong suit...[/sarcasm] Oh well.
I have a $25 d-link 10/100 switch I bought 3 years ago which auto-senses whether it has a straight-through or crossover cable connected to it... Seems likely that more expensive gear would do it too...
