    agree but statisticians have not solved the kind of problems data scientists work on these days. neural networks did not come from statisticians or example. data science involves /some/ statistics and /some/ computer science and that scientific mindset.

    - support for israel at the expense of palestenians
    - support for dictators of the middle east
    - US military outposts scattered over the middle east
    - popularity of western culture in the middle east
    - not too long ago the whole middle east was colonized!
    these are just the major points

    my point is the projection of influence and power is basically one way from the West (US) -> middle east. the suggestion that muslims are the ones changing the West is ludicrous compared to this.

    you missed the point. you can adjust your application window to any aspect ratio and size. i'm just saying that a big 4k monitor gives you more choice in that adjustment. it's like putting a 16:10 picture on a wall. do you care about the aspect ration of the wall?

    with 4k monitors you're going to have alot of vertical pixels. so you could just buy a big 4k monitor and just have a tall window for your text-heavy applications. one big 4k monitor is going to have functionality similar to having multiple "HD" (1920x1080) monitors.

    but 4k monitors aren't ready yet..may take a year or two. in the mean time I have an asus PA248 which gives a bit more veritical space (1920x1200). i can flip it but it becomes too tall (physically) for normal desktop use. i also have a flipped "HD" monitor and alot of times it's not wide enough for some websites.

    respect for C++ but, for me, the middle ground is Python for the high-level stuff, plus calling C from Python for low-level stuff. I'm in "analytics" so this is perfection to me. We don't need all that C++ stuff.

    got skills? advanced stem degrees from the US? indentured servitude visa for you...maybe! green card is a dream. you must be employed in this specific thing or else! YOU MUST COMPLY! YOU ARE A FOREIGNER! YOU WILL BE A FOREIGNER FOR A DECADE! GET USED TO IT OR GO BACK HOME!

    if you are lucky enough to get the capped h1b visas, once you get it you can get another employer to petition for another h1b while you are in the country so in that sense it is "transferable". however, the tie is established if the employee wants to get a green card. they have to do it through A (1) employer...which can take years. a decade is not unheard of. if the employees goes to another employer, he/she has to start over.

    acid isn't so important when the unit is a patient's records. there is also no need for a rigid data model.

    they got involved instead of a statistician in the first place: because the bottleneck was the size of the dataset, not the analysis scenario.

    it's not just the data size, it's also b/c the data is unstructured and of various kinds..nothing nice and tabular. also this data is being generated by complex processes...where a fresh algorithmic and/or domain expertise can help.

    this doesn't mean that stats aren't needed.

    Nothing. I'm sure other languages can do everything R can do.

    Does it just have statistical functions built in and ready to go?

    It does have that, along with an active community and growing popularity in scientific circles, so there is lots cutting edge interesting work being done with R -- and a lot of its free and open source. Plus it has multi-core support in several libraries places, and even gpu support in some.

    since it has cutting-edge stat functions that's plenty of functionality that R has that other languages DON'T have.

    there is (practically) NO "normal" channel! you literally have to be lucky to get a green card. got skills? let's see you go through a gauntlet of legal procedures that are complex, illlogical, and inconsistent.
