Not all of the opposition to GM crops stems from "...asshole science-fearing luddites."
How about all of the farmers getting sued for infringement by Monsanto because Monsanto's GM crops contaminated the farmer's own crops?

    Start here:
    (http://www.google.com/search?client=firefox-a&rls =org.mozilla%3Aen-US%3Aofficial_s&hl=en&q=GM+crops +%2B+infringement+lawsuits&btnG=Google+Search)

    or here's this:
" The real possibility of interbreeding is dramatized by the defense of farmers against lawsuits filed by Monsanto, the agribusiness company most involved in research and development of genetically modified crops. The company has filed patent infringement lawsuits against some farmers. Monsanto claims that the farmers obtained Monsanto-licensed genetically modified seeds from an unknown source and did not pay royalties to Monsanto. The farmers claim that their unmodified crops were cross-pollinated from someone else's genetically modified crops planted a field or two away.

Percy Schmeiser has been farming in Saskatchewan, Canada, for 53 years. He has served in the Canadian Parliament and been a mayor. Instead of retiring, he has spent the last several years fighting Monsanto after having been sued for patent infringement. Schmeiser grew canola plants on his farm, over the years developing his own seed that was resistant to diseases common in western Canada.

    Property rights

In 1998, he was sued by Monsanto, charging that Schmeiser had infringed on their patent by growing genetically altered canola--Monsanto's Roundup Ready--without paying their technology fee. Schmeiser claimed he had never purchased seed from Monsanto. The suit went to trial in June 2000 in the Federal Court of Canada. The judge ruled that it didn't matter how Monsanto's genetically altered canola got onto Schmeiser's land, that any conventional plant that cross-pollinates with the genetically modified plants becomes Monsanto's property, that patent infringement had taken place and that Schmeiser must pay his 1998 profits from his canola crop to Monsanto." This is from here: (http://www.findarticles.com/p/articles/mi_m1141/i s_30_38/ai_87353922)

What an interesting concept. This may or may not go against mine, but I find it highly worthy of further thought. Thanks!

I always figured the concept of soul was formulated in our arrogance to further seperate us from the "animal world". I've seen too many references that either blatantly seperate humans from animals, or many more that imply the seperation. I don't subscribe to the seperation myself, as we are mammals, thus part of the animal world.

When I may express this in conversation, I usually get some response along the lines of "they (animals) don't have souls, but humans do." How do they know this- is the concept of soul really valid, or just made up to enable us to "rise above the dumb animal" mentality?

I mostly blame religion for this attempted discrimination, as I don't see any way in the near future to actually refute the hypothesis that "dumb animals" have no soul, or the means to prove that humans DO have a soul- to me, it's all conjecture, speculation, and FUD.

The importance of having a soul or not seems to tie into religion too much for me to even worry about it, maybe I will find out for sure when I die, maybe not- not wanting to cross that bridge just yet.

I agree with you, but let's take it a little farther back.

Imagine you are living in the 1700's or the 1800's and computers and "digital" media is not even thought of yet, but these same type of patent and copyright laws that we have today (in the USA) are present back then.

Would the future people of the world (our present day) be aware of Mozart, Chopin, Beethoven, Shakespere, etc.? Maybe, maybe not. Copyright law and Patents were in place then, but for a very limited time. They (patents and copyrights) were deliberately set up to protect the inventor/creator for a short time- enough to get a few years monopoly on income, but not long enough to stifle innovation or improvement on the original works.

This worked out in the public's favor by allowing branching off/ improvement markets, but at the same time allowed the creator/inventor to profit for several years from it. The setup kind of forced the inventors/creators to keep at it- they could not afford to rest on their past works, as the public could get in on the act after a reasonable time- basically encouraging further progress.

Society as a whole could benefit from this arrangement- better our world and our place in the world, not like it used to be in the past (think "dark" or middle ages when the priests and/or King/gov't. had all of the knowledge/arts--sound familiar yet?)

IP is a counterproductive concept to all except copyright/patent holders. This would not be an issue if not for the drastic changes in patent life and copyright life as it is now, and even worse if the corp.'s have their way.

We are repeating history here folks, welcome to the dark ages again! We may not work our way out of it in our lifetime without catastrophic actions/measures. We either have to start turning things around now (to do this semi-peacefully), give up on it and accept it, or forcefully bring about reforms.

Don't kid yourselves, none of the options will be easy or painless. It's hard to "fight the beast" when your looking to keep a roof over your head and food on the table, but make no mistake- what we do or do not do will have an impact on how it "all turns out".

No easy answers, just some scary-assed problems to deal with ,or ignore and let the kids deal with it...after all they be young and full of energy! (just kidding)

I keep thinking of one of the things my instructors used to keep trying to pound through our heads: the biggest strength the human race has is it's adaptibility- observe, adapt, overcome!
The biggest weakness of the human race is it's adaptability- it's truly disgusting and amazing what we can adapt to and accept!
