The simple fact of the matter is that compared to OS X, or Linux (or hell even BSD for that matter) running KDE or GNOME, Windows looks and feels antiquated. Thats it - its that simple.
It does not even have a strong command line interface for experienced users. I think what we're seeing is that the media is following the progress of innovation.
The leadership of this country (specifically business leaders) at some point in our recent history decided that the best way to make money is by just siphoning cash as a middle man. Oh wait, thats not the right word for it. Ahhh, yes, its comming to me - Service Based Economy.
This is not something that accidently happened - it was a conscious decision made several years ago when it became cheaper to buy stuff made over seas and sell it here.
To compound the issue, companies here tend to "hold back" advances while it is even remotely possible to continue to siphon cash from people using older technology. At the last possible moment - a switch to new technology is made.
The twenty steps listed in the parent are all important. But ultimately the steps are treating the symptoms, not the cancer:
1) Any sense of discovery or exploration is completely dead in this country and the highest levels.
2) Labor is cheaper in other countries. Engineer in our country (software and other) are being treated as day laborers. Worst yet, unskilled day laborers. That needs to change before our students again begin taking an interest in the sciences.
You make an interesting point, albeit one that I disagree with. I'm not saying that I have the right answer - just a different one. Regardless - its an interesting discussion topic.
I do not feel that the users (or anyone else in the community for that matter) has any right to expect ANYTHING from open source developers. Indivuduals who are contributing are contributing because its a project that interests them, they see (and can help) fill a need, or they are just plain bored. The bottom line is that they are doing it on their own time and for their own reasons.
That being said, if a company is making OSS contributions and said company or an individual working for that company on that project (and thus a representitive of that company) conducts themselves in an unprofessional manor, than the company and individual should be held responsible.
I feel the need to chime in here. Sadly, I have spent some time administering and developing on SAP systems.
When dealing with SAP, on ANY operating system, you NEVER EVER NEVER turn on autopatching of the OS. When I was doing it, we were primarily running on Windows servers and moving some to Sun. OS Patches almost always break some part of SAP's software. As such, admins are explicitly instructed to WAIT on patching the OS until SAP has had time to evaluate the OS patch and create any patches of their own to fix issues that may have been introduced.
I agree with the parent, this admin is an idiot and its only a matter of time before he hoses up his Windows SAP install as well.
Okay, I'm sold. You simly MUST be a conservative operative.:)
Lets being disecting your comments, shant we?
At first, your camp completely denyed that global warming was happening. Now, you consent that it is but claim "more study is necessary" and that you don't think we are causing it.
Then, you site strong evidence like "Not too long ago, Chicago was covered in ice." Why don't you tell all the nice/.ers exactly when that was? Your statement makes it sound like it happened in the 1970s.
Then you are nice enough (in the EXACT same fashion as our fearless leader) to throw in a stupid, completly unrelated (but true) fact about the farm land in Indiana. Its a good technique to get the mindless sheeple "feelin good" and having faith in what you say.
Now we're on to your ridiculous claim about how we could not put a dent into the planets ecological system. Allow me to update you - we HAVE. CO2 levels are higher than they have ever been. Most typical volcanic eruptions pale in comparisson to the crap we are spewing out. The supervolcanos are the exception rather than the rule. Bad comparisson.
"Many geologists" - really, which ones? Any that are not on the payroll of BP? Regardless, geologists can't scoop up a handfull of sand and tell you that. It takes years of sedimentation to accumulate data. When is the most recent they are able to report? Don't get me wrong, I think that geology has provided us alot of useful historical information and has been instrumental in furthering our understanding of how our planet works. BUT, I'd MUCH rather listen to the guys who are accurately measuring the temperatures NOW. Current ly, our instrumentation tells us that we're warming at an unprecidented rate.
I appologize for being "rude", but I'm frusturated with all the FUD thats been spread around about this issue. Wake up people, 1984 called, they want their tactics back...
"Shit happens -- let's work with the way the world works rather than trying to recreate how it was all the time."
Actually, that's the problem. Things did not happen as "nature" intended. Entire populations (that were in North America) of species were hunted to extinction by the humans (native americans) of that time. There is evidence showing how in many cases, "grazing" animals were "herded" off of cliffs in concerted efforts. Eliminate the food supply, the predators go.
It IS great that we are finally to a point scientifically to restore balance. I believe that we are morally obligated to do so.
While I see where you are comming from - the position you stated starts us down a slipery slope.
So - I can not really argue with your point - it makes sense. But then again, should someone who is predisposed to cancer be denied medical coverage? Just as an example, suppose people with allele X have a 99% chance of getting cancer Y. An insurance company, from their perspective, is perfectly within their rights to deny coverage. It would simply NOT be worth it to them. Is that right?
Lets take it a step further. We have the genome mapped. Suppose parents get their child tested for this cancer linked allele very early in the pregnancy. Parent set A has enough money to pay the doctors to correct the defective gene. Parent set B does not and their child is born with the gene. Child A gets medical benefits and a good life and Child B is pretty much doomed from the start.
See where I am going with this? I think the easier solution is just to keep the outcomes of genetic tests private - ALWAYS.
This leaves you with ONE argument: Why should people WITH the means be punished and NOT get the advantage (as they already do with everything else)? The answer is simple - they are not being punished. They can still pay to get the defective gene corrected. However, keeping the test records private just maintains a level playing field.
On a related note - if testing becomes widespread, why still have insurance companies? Its obvious they will not take people predisposed to certain conditions and the people they will take will probably never develop those conditions. It makes for an interesting path to follow.
I agree with you - those companies have immensely helped the popularity of open source.
You missed the part about "American Multinationals...." This is yet another economic attack against the US out of Europe. You'll notice that they conveniently left out EU companies like SAP that LOVE to ride the Linux bandwagon as well.
Between them (EU) and the China/India pact - things are not looking good for us.
You, my friend, are an asshole. Do you think that the people (single or otherwise) that are reading these posts NEED shit from you to make their live's even better? On top of that, whoever modded you to Insightful is also an asshole if they think that your rant about "people having kids" is somehow poeticly intelligent. I'm 28, married, with no kids - so don't even bother with the "your're just one of them crap". I do however consider myself open minded enough to have a heart about other peoples problems.
I say this in the "nicest" way possible, FUCK OFF!
First off, this is supposed to be a lighthearted "this is what I'll be doing Wendesday evening" series of posts. Not this whining "married people make me work more" crap.
But, since we're already talking about it and I'm too pissed off to talk Star Wars now...
I've been on both sides of the fence. I've worked 80+ hour weeks and am now doing just about 40. The bottom line is this: if the company is having problems keeping everyone to about 40 hours a week - its the company's problem NOT anyone else's. Single people should head out at 5pm (or whatever the time happens to be) just like EVERYONE else.
Now that being said, if your team is in a crunch (which is normal to happen from time to time), there is nothing wrong with putting in extra time to help the company get through the rough patches. However, if the company is constantly in a "rough spot" and demanding more hours of people constantly, there is a problem with the company not the employees.
If you are single and being victimized, grow a pair and speak up for yourself. There is more to life than work. Like, Star Wars.;-)
Overall, you make some interesting points. Namely, points 1, 2, and 4. However, I take issue with the following:
3. Lucas equates "skill" with "flash". A skilled Yoda would be more believable just standing there and blocking every attack (like the two Jedi did when faced with the attack droids in ep 1).
Think this through. In melee combat, proximity negates skill. At some point, Yoda would have been cut down if "he just stood there". Yoda HAD to move.
Finally, your closing comment:
Ep 3 is a fan boy movie. You get to see the things you've already seen and you get flashy battles. People like flashy battles, right?
Did you even READ the parent/originating review? While I agree with how you feel about the first two, the whole point about why this particular reviewer thought that EP3 was a good movie was that the best scenes were NOT the combat/fX scenes.
I will go see this movie and withhold judgement until then.
To be clear, I come down on the science side of this argument. That being said, I AM a catholic and believe in God.
I understand where you are comming from with your argument. However, there is a way to reconcile it. Life on this planet is about suffering. I'd like to think that things work themselves out on the other side and that those people you talk of are much better off. Read up on the life of Pope John Paul. It ties into the whole concept of "suffering" and does a much better job of explaining things than I could ever do.
when these people can/will run over our consitiution like this. Is this not the country founded on the principle of the protection from the "trynany or the majority"?
You simple can NOT argue with them. Here is an excerpt from the first site I listed:
Do You Believe that Evolution is True?
If so, then provide an answer to the following questions. "Evolution" in this context is the idea that natural, undirected processes are sufficient to account for the existence of all natural things.
Lets disect this. "Natural" - okay, I can buy that. "Undirected" - absolutely NOT! They are right, using this terminology I can not defend evolution. However, evolution IS directed. Thus, the whole point of natural selection. That is, a particular allele is selected for dependent on its fitness for a specific environment.
So, where does this get us? There is simply no argument to be had. They will continually push for the abolishment of evolution until they get it.
Now for what should REALLY scare you. Listen to Christian talk radio every now and then. What is coming down the pike is scarier than what they are doing "publicly" now. The new thing seems to be to "push" women back into their rightful places. That is, barefoot and pregnant in the kitchen. Women should not have careers, but rather they should be "life-givers" and subordinate/respectful of their benevolent husbands. You think I am kidding??? I CHALLENEGE you to listen to the radio. How do I reconcile this with my belief in God you ask? Simple: Rules for physics, genetics and biology (evolution) was God's will. The fossil evidence left behind is just proof of that. Why is the evolution of life on this planet any less miraculous than the story put forth in genesis?
Evolution has been accepted by the Pope to not be in conflict with the chruch's teaching when taken in the context that I outlined above. Furthermore, several other christian churches agree with this view.
If we were discussing computers, I would totally come down on your side of this issue. However, we are not.
We are discussing a market in which Sony has had a stranglehold for a few years. The entrance of the XBox into this market has done great things to foster inovation (for both companies involved). Its a situation in which we, the consumer, win. Do not point out Nintendo. That company has only survived by catering to the niche "kiddie" market and avoids direct competition with Sony at all costs.
At my house, you'll find Linux on both of my desktops. On my entertainment center, you'll find my XBox. You have to look at the big picture - competition is good for everyone.
Anakin lying in a pool of lava with his arms and legs cut off screaming at Obi Wan does not sound dark to you?
You sound exactly like someone who has been completely desensitized by media.

I've tried other styles like white demon. Trust me - depending on what style you are playing, you WILL need to block from time to time. I think what you are running in to is that Legendary Strike is somewhat similar to Thousand Cuts in its speed. Therefore you are on the offensive more often than not and intercepting enemy attacks with your own attacks rather than blocking them.
This is a country built on great principles with great oppurtunities available to people. If you grow up here, take advantage of those oppurtunities, you SHOULD have to give something back. I realize that this is slightly off topic and I'll probably get modded down, but I would argue that the parent is JUST as off topic and I'm not sure how that qualifies as insightful.
Its probably just that I'm getting older, but the link in the parent (to Sony's site) contained some of the weakest (read stupid) advertising I have ever seen.
Come ON:
"And the crystal-clear one-line LCD display makes it simple to find and play whatever you're after."
Exactly HOW does that make it easy for me to scroll through 50+ songs?

Look at the history of OS X. You'll find that it hails from interesting roots - NeXTStep. :)
Look at this.
I'm a recent convert to OS X from Linux (running WindowMaker). Try it before you knock it.
