...Being On The Moon Before The Red Plague. Doesn't sell anymore, unless you can sell Go Back On The Moon Before China Goes There For The First Time. And you won't sell that one.
How about being on the moon before the evil terrorists get there?
...and if they pull off the PS3 thing well enough to set blu-ray as the new hd standard...
Based on their poor E3 performance many believe they will not pull off the 'PS3 thing'! That's what this is discussion is about.
If they are lucky/smart they might own the movie business and Blu-Ray will be the standard. But if they loose the gaming market in this battle, that would be big loss indeed. The gaming market has room to grow to many times it's current size. All you need to do is make gaming appeal to Girls/Women/25+yo.
The medium for movies could well be irrelevant in 5 years because of broadband. You could watch movies on any device. Games can also be streamed in the future, but will still be device specific, so moving into a new market with gaming now is in my eyes the most important thing.
With this in mind I believe MS understands online gaming best, and Nintendo is best at targeting new gamers. Sony doesn't seem to have a clear vision, except to push blu-ray, regardless of the price. They are partying like it's 1999...
That's because this way FF stays mean and lean, and it's difficult to add features that everyone wants.
Also, small stuff like this might not really need an extensions. Smart/. readers can probably find this in the about:config page.
To enable some of the RAD Ruby will infer much information from simple syntax and naming schemes. So if you start a class naming it Person, Ruby will look at a table called People to try to figure out the different fields/properties for that class. That's why it comes with some knowledge about plurals built-in.
It's probably not that disturbing if you are used to it, and it is exactly what makes Ruby so fast for development. It's convention over configuration. In a different toolset, you might have to make a mapping from class to table using XML for instance.
What's so wonderful about a new-generation console with previous-generation performance? Why buy a new console that doesn't offer any new performance boost?
There will be a performance boost. But some new features don't really add to the gaming experience, stuff like fancy dolby, HD graphics or Blu-Ray medium, so why go there if you just want to be about gaming/fun?
In other words, the Wii doesn't seem to fill any niche that isn't already served.
Have you seen the controller? Do you realise the niche?? Imagine getting older people (>30) and women/girls to play, that's not just a niche, that's like the huge black hole that no company has been able to reach. If they pull it off, it'll turn everything upside down.
Why is time considered the 4th dimension? In your explanation, you say many 2 dimensional objects can be stacked in the same place but in the third dimension, and compare it to many objects in the same place in the third dimension but at different times. That last part does'nt fly for a mountain, there can not be anything else in that place for millions of years.
Also, more generally, time is completely different from the first three dimensions. They can all be measured with the same ruler, but time can't, it differs. Also, a regular shape in all dimensions:
1. a dot, ending in 1 point 2. a line, ending in 2 points, having 2 sides, which are dots 3. a square, ending in 4 points, having 4 sides, which are lines 4. a cube, ending in 8 points, having 6 sides, which are squares 5. a hypercube, ending in 16 points, having 8 sides, which are cubes
The fifth object is said to be the natural follow up to the previous shapes in four dimensions. I find that more logical, also to think that time for this hypercube is the same as it is for the other shapes.
They are ofcourse documenting everything about this process. But not to share it with you and me, but to use in their own business support for companies that want to make that same switch. That documentation (knowledge) is be worth too much to just give it away.
We just bought Visual Studio 2005, it came with three CD's of MSDN documentation including a special documentation browser that integrates on-disk and on-line documentation.
I did the my_doctor thing, I didn't see the telephone number in the first result, so I added "telephone" to my query. All of the sudden I got one of those aggregate websites (sort of yellow pages rip-off) that don't mean anything filled with ads. Is that also the power of Google?

The problem is that if anybody wants to *use* your nice secure AJAX/RAILS/etc. application, they need to turn Javascript ON in their browser
How many people have turned js off?
Just because there are corporations in the world more evil than Sony, doesn't invalidate his point.
The problem with the printer manufacturers is that they all do it. So there's no escaping, other than not printing, which could easily become a problem. And you don't know how he feels about that situation, so you shouldn't use that argument.
But with Sony, there's competition that is more willing to use standards, and are less evil. So a boycot is possible, and because of the rootkit fiasco, there's every reason to be angry. As well as suspicious. I wouldn't be sursrised if Sony has their own E-book format, that you could only buy at their own stores. That would not be a huge leap for mankind, but rather another step backwards for consumers.
I say the sceptisism is very much at place here.
Oh come on. GameFaqs for reviews. It's either a 9 or a 10, and the "Best Game Ever!!!" or it's a 2, "Avoid ayt all costs". Most these reviews are written by young people, and most of them have this strange 'fanboy' syndrome.
just ask any man on the street if they think you should be able to patent a mouse, website or film plot and they will tell you it's madness
No, they'll tell you they don't give a **** as long as they can go and see the movie or visit the website, and they don't care about the mouse at all. Just like they don't give a **** about the program they use to open their documents.
Seriously, the reason they get away with so much crap today is because the average person is too damn lazy to care about it, let alone do something. Boycot? Yeah right, give them a cool trailer fot that patented movie and they'll flock to the theaters buying their 7$ popcorn along the way.
Do I understand this correctly: After three years of fighting terror, US citizens are not required to have or carry photo id?
So how do these people get anything done, like open a bank account, get membership at a video rental place, or vote?
We can't live without streams on our Windows 2003 server running Services For Macintosh. The Mac has some types of fonts stored completely in a resource fork. This translates nicely to an alternative data stream on Windows. The only strange thing is that Explorer is not capable (or willing) to show the file size as a total of all streams, so these fonts show up as 0kb files.
So pretty usefull for compatibility with Macs, and some have said it can be usefull for virus writers to hide their programs, but I think most modern antivirus programs know how to scan ADS.
The deeper meaning is that you enjoy the ride, not the end.
I agree with you on the last 2 parts being the lesser, but looking back, I must say I have indeed enjoyed the ride.
I think that the situation regarding HD-DVD and Blu-Ray is relevant as well, because that drives Sony's strategy.

Investors != gamers
As stated in the comments on the original article, first4internet is run by former Sony executives. Smells fishy...
