  1. Re:MOD PARENT UP on The Importance of Game Length · · Score: 1

FF9 has far more grinding than the other PSX FF games. The true low grinding FF is FF8, where grinding is actually counterproductive (as the enemies level up with you). It's very easy to complete FF8 without leveling up at all and avoiding all random encounters for most of the game.

I can't think of any case of somebody successfully following this schedule long term. It's the best option when sleep time is limited by external circumstances, and you can keep it up for a month or so, but it is not IMO an adequate replacement for normal sleep.

Modafinil feels much better than amphetamines if you're just trying to reduce sleep. There's no real euphoria, but also none of the unpleasant side effects of amphetamine (or even caffeine). It's a very "smooth" feeling stimulant, unlike any other type of stimulant. It's not a great recreational drug, but as a drug to enhance your working ability there is nothing better.

Pointless. Any content that won't look like shit in an interlaced mode will compress very well with any modern algorithm. Much better to display everything progressive and set the data rate as appropriate. Interlace should have died long ago, the only reason it still exists is because it's relatively cheap to build a 1080i CRT and dumb consumers think it's somehow better than 720p.

FFVII was the first Final Fantasy game (and maybe first Japanese RPG, I'm not 100% certain) with an unreliable narrator. This is far more significant than the character development "innovation" (it certainly wasn't the first game to kill a major PC), and the reason why FFVII has had such lasting appeal. What's more, the story was not spoonfed, it's entirely possible to complete the game without seeing information critical for understanding the story. This makes the game confusing enough that the finer points of the story are debated even today, but it is well constructed enough that you can fit everything together to make a convincing and consistent explanation.

Sadly, all replaygain can do is save you from having to reach for the volume control if you're listening to musics with different loudness. Dynamic range compression is destructive editing, once it's gone it's gone. It also occurred to me that maybe this is the reason for people saying vinyl sounds better. Maybe they still use old fashioned mastering for old fashioned media?

  10. Re:What about : increased suckage ==decreased sale on Does File-Sharing Really Hurt the Music Biz? · · Score: 4, Interesting

I don't listen to radio, but one objective example of suckage is the decreased dynamic range of modern mastering techniques. Nearly all music from the last 10 years is so overcompressed as to be unlistenable (and even old music is not safe - "remastered" rerelease versions replace the old versions with much inferior versions).
