Can the Skype team stop adding more and more crap to it, and start removing some of the existing bloat?
I want an instant messenger, not something that takes minutes to load, minutes to fetch messages (many of which i already read on another comp or on my phone, but it still alerts me like they are new messages), and when finally loaded i get bombarded with ads that do not interest me in the slightest, or offers to connect Skype to Facebook and the like, something i already told it to go do something anatomically impossible about more than once.
Perfection is achieved, not when there is nothing more to add, but when there is nothing left to take away. Antoine de Saint-Exupery
My favourite movies of the last year or so have been those that are different. Some of them didn't get such good reviews, but they had differences that set them apart from the rest.
For example: Cabin in the Woods (everyone dies! Yay!), Cloud Atlas (intricate plot lines), and Gran Torino (I had expected the ending to be typical hollywood and was pleasantly surprised).
Why is everyone discussion the actual method, and not mentioning why the hell any sort of security system is needed in the first place?
Ok, maybe i'm going to sound like an old fart here, but when i was a kid school doors were only locked overnight. Otherwise it was open access. Not sure how it is in the UK these days, maybe they are also becoming scaredy cats like the 'muricans. I'm now in Russia and our kids' nursery didn't lock the doors either, they go to private school now, and while the door isn't locked we do have a security guard at the entrance, but i'm pretty sure that is more to stop people coming in and nicking stuff rather than protection of/from the children.
Why do i think this is only about control and security theatre? Making sure he kids actually attend? Hell, when i was at school it was normal to occasionally skive off school but the class register would show your absence anyway. If kids are not attending then its time to have a word with the parents.
Until they say they can't find a file they want, and can't remember the name of it, and call their family member who knows computers to ask them to find it for them.
I bet even non-techie users don't like Metro.... for a start, where will they store their documents now? The desktop and the recycle bin were the usual two favourite locations pre Win 8.:P
As opposed to the USA where you can be *legally* stopped and searched for no reason at all within 100km of the border.... a large % of the US population lives within 100km of a border.
What we found is that fully TWO-THIRDS of the United States’ population lives within this Constitution-free or Constitution-lite Zone. That’s 197.4 million people who live within 100 miles of the US land and coastal borders. Nine of the top 10 largest metropolitan areas as determined by the 2000 census, fall within the Constitution-free Zone.
Ladies and Gentlemen, the american white man is afraid. He was afraid of the indians, so he killed them, he was afraid of the black man, so he enslaved him, and now he is afraid of the arab, so he is attacking him.
I'm sure i got that badly wrong, but couldn't find a youtube clip of it, but i agree with Chris Rock on this, the US Leadership (and possibly a substantial part of the population since they don't get up in arms about what their government is doing), is afraid. They are afraid of losing their suburban homes, with their 2 cars and 2 kids with their McDonlands and their comfy lifestyle... strangely enough, it seems like the biggest danger to the US is the US itself, with its economic and foreign policies.
Been saying it for 10 or more years now, the US is the new Rome. Its just a matter of time before the empire eats itself from within and there are Visgoths at the gates.
Seems about right as the police forces in the UK are slowly being privatized. I understand some already are and have been for a while.
When they are privatized then they need to focus on their shareholders interests first.... wonder how much stake groups like the BPI and others will have in such forces?
They do not consider Abraham as the first prophet? I suggest you go edit the wikipedia page and correct it then.
Muslims believe that God is one and incomparable and the purpose of existence is to love and serve God.[1] Muslims also believe that Islam is the complete and universal version of a primordial faith that was revealed at many times and places before, including through Abraham, Moses and Jesus, whom they consider prophets.[2]
Then why do they share the same prophets (up to a point) and have the same origin story?
There may be different deities which influenced the overall design of the relative gods, but there is just much in parallel between them to deny the connection. I mean, they are both the god of Abraham... was Abraham seeing other gods behind Yahweh's back? ,
Also note that despite the claims of the Muslims that Allah is the God of Abraham, this claim must be false when scriptures are compared. See the following for such a comparison, which concludes based on Islamic sources that Allah and YHWH cannot be be same (in fact, Allah has the *opposite* attributes of YHWH, read into that what you will): http://www.answering-islam.org/Shamoun/god.htm [answering-islam.org]
Well, you can analyze it in any way you want, but since Islamic scriptures came much later, and built in the early Hebrew texts (especially the first 5 books of the OT), its pretty clear they started out as being the same deity. They just diverged.
You can say the same about Judaism and Christianity. Judaism doesn't accept the NT, so their god remains the old style god of rages and genocide whereas the Christians have their lovey dovey god who loves us all and forgives us (but still better pray otherwise your ass will fry in hell).
Its not so different to comparing Osiris with Jupiter with Zeus.
Over my career, i've worked in the UK Benefits Agency processing claims, i've worked in their IT departments, i've worked for the outsourced departments later supporting them, and i've worked for a software company which loves agile (but will do waterfall if pushed).
The problem here isn't waterfall/agile. The problem here isn't.Net/Linux.
The problem here is the parties involved. On one side you have a government agency where people obtain seniority largely through age, not skills, and the main skill that is relevant is passing the buck when things go wrong and taking the credit when things go right (really, this is government agencies through and through - not to mention, most people with real skills/brains get out as soon as they can). On the other side you have the dinosaurs of development (not necessarily age, but sizewise).
Somebody earlier in the thread stated this whole project could have been delivered with much lower cost, with just a few devs, in a much shorter time. I'm 100% in agreement with them. The only real complexity of most government systems is the labyrinthine workflows, but they are documents and strictly followed in their paper variants, its just a matter of getting an understanding of this and turning it into software.
My recommended development approach for this project would have been as follows:
1) Hire some decent devs. They don't need to be hotshots, what is being developed is fairly simple from a technical standpoint. Mainly guys who can follow a spec.
2) Take a bunch of people who actually do the work for real, the paper pushers. Take them down the pub and get them rat-arsed. Listen to them bitch and whine about all the idiotic things they have to do in day-to-day operations.
3) Take notes of their bitching! It may help if you are drunk!
4) Any requirements given to you through the official channels are probably worthless. Dump them. They will simply mislead you from what is actually required.
5) Build the system based on what you learned from the drunk employees.
You misunderstood, i don't agree with them doing what they want, but however they want to use the information should be displayed clearly and in plain English (or whatever the speakers language is) as to what they will do with it.
You, the user then have a clear and informed choice as to whether to use the services.
On the one hand, corporations have no right to use your information without your express permission. On the other hand, nobody is forcing you to use such a service that will use your information in a way that you don't like.
Oh, and nice to see the traditional slashdot namecalling coming out straight off the bat.
The hermit crab is one of the most dangerous predators to the Achatina fulica and has been known to use the shell as its home. The coconut crab also views the Achatina fulica as a delicacy. The domesticated duck along with a vast variety of other bird species forage on Giant African Snails. Other mammals such as the wild pig prey on Achatina fulica.

Why do people hate on the US you could ask?
Its an interesting (but off-topic) question. But if people are hating you, there is usually a reason. Think about it.
Ah, in that case its even worse! It indicates the US is lacking behind other countries in producing quality mathematicians!
And our company employs a lot of our programmers from the university maths department. With good reason.
Until they say they can't find a file they want, and can't remember the name of it, and call their family member who knows computers to ask them to find it for them.
Gah, sorry, i'm an expat, got used to referring to everything in km these days.

To paraphrase Chris Rock....

I also heard there are Muslamic Ray guns!
You do know these courts have no legal standing in the UK?
Seems about right as the police forces in the UK are slowly being privatized. I understand some already are and have been for a while.
When they are privatized then they need to focus on their shareholders interests first.... wonder how much stake groups like the BPI and others will have in such forces?
Did Uwe Boll get the rights to make it?
Then the wikipedia article on Islam is wrong?

Oh, and of course.... 4) Profit... erm...
Huxley - Brave New World
Moorcock - Dancers at the End of Time series
And many more, each with their own ideas.
Personally i think its a nice dream. Being able to follow your own dreams without worry about money. As the old saying goes MONEY = SQRT(ALL_EVIL).
There will need to be some system of compensating those who still need to work, some benefit to give them motivation while everyone else slacks off.

why shouldn't customers have this right? Shouldn't all this be mentioned in the T&Cs anyway?
"We reserve the right to use your information however we want. Press Agree to acknowledge you accept this and to start using our wonderful service".
According to an article:
The hermit crab is one of the most dangerous predators to the Achatina fulica and has been known to use the shell as its home. The coconut crab also views the Achatina fulica as a delicacy. Ducks... the US needs lots and lots of ducks.
And i've actually followers of Christianity tell me that their god is not the same as that in Islam. They argued quite vigorously about it.
