I can watch movies at home on a big screen with good sound for under 3k$, my setup is *way* below that...
-Windows Media Center 2k5 HTPC with 600w 5.1 system, plays about everything I can throw at it. -95" screen (1080p projector) -Nice '70s comfy couch -Popcorn maker in the kitchen, fridge in the living room.
Why should I go to the theater unless I want to buy a 15$ candy bar?
If Apple was able to change architectures *twice* on hte Mac, and also change OSes without preventing software from working, I'm pretty sure Intel and MS can pull it off too.
68k to PPC (using emulation), PPC to Intel (using emulation), and OS9 to OS X (again, using emulation).
Do we *really* need a modern CPU to carry instructions from a Pentium? no, it can be done with emulation. Same goes for Windows.
I'm pretty sure a modern multiple core multi Ghz CPU would be able to virtualize that old win 3.x program that needed a 486 or a Pentium. Less silicon & less legacy code.
Panther (10.4) can run OS 9 software via Classic, PPC machines could emulate a 68k CPU, and x86 macs could use Rosetta to emulate PPC code. Pretty seamless, so I'm wondering why Intel hasn't done it yet...

Personally, I always get my meat at a know butcher. That's about the only way I can make sure the animal was slaughtered in a civilized way. (meaning not Halal)
I'm running MCE 2005 on my TV with two analog tuners (useless since September 2011 in Canada). It runs MAME and other emulators, and I can run about anything I want on that thing (the limiting factors are its CPU, an old 3000+ Athlon and its video card, an old 6600 non-gt silent)
I've owned a Panther (Grand Marquis), and you wouldn't believe the abuse that thing could take. A Civic totalled itself rearending me at a stop light, managing to break the bolts retaining the plastic bumper cover.
Besides, how many of those Vics were police cruisers hit on the highway?

The only difference is 9x will automatically start windows without the user having to type in WIN at the command prompt. (old DOS 7 betas even had AUTOWIN=x in one of the config files so if it detected Windows it would automatically load the GUI, just as 9x does)
But *ALL* versions will automatically load the GUI unles told not to do so. Be it 95A,B,C / 98/98SE, even the old build 437 I was using at the time.

Tried VMware, Virtualbox and even an old version of VirtualPC, all have issues or non-working hardware. I still boot an old machine from time to time with 98 on it...
"So basically, with 95B the whole game changed, since the underlying DOS was only a bootloader, but the 95A version was not."
No. Even 98SE has full DOS underneath its graphical interface. By adding BootGUI=0 under [CONFIG] in MSDOS.SYS, you will boot into a pure DOS environment.

If only Lucasarts were listening... I mean, the possibility they could still *sell* the original X-wing & TIE series (DOS ones, with iMuse, not the CD-audio crap) aren't just there, so unless it's
1- Just because they don't want to 2- Some code might have been licensed

Crazy idea here, what about *not* taking your email when not at work?
I know it's a long shot, but hey, it's worth a try...
Dr Sbaitso's attitude was so cool...

Better question is who still has a land line?

2GB ram, 3 1TB drives + a 120GB for system
And newer games?
Some games might require PSN for their DRM, or might require a newer firmware. Now, since most stores won't take back games, it's either
a) give in and remove OtherOS by updating the firmware
b) bite it and lose 60$ for an unplayable game.
What if my console breaks and has to be serviced? I would *love* my carmaker to disable cruise control because the car was serviced under warranty...
*And they're betting it on 'people never read the small print' (which should be illegal IMHO, as EULAs)*
Replying to myself here, /. doesn't want me to edit my posts...
That's why people get to pay 400$/month for a car that is advertised for 169/month. That's just a slimy behavior.
And they're betting it on 'people never read the small print' (which should be illegal IMHO, as EULAs)
But it's way from the first corporation that got caught its pants down while trying to skirt the law (or ethics)
I know, but it's kinda ridiculous how they get damaged in low speed collisions, where nobody would get hurt at those speeds...
They're not sorry about the bundled *extras*, they're sorry they *got caught*...

Why is it under Preferences | General instead of, I don't know, crazy idea, under Preferences | Security ?
And 4 weeks? They're leaving that hole open for 4 fscking weeks?
1- Announce a security flaw
2- Leave it open for a month
3- ???
4- Profit!

WinME was the one trying to prevent the user from booting into pure DOS.

Guess what? *ALL* 9x versions run on top of DOS 7.x, ME was 8.0...

So basically never buy about 95% of stuff :p
