It seems funny I was reading the Sept. 2006 edition of Reader's Digest this morning, and was drawn to an column "Turning Point" featuring Bob Newhart this month and he had something along those lines to say also.
The article is titled "Finding My Funny Bone", by Bob Newhart.

He was talking about two of his recordings : "The Button-Down Mind of Bob Newhart", and it's sequel, "The Button-Down Mid Strikes Back". The first went to #1 on the Billboard charts, and got between the two recordings, got him three Grammy's that year. He goes on to say that he just recently started getting royalties on the recordings (they came out in 1960), and:
"Lately I have begun to receive royalties on the albums on a quarterly basis. Even as a trained accountant, I'm no exactly sure how they calculate these royalties without all of the financial records and contracts that burned up in The Great Warner's Office Fire of '73. But they apparently have a formula. Just last week, I received a check for $1.18."

I watched that happen on one of my boxes at home- unplugged the cat5, and the install claimed it couldnt finish without internet connection. And that's after you go through the validation process just so you can download IE7 from MS.

Be warned- if you don't want WGA, be careful trying to install IE7.

    Hear! Hear!
You said it. Having a decent view of a live rocket ( of any size, but especially the shuttle) is an awesome experience! You can see it well, you can hear it really well, and what you CANNOT get from the TV is: you can FEEL it launch. Your best home media solution with massive subwoofers can't even com close to the rumble you can feel from the soles of your feet thru the top of your hair!
You can't fully appreciate the power these things unleash in controlled fury until you've actuall went and seen one.

To the parent LWATCDR replied to above: do all that is in your means/power to get your kid to see the launch.
Plan on spending a few days, the launch could get delayed 12-24 hours, if it goes on schedule, then there is a lot of NASA related stuff to do and see around the area- if your kid enjoys that type of thing, then it's a fairly fool-proof way to get "way cool Dad" and "hero" points from the kid, in return you get to give him/her an experience they will never forget!

My Dad worked for NASA both at Wallops Island,Va., and also at Goddard Space Flight Center, Greenbelt, Md. when I was groing up.
At Wallops Island it seemed there was a launch a week (I was in kindergarden and First grade there so I doubt it was even close to one a week! LOL! )But I probably saw over a hundred launches before I was in 5th grade- never got tired of them- all were exciting!
So, Pop....get on the stick get that kid out there for the launch- you may be influencing the next Veil Armstrong, or W. Braum!

After using Windows only since 3.1 days, last month I had to reinstall XP due to HDD failure.
No problem, I have been good about back-ups, etc., so would just be an afternoon's task, right?
Uhmm...I fell victim to that WGA crap this time around-kept telling me I had pirated software.
My copies of XP Pro (all three of them) are legit retail versions- still have the sales slips.

I have fought with MS many times in the past- I'm a gamer, and frequently format and reinstall the OS (on average about twice a year)to keep the PC running smooth - I've spent a lot of time learning how to set up a secure, but speedy XP setup so I can get good performance from my games.

To make this short, I have had it with MS's draconian activation/verification schemes lately, and WGA was the last straw...went to the store, got a copy of "Linux For Dummies" with Fedora Core 5 (and other distros) on DVD, and installed FC5. (yes y'all can laough at me all you want, but it WORKED!)

So now I have a tri-boot PC : Win 98se for my games and PlayStation emulator that won't run on XP, XP for my more modern games, and for when I'm not actively gaming, FC5.

It did take a little more work to get full multimedia going on FC5, but by no means involved arcane/messy hacks (Google for "installing Linux on a dead badger"! LOL!), but now I can watch all of my DVD's, listen to my cd's and mp3's in 5.1 surround...all is good.

My point is (agreeing with you) that I, a complete n00b had no trouble, even with multimedia setup in *nix. The only fly in the ointment is learning how to set/change permissions so I can mount all of my storage drives in FC5- they're all ntfs, and when I try to mount get "you don't have permission to do that" message, but I found the documentation to take care of that, so....

I have found that Linux is a little different trying to do some things, but most are so similar that it's easy to figure out, actually easier to find out what is going in Linux than it is to find out what is going on in Windows!
