The really sad part is that it is mostly the PHP developers that hold on to this belief that MySQL is something other than a flying piece of crap that utterly disregards data integrity. It is no wonder that the developer of a piece of shit like PHP would think that an equally stinking pile like MySQL is superior.

Just because YOU made eye contact, does not mean the other driver/rider has made eye contact. They may be looking beyond/through you rather than AT you. I used to think that eye contact meant they were looking at me, but on a couple of occasions I have had drivers "make eye contact" and then start to turn out in front of my motorcycle. A quick blare of the horn and a swerve around the partially pulled out, but panickly stopped car has saved me from a near collision. The MSF (motorcycle safety foundation) classes repeat this over and over, eye contact does not mean the other driver sees you!

I don't think the point is that Digital Recorders in general would no longer be used, just TiVo specifically. There are DIY Digital Recorders available like MythTV. As these other solutions mature they will eventually replace TiVo in the mainstream if TiVo continues to introduce recording limitations.

This is not news. The least of these people's concerns is whether or not they can use something other than IE to make thier claims with. I thought this site was "stuff that matters"? The first time Katrina is even mentioned on the site is for this garbage? While you are complaining about FEMA's site not working with alternative browsers I will be out there helping repair local housing for survivors that are being relocated next week. Get a clue.

Give it a rest already. We can't stop coding for IE since it has 97%+ market penetration. Geeks like us are the only ones using good browsers like Firefox. We can't force this change on the average masses, and we can't afford to have our sites only support the 3% of fellow geeks using standards compliant browsers. The best we can do is design our sites to work with IE and other browsers as well (which we all should be doing anyway). Hopefully as time goes on the sheep will come to our side, then we can make the switch.

The acceptance of limited oppressions is the gateway to complete oppression. This is like saying that one caged bird should not complain because it's owners allow it out of the cage on some days, while the other is always kept in the cage. Sure China's government is more oppressive than ours, but that doesn't negate the fact that the US government becomes more oppressive by the year.

  18. Re:Self-replication from abundant components on Self-Replicating Robots · · Score: 0

Steve, By your explanation then humans are only self-replicating in certain contexts as well. For example, if a couple is married and one or the other is sterile, and both are fundamentally bound to monogamy then they are not self-replicating, by your logic. If a doctor is introduced into the picture to artificially insemanate the woman, that would not be self replication. If a man or woman is stranded alone on an island etc...then that person would not be self-replicating. If a person is homo sexual, that person would not be self-replicating. If a person lives in an area where there is too little food and that person is too mal-nourished to carry a child to term, that person would not be self-replicating. I'm pretty sure that the common consensus is that homo-sapiens are self-replicating. The innate ability to replicate, and being given the correct circumstances and exercising the ability to replicate do not nullify that the ability to self-replicate does in fact exist. I believe that these robots' abilities for self-replication are extremely limited. That does not mean that the ability can be denied on a basis of the very limited circumstances where it can occur.

When this gets old he will probably just revisit Alvin Maker and the Crystal City.
