    Yes some might buy it as a status icon, but for a lot of professionals, it is a *tool* that enables them to do more/faster/more money.

    And they're about the same price, right? If we're talking about something that gets used very little (like say, my outside locker?) 20$ for a device that is used 5 minutes a month. Totally worth it...

    Most of the emission is in the infrared (why they're not efficient as lighting devices)

    *Bullshit, outlay of $200 to replace all bulbs in house, electric bill dropped by about the same in the first month.*

    Bullshit, it doesn't cost me that for 2 months in winter including heating and running 2 computers 24/7

    Those in my bathroom (4*25w decorative) have been there for at least 15 years, and they come from the dollar store. Replacing them will probably be expensive since I need round ones. Otherwise it's replace everything. And I need them to be dimmable and warm color too (around 2500k). I'll keep the inefficient ones thank you (at -20C I don't mind them putting out heat)

    Most of the energy output of an incandescent is *not* light (about only 5% is light).

    So at present time in Montreal (-20C), my incandescent lighting is not wasting that much energy...

    Not the same. Getting a Pardon won't allow someone to work in sensitive jobs or Law Enforcement as the criminal record is only removed from public records, not erased. Try crossing into the US with only your Canadian pardon. you won't be able to.

    But I agree it doesn't change anything as he's been dead for long...

    $34,000/year in China or India is a lot. Not so in North America or Europe (lower middle-class at best in many places). You have to take in account the cost of living. I wouldn't even try living in New-York on that amount.

    You could if the silicon was designed to allow it (ie: like in old webcams)

    ASUSupdate is able to flash the BIOS without giving it admin rights, so It could be used silently I guess (on Windows XP at least last time I did it).

    For other systems (*NIX including Mac OS), just make it part of a system update.

    Like they had on the original iSight? or on my 13 year old Logitech?

    What's mind boggling though is it would probably *less* expensive to just hardwire the LED with the camera itself. If it's being used, light the LED.
