Because it's just in the last 200 years that we have made it possible to reproduce books/art etc and ship those to all over the world.
So before when we did not have any copyright stuff the worst that would happen is that someone would make a personal copy of it.

Today we have quite a bit different way of looking at this since we can make a copy of a movie or book very fast, and if they really would want to they could open a factory to mass produce more copies.

But i do agree that we need a reform of the copyright as they are today, and i think the best way would be to really reduce the copyright limitations. One way could be to limit copyrights to maybe 8-10 years and also make it legal to make non-profit copies.

Well, downside for us or the propagation of the species?

If you live longer you have a bigger chance of getting cancer or some illness that was incurable so by forcing us to have children early in life between the age of 15-30(?) was probably the best way to keep our genes alive.
But today with our advances in medicine i think this has changed into something of a downside since we require quite a bit of education before someone can get a good job and provide for their families. So today i think it would be better for the genes survival to have an span between 25-40 years instead.

---- Everything is evolving and now we are learning how to control our own evolution, for better or worse.

Well, i think living longer would be good, if some limitations on offspring would be created, something like that each parent is allowed to have 1 child. = a couple can have 2 children.

    Pros:
    - Less money spent on education since the productive years of each person would be much longer, just think of what the pay would be for a *nix admin with 120 years of experience that still have 80 years left until retirement :)
    - Less money spent on caring for the elderly, since people would probably choose to end their life sooner since not everyone would want to be 300 years.
    - More time to save money for when you get old.
    - Less need for healthcare since people are 'younger' longer.
    - You could spend 30 years in school if you really wanted, or maybe go back to school once every 40 years if you are bored with your current line of work.
    - When you choose to get children you could have saved up enough money to stay at home with them until they move out, if you want.
    - Less rush on life.

    Cons:
    - A life-sentence would really be something then =)
    - Just hope that you only get 'old' just before you die.
    - Hope for a creative job. Don't even want to imagine a 100 years as a garbage-collector (or sanitation-worker if you want to be politically correct :)
    - I would guess it would result in a lot more divorces.. 200 years with the same girl... 200 years of shopping... GAAAH where's that poison-needle? =)

So i think that this would be a good thing for almost everyone.

    Some more hints for you:
    - Use a testbed before doing upgrades
    - Make pkg/cfg-backups before doing a upgrade so you can easily downgrade if you run into any problems.
    - Make binary pkg's on the testbed that you then can install on the production system to speed up the upgrade-process.

One BIG suggestion for you. If running a critical system, always have a test-system where you do the upgrade in advance to see what you need to do during the upgrade.

And the same goes for ANY critical system, whatever OS it might be running.
I have seen tons of problems like these on debian/redhat/gentoo/Suse/HPUX/MS Windows systems so it does not matter what you run. You always run into these kind of problems if you just assume that everything will get updated correctly.

    Pros:

    - Bathroom - no need to worry about water leaks since there are no cracks between concrete-blocks to any connecting room and to make it even better just spray the walls and floor with some type of water-seal to protect the concrete.
    - Noise - No cracks in walls so the house should be quite isolated from external noise.
    - Easy to add thermal and noise isolation in the building, just add a foam-spray nossle to the robot and you can have automatic isolation in the build-process. add a layer in every roof/wall and it should be very noise-resistant & have good thermal isolation.
    - Fire persistent - If you build every wall in the building in this material fires should not spread easily between rooms the building.
    - Easy&cheap to build

    Cons:
    - Since it's a very static building it will probably not be very resistant even to small changes in ground-movement, but maybe they can fix this with adding some type of rubber-seal between walls in the build-process.

And a question, how do they build the roofs?? Since they don't have anything to lay down the concrete on they need to build that in a separate place and then lift that onto the building and that would still require construction-workers on-site.

    Wikipedia snippets:
    - Democracy (literally "rule by the people", from the Greek -demokratia demos, "people," and kratos, "rule") is a form of government by the will of the people.

    - Polity (Greek: or transliterated as Politeía or Políteuma) is a general term that refers to political organization of a group. It is often used to describe a loosely organized society such as a tribe or community, but can mean any political group including a government or empire, corporation or academy. It is also used in the phrase ecclesiastical polity as a synonym of church government.
Aristotle described a polity as rule by the many, who are neither wealthy nor poor, in the interests of the whole community. He believed it to be the ideal form of government somewhere between oligarchy and democracy.

    - Oligarchy (Greek , Oligarkhía) is a form of government where political power effectively rests with a small, elite segment of society (whether distinguished by wealth, family or military prowess). The word oligarchy is from the Greek words for "few" ( óligon) and "rule" ( arkho).

And for the ones with laptops that brings the mouse/keyboard with them a easy way to solve this could be to have something to charge the mouse/keyboard via the laptop...

Maybe even combine this tech with some type of data-transfer capability so you could put down a combination of computer/monitor/speakers/mouse/keyboard/video-gra bber/network-adapter/cellphone/PDA/USB-hub and have simple communication via the 'power-pad' without any cables.. The basic idea for this law is that nobody should be able to force you into buying something. And if they still send you something it's yours to use until they send someone to collect it. But that's easily avoided, just never be around when they come to collect the item(s).

I think that this is not comparable with the bank-account comparison since you have not recieved anything, just got an accidental increase in the allowed withdrawable amount (accidental credit). But if the bank somehow sends you letter with a few thousands and requests payment for it it should be a completley different story. =)

Without any law like this it would be terrible... Just imagine a company that sends out a couple of million cheap items and charging the same price for the item as it would cost to send it back...

And if you really want to speed up the bootprocess on some system have a look at the linuxbios project, if you mainboard is supported that is.

And some hints on how to speed up the bios "boot":
    - Hard-configure the HD's you have in your system and deactivate any unused master/slave positions.
    - If running PATA make shure master/slave is connected to the correct position on the cable and use the jumper to set it to master or slave instead of autodetect.
    - Activate fast-boot
    - Disable anything you dont use on the mainboard, if running linux check if you can disable IDE controllers you dont use for booting, some might still be usable after booting the OS.
    - Activate fast-boot, on a warm-boot there are alot of tests that can be skipped.
    - If you have any bootable cards in the system disable their boot-bios so they dont have to be scanned during the POST.

    Just a few hints.
