    I can tell your a youngen ;)

Ok, so I'm only 28, but I remember the days when a 286 at 12Mhz (instead of 8) and *4* meg of ram (instead of 2) was the bee's knees. That was only 15 years ago!

New release PC's have always been 'overpowered' for what 90% of people use them for. Always have been. So the Laptop will still handle most things perfectly well. My 800Mhz Athlon runs EVERYTHING I want it to without fuss.

"My wife has a mind of her own."

Which is precisely why if she chooses to use given software she should be responsible for fixing any problems that crop up from using said software.

I don't confront my g/f about how to cook certain things, if I like it different I cook for myself. Yet if I totally fug it up I DONT say to her 'hey, this meal isn't working out right, can you come and fix/remake it for me'

Having a mind means more than being stubborn enough to use software of there choice, it also comes with taking on the responsibility that something goes wrong, not expecting someone else to bend over backwards to fix it but looking into it yourself.

Messing around with the partition-size probably hosed whatever checksum XP does on the partition, and it refused to boot from it.

I had two hard drives both formatted as windows drives. I ran QTparted and reformatted a part of one to ext3. I then also found out that windows wouldn't load from grub, I looked into it.

Turns out all I needed to do was change grubs windows boot from hd1 to hd0. Not sure why it chose hd1 in the first place... but all works fine now.

The threat of a DOS attack is quite mild to actually writing truly malicious code. Something along the lines of repartitioning the harddrive and reformat the drives upon reboot. The viruses that we have seen have been mainly to slow or disconnect the victim from the network.

Thats the whole idea.... so they stay alive long enough to continue living. The reason we don't have a huge problem with the Ebola virus is because it kills people within a localised area so fast it doesn't get the chance to spread over a larger geographic area.

If a virus did indeed manage to do the damage you speak of, it would gain minimal coverage, because after run once it has killed itself in the process.

Why would I want to use Konqueror when Mozilla is the most successful Open Source web browser there is, people talk about being able to customize KDE, I saw no way to switch my default web browser to Mozilla or Firefox. By default KDE uses KOffice, why would I want to use KOffice when there is already a successful office suite, Open Office MEPIS comes on a one CD install. KDE desktop, OpenOffice, and Mozilla is the Default install. If you cant configure another distro yourself. Just grab Mepis coz it has what you want ;)

This sort of thing has been going on for decades... I stayed on my 286 12Mhz for a fair while because I did not need a 386. When the 386SX came out, I bought this considerably cheaper than the 386DX... When the 486 DX50 came out we heard cries of 'but you don't need that much processing power yet' from the geeks (the ones not running Wing commander at least ;) ) and for most people they were right. ITs just that now we are talking CPU speeds in the Ghz and RAM in the hundreds of megs... still the same principle as when people were going to 16Mhz 386 with 8 meg ram from a 12 Mhz 286 with 4 meg ram and 40meg HDD.
