Windows is easier because it is the market leader and almost every bit of hardware or commercial software that you find is designed for it. Chances are that you also "grew up" using it and the knowledge that you gained was bit by bit and mostly painless. The windows environment comparable to the American system of weights and measures -- everyone (in the US) uses it, everyone has some knowledge about it, and everything is designed for it. I know by looking at a bolt if it is 5/16 of an inch, if you asked me how many milimeters, I'd have to think. Even if metric "makes more sense" it won't "just work" for me unless I retrain myself. Linux has made things easier and with some of the Live CDs things mostly just work, but there is usually some retraining and tinkering for me at least.
Consumer glow sticks are just glowing and sticky when you crack them open, never burned me. I was a boy scout when cylume light sticks started getting popular and we used to crack them open and paint our hands with them at summer camp. Less skin irritation than sun burns and bug repellent.
I may be out on a limb here, but the post in question sure sounded tongue in cheek. Especially since it is almost impossible to cut yourself with the plastic from consumer type glow sticks. The post to me sounded like a parody, like "It's all fun until someone loses an eye", or "Remember only you can prevent forest fires... herpes... insert any other calamity here."
One of teh biggest reasons is that these large national banks have become large national banks by buying up the smaller ones. An account that I opened about 20 years ago, has gone through 4 banks. I have never had to change account numbers or anything and I think many people just don't liek change, so they stick with what they have.
What is scary is that your threshold for getting a charge reversed on your credit card is very low, and you probably could get the charge reversed. I work for a gasoline distributor and almost daily we have someone who denies a charge used at the gas pumps with their credit card. Even if we supply video of the customer, without a valid signature, the charge gets reversed. If you want to make enough of a stink, anything that doesn't have a valid signature someplace can usually get reversed.
What about "e^n arke o'logos" which is usually translated as "In the beginning was the Word." I would think that THIS would have been the original first post
Archimedes DID invent weapons of mass distruction, or at least as massive as you could get with then current technology. But I don't think he would have given a flying trireme about whether someone thought he spoke Latin or Greek.
The hard drive died on my Dell laptop, replaced the drive with a new one, downloaded a MEPIS cd and installed from there. the most painless installation I have ever seen. Wireless card is buggy, but I just picked up a pcmcia wireless card that is working perfectly. The mini pci card is only supported with ndis wrapper. That sucks because you can't play with Kismet. But just order a new mini pci wireless card that is supported if you don't want the card sticking out. It isn't the OS that is wrong, but the hardware.
I agree that greed is a part of human nature, and what allowed us to hoard resources whne times were lean in th every early stages of man. Communism is indeed a utopian solution, as well. But what do you think motivates altruistic actions. For example there is absolutely no good reason for me to give money to my college's alumni fund every year, but I feel like I "should". What about gifts to charitable organizations? Now, some people are "charitable" just to get their name out and to appear "better" than everyone. But what about the anonymous donor, they are acting out of the spirit that would allow utopia. If we understood that impluse, we could create systmes that function better.
Yes high wages are respent, but the more money "spent" well that leads to inflation. Inflation lowers the spending power of those "high" wages and you are left with less real money. Regarding unions, in the United States trade unions are no less evil than the corporations they are fighting. Each faction is out for their own short term benefit, corporations exist solely to make money for shareholders and decision makers, while unions exist solely to make money for union leadership and then union members. This is because of a basoc human drive - greed. What reform can correct that?
This must be Slashdot - someone who reads the article and responds to a post with information from the article is modded less than the parent poster who just made stuff up
Nowhere does the grandparent say that he should personally exploit the stupid people of the world, he is just exasperated that they persist in blaming the "world" for their stupidity. I can totally share that exasperation. At work there is a phone card machine, in large letters right above the bill acceptor, in both Spanish and English "This machine cannot dispense change - EXACT CHANGE ONLY". (Not knowing Spanish I am just assuming that it is correctly translated) Weekly someone says that they "got screwwed" by the machine because they only wanted a $5 card and the machine took the rest of their money. We open the machine up and get them their "change".One guy even did this twice.
On some contracts, when the sales drone is begging for the sale, I have just crossed out the offending fine print and initialed the emmendation. This has actually worked twice in my favor, where the company tried to enforce their usual terms and I pull out my copy and ask them to prove that I signed something else.
Is it just me or does anyone else find it interesting that the fellow who bought the spamvertised product was named "Dick"
The clueless purchasers compared spavertising to mail order catalogs, and I do hear that somehwat frequently, but a more accurate comparison is the products advertised in the classified sections of Cosmopolitan or Penthouse.
So what's their contact information, as I imagine that they are selling their pornography, pills, and pirated software quite cheaply as their website is shutdown
As already mentioned the important part of the quote discusses malware that "gets onto computers without the users' knowledge" Already for almost all of the malware spyware crap the user HAS to do something to install it. Unless Longhorn will only let the user install "Microsoft Certified" software, then the user will still click on any link to install a dancing frog screen saver, bonzi buddy shopping help, etc. So this quote is truly chilling, in that Gates could be saying that the user will no longer control their operating system, or Gates is just totally blowing hot air
I live in a town in Massachusetts with a municipal cable and electric company. There is no competition for cable or electric services. They also supply internet access. Personally I prefer to have my dollars staying in town, and actually lowering what I would have to pay with my taxes. I pay $27.55 for expanded basic cable and $39.95 for broadband. It seems like a good value. Also, customer support for billing questions and the like is very easy, you talk to a live person from the start of the call. Tech support sucks, but that is probably standard. If the gov't realy wanted to snoop they could do it already, besides especially if the traffic is wireless you shouldn't be doing anything that you don't want broadcast anyways.
Like many people on Slashdot, I am the "computer guy" at work. I came to this position by default, but the real reason is the way in which I learn and approach computer problems. The vast majority of computer users, just know set functions and treat using a computer like assembly line work, i.e. "Press 7, then press 3, hit enter twice, and look at the result." These people can be quite quick and get a lot accomplished, but they don't have a clue as to what they are doing.
This gets tricky when you have to support them, because if anything unexpected happens they are totally lost and can't tell you what went wrong, because they honestly don't know. All they know is that what they usually do, didn't work. Most of the time all I have to do is walk with them very slowly through what they did and the answer is pretty apparent.
Most users just need to open their eyes and THINK about what they are doing rather than doing it by rote.
I agree with the sentiment, but car seat instructions are a poor choice of examples. Car seats are fairly difficult to install correctly and they are an important life saving feature. Even with simple instructions, a large percentage of car seats that are checked by police departments during safety screenings are incorrectly installed. The instructions SHOULD be as simple as possible.
I hate to say it, but even with a signed credit card receipt the business is s.o.l. if the customer says that it is NOT their signature. Just try this at your local gas station. Even if the signature matches your signature, if you deny the transaction, you don't pay and the merchant gets no money. Doesn't even matter if they have you on video signing the slip, because the credit card companies will NOT accept video evidence. Of course if the merchant decides to take you to court you will lose, but for $20.00 court is not worth it.
Vendors already are TOTALLY responsible for fraud. But the kicker is that even if the signature does match - there is no gaurantee of payment to the merchant. The customer has only to say that the signature isn't theirs and they don't pay, the credit card company doesn't care, they made money off the transaction from the merchant, then they also take the full purchase price back from the merchant.
According to the MSDS for cyalume lightsticks http://www.sarcamp.com/cyalume_msds.pdf no significant skin irritation was observed in animal testing.

Wishing I had mod points, because your reply was far more insightful than the parent post.
Wasn't that exact same dialoque in an episode of the BOFH?
