I have also noted that mail in rebates frequently require you to send in the original UPC from the box to qualify for the rebate. Also a good scam, because if you ever need to send the item back for RMA, they wont honor it because you don't have an unaltered box with the original UPC.
Once upon a time, I lived with a few friend. 3 men, 2 women. Since the men outnumbered, we came up with a rule that the toilet seat had to be left in its natural UP position. Failure to do so resulted in us taking the toilet seat off for 1 week. Needless to say, they only left the seat down a couple of times.
As many have already pointed out, you car more that likely DOES have an embedded OS (unless of course it is pre mid 80's). Unlike a OS like windows/linux, the ones in vehicles have failsafes built in incase of failure. All the systems are programmed with a default setting, if a system fails, it reverts to default. My Acura Legend had a problem with the ABS. One of the sensors failed, so of course, ABS failed as well. Good news, it reverted to default programming (no ABS). Same with the fuel managment, traction control, braking, etc. All the systems still have a failsafe, and generally it involves a mechanical alternative. Abs fails, no ABS. Traction control fails, no traction control. Drive by wire accel failes, no accel. Entire system fails? Your car stalls, you throw it into neutral, and coast to the side of the road (PS, you breaks will still work, just have to push harder)
You actually think that if the US invaded Canada, that we would put up a concerted military effort to stop them? Give everyone a gun and tell them to evacuate the major cities. Hide in the trees and go guerilla on their ass. With the size of Canada, and the small population, I think the US would give up because they could never find us.
I bow to you, not only were you able to summarize the entire first page in one simple post (thus saving us from having to read all the drivel), but you were able to sum up the/. community in one word... Morons.

Do you honestly believe, that because you are an American, you and your country has the right to police the rest of the world?
No country, no matter what has happened, deserves to be "leveled". Maybe Saddam was playing games. Maybe their were no WMD's. We will probably never know the entire truth, but regardless, that does not justify what the American government/military is doing to the people of Iraq. Their "beef" was with Saddam... He's dead, no more issue. Get the fuck out of there and let the Iraqi people decide what is best for their country, not some bible thumping moron from the south and his group of trained monkeys.
I know that this does not apply to all of the threads in here, but I need to get something out.
Is there anything that any hardware or software vendor can do that will make the/. community happy? This isn't meant as flamebait or a troll, it is a genuine questions. Dell is taking a step in the right direction by offering Linux on select systems, and some of you seem to be taking this as a personal afront because Dell doesn't cater to all of your whims. This is the start of them offering Linux publically on their systems. It will take some time for Dell to get everything worked out. Please, if you want Dell to continue to offer Linux on their systems, don't criticize them for the initial offering, support them. Go onto the Direct2Dell site and let them know what you would like in future releases. Contribute to the process, don't complain when something that you never asked for isn't included.
Noone gets it right the first time, and if they did, we would still be using the alpha of Ubuntu.
I hate to be the one to burst everyones bubble here, but Windows Vista is NOT Microsofts flagship OS. Vista introduces alot of new items into their OS line that need to be addressed by software and hardware development teams. Windows ME introduced driver signing to the MSOS world, and people hated it and wished they had never upgraded to ME. Well, then Microsofts flagship desktop OS came out (XP) with all of the same feature sets as ME, but with not nearly the headache. The world fell in love with XP and it became the 'standard' OS. Now Microsoft releases Vista, and again, this is just a stepping stone to the next flagship. Microsoft has added features such as reduced backwards compatability, and the quasi requirement for signed drivers and programs. It has been said that the next OS will not be at all backwards compatable, and will only allow signed drivers to be installed. Why you ask? Because Microsoft has been getting alot of flak from the industry and its users about security and compatability issues. Contrary to what anyone may think, Windows XP was a very stable OS from day one, it was only when you started adding drivers and software that issues began to appear. Now is that really Microsofts fault, or the fault of the developers for being lazy and not taking the time to code their software and drivers to the specifications that Microsoft put forward? To help answer that question, lets look at Junctions in Vista. Microsoft had to include these because some programmers had the tendancy to hard code c:\documents and settings\%username% instead of programming %userdir%. Again, is this really Microsofts fault. How about the compatability issues in Windows Vista? Well again, developers that wrote programs that require administrative access to install/run properly. In Vista, even as an administrative account, you are not truly an administrator, you are just not asked to provide credentials to run things as an administrator. Yes this is long winded, and yes I spelled things wrong. But I also want people to understand that Vista is the stepping stone for the OS that you have all been crying for since Windows XP was found lacking in both the security and functionality that you were looking for.
I don't know about the laws in your area, but where I live, if you are ticketed by red light cameras or photo radar, the ticket is not against you, it is against the vehicle. There are no demerits, just a fine, because there is no proof as to who was driving the vehicle.
Many individuals feel the need to express their dislike of traffic cameras and photo/laser radar, as one can see from reading the responses to this article. But I have to ask the question, and I ask this as simply as I can.
If you are not running red light or speeding, then you wont be getting tickets, so why does it matter if the cameras are put in locations that generate the most revenue? Or the police setting up in areas that you wont notice them until you 'get flashed'?
The only reason to complain about the above items is if you are getting caught. And if you are getting caught, then you are breaking the law, and deserve the tickets you received.
And maybe you shouldn't hide behind a blanket af anonymity... And perhaps some articles/proofs to back up your statement?
I will admit, I was misinformed about the Shaw/Rogers connection. (My God, I am admitting I was wrong, and on/. no less)
Shaw digital phone may be based off of VoIP technology, but as described in their own technology background sheets http://www.shaw.ca/NR/rdonlyres/05BA28F2-725D-468F -AD59-5D72E4DA2747/0/DPTechBackgrounder.pdf, the digital phone goes directly from their network to the public telephone system, bypassing the internet completely. According to this http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Voip, VoIP requires as active internet connection, which is untrue of the Shaw service.
Which means, that although Shaw digital phone is based off of VoIP technology, by defenition, it is not a VoIP phone.
The digital phone offered by Shaw is not VoIP, it is a digital phone signal sent over their existing cable infrastructure, instead of using the Telus telco service at an ungodly price. And because Shaw is part of the Rogers network, and Rogers has their own telco service, Shaw can offer digital phone service at a much reduced rate.
Dont believe me that Shaw isn't VoIP... The next time your Shaw internet stops working, try using your Shaw digital phone... IT STILL WORKS.
It's not that I don't see the merits of digitizing for preservation. My issue is with the belief that digitization is the only answer to preservation. I rue the day that we no longer work at preserving our original pieces just because they are stored 'perfectly' in a digital format.
Formats will change, but paper will always be paper. Marble will always be marble. And art (in all its forms) will always be art.
Very true. And I dont dispute the merits of digital.
However.... There are plety of cultural pieces that have survived in harsh environements, wars, etc. and are still in relatively good condition. Put a cd outside for 1 year and its fubar. Thats the point I was trying to bring across.
We may be able to make perfect copies indefinetly, but at some point in the future, someone, somewhere, will have the great idea of digitizing art, and destroying the original, then leave the only copy of Mona Lisa out on their desk in the sunlight, and it will be lost forever.
Now I may be totally off on this, seeing as how I am not a physicist (and probably cant spell it either), but by him testing this theory, isn't he in a way proving and disproving it?
I thought that the laws of quantum physics/mechanics stated that just bt observing, one changes the outcome, so by him running these experiments, he is neither proving or disproving his theory, he is just seeing the results of his interaction with the particle?
Although I agree that both DRM and levies applied to recordable media were a bad choice to begin with, I also don't think there is a strategy yet that properly addresses the issues of digital rights. Replacing the levy on recordable media with levies on the networks supplying the media is a bad idea. Currently, in Canada, we only pay a levy on specific media, and if we are not going to make duplicates of copyrighted material, we can buy cheaper media, and bypass the levy (or just ignore the 'levy heavy' media all together). If the levy is then put onto the internet or networks, we will be forced into paying, even if we never planned on downloading copyrighted work.
It's not that IBM wasn't consistant, because if that was the case, this guy would have been transfered to another department (perhaps without internet access), rather than been given a warning. The incident about co-workers having sex at work does not apply to this case because rather than just being warned about having sex at work, they were also transfered. And I would venture a guess that if they had sex at work again, they too would have been canned.
Before the Linux community goes 'up in arms' about the wording of this article, perhaps one should look at the 'flip side'.
If it was the Linux community that had pledged $750mil, and the article asked if Billy G was going to be able to match the donation, this thread would be filled with praise for the penguin.
Perhaps the wording of the article was meant to instill anger among the Linux community. Perhaps the individual who wrote the article is a Microsoft supporter and is tired of the way that Microsoft is constantly bashed on these forums. I myself am a Microsoft supporter (here comes some more negative karma). Why do I support Microsoft? Because that is how I make my money. How much of the/. crowd would be out of work if Microsoft went out of business? How much of the/. crowd use Microsoft product everyday?
Am I anti-Linux? No. Do I support what the/. Linux community has to say about Microsoft? Also a No. How many people on Slashdot claim to be 100% Linux? I dont have an exact figure, but I would venture a guess that it is above 90% of the posters. Which makes me ask another question, if 90% of the/. community uses Linux at home, Linux at work, and when helping family/friends recommends Linux and supports it for them, why is the Linux market share so low?
My suggestion to the posters on/. is to quit whining about Microsoft business practices. Instead, if you are unhappy with the cost, functionality, or just want to use Linux because it's 'cool', then stop supporting Microsoft by not using their product.
Here are some suggestions:
OS - Some flavor of Linux instead of Windows
Office Suite - OpenOffice
Web Browser - Netscape, Firefox, or some other Mozilla browser.
Web Server - Apache
FTP - BSDftpd, or ProFTPd, or whatever other Linux FTP you like.
Of course, these are only suggestions. You could go on flailing your arms about speaking the evils of Microsoft, but until you stop supporting Microsoft in action as well in words, the 'boys in cornflower blue' will continue to ignore you.

There, thats offtopic.
One only need look at Diablo 2 to know why they don't want a mini economy in the game. In D2, SOJs (Stone of Jordan, ring) became the in game currency. One can go online and purchase them for about $1 a pop. SOJs were and still are a fairly high level accessory, and once players started trading them, individuals started duplicating them, making a rare, high level item into an easily attainable high level item. After a few years of inflation, Blizzard finally decided to step in and allowed you to give up your SOJs, and by doing so, could trigger a world event (Uber Diablo, that when killed, drops and extremely rare and valuable jewel).

The majority of the/. community either uses Linux (doubtful), or pretends to because it not 'cool' to be a Microsoft user. Because of this, any (god forbid) anti-Linux post gets modded as a Troll or Flamebait.
