Eh? Attempting to burn down one house is slightly less of a danger to the population in general than wackos flying jets into occupied buildings, or firing hundreds of rockets into a neighboring country.
PETA-type morons could be fended off with a handgun, or a ball bat with a spike in the end.
I was just making the comment that the problem probably isn't Windows, as it runs well on the Athlon64 platform.
While the board I have right now is based on the nForce4 chipset, I'm not happy with the way nVidia does their drivers, or the amount of crap that is bundled on the board (got the board and the proc as a package deal). My next board (AM2 based) will NOT be based on an nVidia chipset.
I had a Socket 939 system running an X2 3800+, and had no problems with Windows XP Pro and gaming or multimedia. Sounds like you may have a bad hardware combination and/or bad driver mojo working against you.
I'm currently running Ubuntu on the same machine, and it's a beautiful thing.
Mac's aren't "BUILT" any better than your standard PCs. I've got a couple G3 Blue and White towers at work, and they're junk. Cases are cracked, dirty, nasty. Fans going out left and right (to be expected, they're old desktop machines, not servers). Drives sound like a table saw with bad bearings.
STFU, and go back to hugging your Mac, you hippie.
They do all sorts of stuff, mainly dealing with atmospheric research. There's a lot of different people doing different things.
Again, it's a group of scientists who banded together to share infrastructure and knowledge. They used to do intern positions while I was there, might be worth giving them a call with your plans to see if they can place you somewhere.
I moved from the Boulder, CO area to work in the suburbs of Chicago.
I fucking miss living in rural Indiana. Cities and the morons who like to pack in like sardines, deal with all this smog and pollution, and pay the insane housing and living costs associated with "city" life can all go to hell.
Give me cell based internet, a porch swing, and a laptop out in the middle of no where, and I'd be happy as could be.
I would gladly take a pay cut to go back to work in a rural setting.
I said export to "GIMP or whatever" could read the files. Inkscape is supposed to be a vector based image editing platform for Linux. There ARE pieces of software out there that can do vector graphics under Linux. Maybe do a search next time before posting?
I don't have to "live with it", you arrogant prick. I run Linux.
Can't say that being poor in the US is all that bad. I was very much below poverty level for a couple years in the midwest (four figure annual income and totally independant in every way, ugh), and I still managed to work my way out of that situation. I don't know how often the people in India get the chance that I had to better my situation.
I don't know if these guys are industrial enough for you, but check out http://www.nwra.com/ for more information about NWRA. They do a lot of different things, get government and private grants, and are privately owned (by the employees).
I used to work for them in their Boulder, CO office. Great group of people.
The top 25% of the population of India ranks just above the lowest 30% here in the USA?... Wow, so the cream of the crop ranks slightly above people with cars on blocks in their front yard in the US?
What about the other 75% who can't afford cars, or even the blocks?
The pinnacle of civilization, I tell you. Go India.

I don't know how many times this has been said, or how you could have possibily missed it, but Plan 9 from Bell Labs is EXPERIMENTAL! It's not mainstream, people don't actively port all the thousands of bits of software that make up a typical Linux distribution.
The first time I used Plan 9 from Bell Labs I did a lot of reading, and ended up with everything working after a couple hours. I think the lack of "wizards" and crap like that made it easier to really appreciate what was going on in this operating system, and it definately forces you to read and grasp some of the concepts that will be foreign to a typical *nix user.

Hey, thanks for the crappy article at OSNews. I've stopped going over there for anything relevant to computers, and wish I hadn't seen this Slashdot submission.
Same here... I'm disappointed with the crappy drivers for my nForce4 motherboard, and have been planning on giving an ATI solution a shot later this year.
I fail to see what that phone can do that I cannot do with just about any EVDO enabled phone/PDA in the US. Different specs on stuff like camera resolution and whatnot, sure, but all the functionality is there and adequate.
I guess I'm just spoiled with my Verizon EVDO PC card and laptop.

Shouldn't that be pr(;)n?
At least there's one person around here who has a clue as to what's going on with these new Google apps.

They weren't abused, they were used just like the rest of the PCs we have in the office.
We purchased these systems for work, not to be looked at and admired.
And you are correct, the fans and drives are the same as everyone else... Nothing special about them, just like the rest of the computer.
So, maybe we just slashdotted the FBI's data collection system?
KEEP CLICKING! Whee!!!

Go ahead and complain, but you'll get more accomplished if you try to do something positive and create change.
More like less than 0.01% of the PC gamer market.

Only if your total power consumption was in the milliwatts. 48VDC, sure, but there's next to nothing for the current (amps).

I did exactly that about eight years ago, and bought a Panasonic television instead of the Sony.
Sony ain't all that, except for the very top end. Same goes for Apple.
Export the Corel files to something GIMP or whatever can read. Pretty simple solution, if that's all that's holding you back from dumping Corel.
Don't know how you could have made that mistake, since I gave both the abbreviation and the actual name of the company in the same line.
Oh, well. That's Slashdot for you.
