Another proof (if needed) of the total uselessness of american corporate media.

China's dictatorial government doesn't even see them as a threat... Sleep tight america.

  3. Re:Social Contract in the real world on Does Adblock Violate A Social Contract? · · Score: 2, Interesting

There is no social contract with advertisers in the real world. When you walk down the street, if you are looking at the ground, you are not violating a social contract you have with the advertisers to keep your head up and keep an eye out for new products.

    Exactly.

How sad is this ? When a very, very tiny (insignificant in terms of numbers) part of the internet population use a tool to get rid of advertisment and corporate junk, big words like "breaking social contract" are written... but when advertisers shove their corporate propaganda on a massive scale in schools... everything is ok, it's just business as usual.... How nice !

Developing countries government adopting linux seems to be a win-win situation:

    - Government can save licence money (provinding there's no TCO increase) and use it for more important things (a what is not more important than giving away money to some first world corporation ?)
    - People (government IT staff, users etc.) get linux training. Which will eventually transform into more linux user and more contributions.

In short, that kind of moves would greatly help linux reach the "critical mass" holy grail.
Anyway, I hope this is not just wishful thinking...

    Agreed.
iPod was successful a long time before itune was even significant... and Creative are trying to get a share of the market by focusing on itune competitors ? Wow, that's clever.

Apple competitors: How about putting out a non-ugly mp3 player for a change ?

There are many devices out there that are technically superior to the ipod (batteries, features etc)... but none are in the same league as Apple products design wise.
It's as simple as that... You don't need a magic formula to "gun" the ipod. Just hire non-blind designers.

    Funny you mention the Swiss.

    This is BS.
Yes, most men in Switzerland that are serving in the army have their army rifle at home... but the bullets are in a *sealed cans* that are only meant to be opened in case of war.

    Guns aren't the problem.
As far as switzerland is concerned, guns with no ammo aren't a problem indeed.

Actually the only time people do use their "war ammo" is when they want to commit suicide.

You would be suprised how anti-gun the majortiy of the swiss population is. Switzerland is a safe country (mostly because it's a rich one). As in most of europe people don't want to have anything to do with guns (or any other tools designed to kill people).

Porn industry won't "choose a side", they'll wait and use which ever format has won the war.
This is an industry were production costs are very hum... "tight", they can't afford to put out discs that only a small fraction of their consumers will be able to watch.

You also have to consider the fact that the vast majorty of porn is now shot using DV (which is *not* HD), so putting out high-resolution porn would also mean a major production costs increase...

But it's very real... only a fool would not acknowledge the importance of porn for emerging formats.

File size is still a problem though (even a bigger one than with MPEG4) but quality isn't as bad as MPEG4, and MPEG2 is much better than MPEG4 in term of editing and handling (you can actually USE what you record).

But these are still expensive products, I think Id'still go the DV way.

However, if I had the cash, I would have of these with me... the "on the go video" factor is really nice.
