[citation needed] Not that I doubt it, but uh -- just how "greatly" would the money and resources outweigh the energy savings (and the original purpose of storing energy, since the savings for the train was supposed to be a secondary bonus)

  3. This makes FP? on The Open Source Business? · · Score: 1

Open source philosophy made some good software. Therefore it's probably the best way to do everything, even if there's really no way to apply the metaphor (open source books makes sense, so probably we should have open source cars, too, why not?) Coops, businesses that encourage the voice of people farther down the line, these are all viable and good ideas. No matter how hard you try, though, if you're starting with the square peg of open source, rather than starting with a business, you aren't going to make it through the round hole of business. I'm glad I switched to Digg, where someone posing a question with an ex-buzzword in it doesn't make FP.

i had one usb keyboard/mouse set not too long ago... i cant recommend on how typing thumbless would be, but since it's only a problem in the thumb... the mouse was usb, but it was wireless. it could be used on a desktop like a normal ball-less mouse, but it had a button on the bottom that put you into a gyro mode where you could point. might work?

  5. More /. patent-hyping on Nintendo Patents Insanity · · Score: 1

I mean _really_. What do you guys do, just browse patents all day and think, "hmm, which of these could get a really lurid headline that would grab a reader's interest for ten seconds until he/she reads on and sees the vast differences between what we claim is being patented and what is actually being patented"?

Seriously, though, as an example of how unlike this you can be and still work the same general effect - FWIW, I've seen plenty of games that distort your vision and make things very strange after, say, a few beers...

  6. In my experience... on Cell Phone Service as High Speed Internet Link? · · Score: 1

Just two cents from my own experience, I lived on a sailboat for much of last year. Have a Sprint PCS phone with "FutureDial SnapDialer" (I think, or the other way around), third party software that uses the phone as a modem. A mile or so out on the ocean (not too far) cell service is alright, and the data does in fact hit ~broadband speed. Of course, this is entirely contingent on whether or not you can get service. Giant downloads (Jehtro Tull - Thick as a Brick) still took time measurable in days to download, as service would pop in and out.

Damn, I wish I had smart people like you in my math class. I made this argument on the first test of the year and got docked 8 points because my math teacher saw 2x as being 200% more. 8 points. Agh, it still pisses me off...

Oh... I think I might have taken it the wrong way. I was thinking by "preferred" state it didn't mean the state that the observer preferred, but rather the state that the system preferred - which is why the observers would all see it the same.

you're telling me that physical systems stabilize? Think about Hopfield nets where you can start with different inputs and it'll always come to the same stable state. Am I supposed to be surprised to find that slight changes several orders of magnitude smaller than anything I can perceive approach insignificance as a result of _everything_ else continuing as it normally would? Seems like common sense..

  10. Re:Capsella and more on Classic Toys For Christmas? · · Score: 2, Informative

Wow, Capsella. First of all, it's still on the market, even though I haven't owned any in years. It's the most amazing toy I ever had, loved the thing and definitely is better than Lego, Erector, etc. at making an engineer out of someone - what I wouldn't give to have one right now, because I'd still love it - and I never really did like Erector.

As for a chess set, I've been without one for a while, and just got one for my 17th birthday. My brothers and I have been playing several games a day for the past... 9 days. Still fun.
