  1. From personal experience, as a smoker for 15 years, smoking upwards of 2 packs a day, switching to vape HAS made a tremendous impact on my bank account and how I feel. It tastes better than cigarettes (DUH!), my lungs don't hurt, I don't wheeze anymore, my car doesn't smell like ciggarettes, and I don't have ashes everywhere. Switching to vapor has been a solid WIN for me. I have been vaping almost 4 years now and successfully quit smoking. I thought one day I would try and smoke a ciggarette and I couldn't finish it and thought, how the HELL did I start doing this in the FIRST place! So honestly, I don't see how vaping could LEAD a person to smoking...that to me is INSANE. Only a weak minded fool would do that...sadly there are too many of those around.

  2. This argument is silly "We do not want to make it impossible to contact family, first responders or medical professionals in an emergency situation.". The people that have not turned in their Note 7 and gotten a replacement phone that won't explode would be able to contact family, first responders, or medical professionals IF they did turn in their phones. The phone is dead people! There are no software updates, no new versions of Android, no new features, no support whatsoever. Just turn in the phone, get a new one and when Samsung releases the next version of whatever BIG ass phone you want, get it.

XP had a lot of compatibility problems with hardware and drivers were scarce initially. It wasn't until SP2 that XP became good. I think people forget that fact when they sit around and bash Vista. I really like Vista and Win7 is much faster. The main thing I don't like about Vista is the Visual Studio debugger detaches itself from IIS after a very short period of being on a break point and being idle.

I agree competely. My expeirience with Windows 7 has been very positive. On my hardware, Windows 7 x64 leaves Vista x64 in the dust in all aspects of performance. To me, and the type of computing I do (.NET Development) this version will be a worthy upgrade when it RTM's. I was very surprised to find that the it was able to detect and install all but one driver I needed to make my media card reader work. Although, I have to say the "super bar" is going to take some getting used to, but overall the UI refinements made are welcome.

THe only problems I have yet to fix are the sound and touchpad. I hate the tap to click. Sound drivers were updated from Microsoft after installation and the driver appears to be working, just no sound coming out of it.

  9. Additional Thoughts on Is Visual Basic a Good Beginner's Language? · · Score: 1

In my experience, I have run accross more VB.NET code that thought, "WTF is this", then "Wow, this is good code". I think that C# developers are more prone to understanding the BCL (Base Class Library) then VB.NET folks. Why you might ask. VB developers were most used to writing there own code to solve a problem, mostly because they didn't have a good API or class library to work with. C# being a new language caused a lot of developers to focus more on the BCL then the language. For example, I know/work with developers that wrote their own "function" or method that return the extension of a filename. I have seen 25 line methods to do that, created by VB developers, where most C# developers would use System.IO.Path.GetExtension method.

  10. VB.NET is LAME on Is Visual Basic a Good Beginner's Language? · · Score: 1

Ok, first off, I have programmed in VB since VBDOS days, and I work in an environment that uses VB.NET primary because, the management feels it will be easier to find VB.NET developers then C#. C# and VB.NET are essentially the same, just syntax, however I have found that the using statement in C# is quite nice, although they added it to VB.NET 2005, its not quite the same. I have noticed the VB.NET complier takes longer, and I think its because of the fact VB is wordy. If MyVariable = SomeValue Then ... Ened If seems like more to parse then if (MyVariable == SomeValue) {..}. I think C# is cleaner because of the fact its not so wordy. But some will argue that the wordyness is good. I think what it does it make it easier for anyone to learn programming. C# syntax is a little more advanced in my opinion. Where I work, most people that are programmer are not programmers, so VB.NET make's sense, because its closer to english, essentially, IF MY PHONE NUMBER STARTS WITH XXX THEN I MUST BE A USER AND NOT AN ADMISISTRATOR is easy for a non-programmer to understand and code with VB.NET. One of my pet peeves with VB is the Option Strict and Option Explicit. In my opinion, it is ALWAYS good to decare your variables of being a certain type, in other words, NEVER do Dim I, but rather Dim I as integer is better. C# in fact does not let you get away with such mistakes. I just recently converted one of our applications to VB.NET 2005 and VS2005 gave me a crap load of errors saying implicit convertsion from type X to type X is disallowed. This wouldn't happen as much in a C# project, because you were never given option strict, EVERYTHING IS STICT. In my opinion, C# and C style languages encourage better coding, while VB.NET promotes sloppy coding. If you are a VB.NET developer, I don't mean to slam you, but you have to admit, not declaring types and not casting to the right type can lead to stupid bugs.

My wife is a programmer as well and does not have her degree, and yet she schools co-workers who do have degrees all day.

Bottom line, just because someone has a degree does not necessarily make them better. Its the "real world" experience that counts the most IMHO.
