It's sad that basically these companies are trying to preserve their virtual monopolies on broadband service instead of attempting to work with communities to develop large scale community wide broad band solutions.

A company such as SBC should really be playing both sides here as they could still charge for a fat pipe to be run a town. The difference being that a municipality has the money to subsidize the pipe and basically sell the bandwith to residents at a loss. SBC makes it's money albeit slightly less than if they were to provide service to each household but money none the less.

We'll see what happens, but I'm seriously considering asking some of my neighbors to get together to lease a line from SBC and then set up a community router. It will save all of us money and I'll finally be able to get a decent connection without interference from the 8 other routers my laptop can connect to.

Learn to communicate effectively with other human beings! This may require social interaction that involves not being at a computer. Get out of your room, or parents basement, and talk to people! Go to parties and talk to girls, get over any notions of fear or doubt you have. Be confident. Strong communication skills will get you further than you think.

I wouldn't so much say the the creators of torrents and tracker operators are collaborating. IANAL but I would image if any legal argument could be posed it would be that trackers facilitate the spread of copyrighted material. Well for my parents - bad phone lines and a rural location. We have a saturation of dial-up providers, one of which carries wireless at outrageous prices. Rather than pay 75 dollars a month for 128k wireless access, my father has decided that 28.8 will do, but he'd love broadband.

For my grandparents - old phone lines, they just got tone dialing a few years back when the phone company finally mandated them to do so. my grandfather isn't too keen on running new phone lines, but if cable internet came along he'd sign up since he's already got cable.

My parents live nearly 10 miles outside of town and my grand parents are about 5 miles out. Both far enough away that Charter won't run fiber out that far.

So actually there's alot stopping them. I think that the point is not that people aren't using broadband it's that broadband isn't even an option for some people.
