You have a problem with the ACLU because you are trying to deny people their liberties, and they are opposed to allowing you to do that.
Their agenda and your agenda obviously conflict. But their agenda concerns the rights of individuals, your agenda concerns getting rid of what you don't like or approve of.
To the rest of us, thank God the ACLU exists, primarily to protect us from people like you.
"I mean your chances of actually getting away from the cops in the USA in a chase are so marginal why do people bother?"
In places like California, with a "three-strikes" law, you have nothing to lose if you are on your third strike. You are going to jail for life anyway, why not run and have a slim chance of getting away? The penalty can't be higher if you do run (except possible injury or death in a wreck), so why not? And you get a chance to be on TV!
"But potential for abuse alone is not a reason for protest."
Yes it is. Because if our government has shown us anything, they have shown us they will abuse a law and use it far outside its originally intended use, time and time again.
"I cut my teeth in 1985, at the age of 5, on an Acorn electron"
First of all, you are too young to remember the early world of home computers. Secondly, because you used an outdated computer in the mid 80's means that it should be acceptable for everyone to have to use one?
"which is why his systems are considered appropriate by the majority of humans on this planet today, just as they were 25 years ago"
25 years ago was 1982. You were too young to remember, but MS products were in no way, shape, or form, used by the majority of people in 1982. How would you know anyway, you were 2.
Either way, how long have you been working for MS? How is Redmond these days?
I always take great pleasure in knowing that the person who bullied me the most has been rotting in Pelican Bay since 6 months after high school, and will be there the rest of his life. Unfortunately, it took the death of another human being to get him there.
I owned one of those Audis, a 1985 5000S. Never had the "sudden acceleration" problem, but I completely understand where it came from. The gas pedal and the brake pedal were so close together that it was very easy to have your foot on both pedals. Also, in a panic situation, I could easily see how people could hit both pedals at once, or the wrong one. Most of the "sudden acceleration" accidents were elderly drivers who have been known to hit the wrong pedal in any car.
Either way, it was a great car. 190,000 miles before the transmission fell out. Not bad for an 80's car.
There was a huge uproar in Southern California recently when a pizza plase started accepting Pesos for payment. Legally, there is nothing stopping them.
My mortgage is about half what I'd pay in rent for an apartment in my area.
Buying/owning a home isn't any more of a rat race than buying a car. Buying more home than you can afford is. Most people buy way more than they can afford.
When I graduated college, they initially refused to give me my diploma because I had a CREDIT on their system of about $10. I had to wait 3 weeks for them to cut me a check for that $10, only then could I collect my actual paper diploma. I guarentee you that they would withhold that diploma/registration etc for a balance due of $1.50.
The California three strikes law only applies to "serious felonies" and "violent felonies." Identity theft and fraud do not fall within those two categories.
Interesting tidbit from this site, Russia has almost twice as many magistrates and judges than the US while the US has 8 times as much crime. Also, while the US is #1 in the total number of crimes, it is #8 in crimes per capita.
Actually, we are number 1 in number of people incarcerated per capita (715 per 100,000) ahead of Russia (584 per 100,000). China is #71 (119 per 100,000).
I am glad incarcerating all these people has given us such a low crime and murder rate. Oh, wait....
When my credit card was stolen online, $600 was charged to a unnamed online vendor. Next to the charge on my statement was a phone number. I called the number, and asked who they were. Don't remember the name, but they were one of those companies that handles memberships for porn sites. I then mentioned that I had an unauthorized charge on my credit card from them. They asked for my name and the last 4 digits of the credit card, found the transaction, and immediately removed the charge. No argument, no pleading, nothing, I just said it was unauthorized and they immediately removed it.
I agree 100%. He is making a victim out of the criminal. Sure, in some cases, the people who steal do need it to buy food, etc. But I don't think that is the majority of cases.
My anecdote: I have had my car broken into or stolen 4 times. Three times the thieves were caught, in all three cases they were upper-middle class teenagers either joyriding, or just plain vandalism. They in no way, shape or form "needed" what they took from me. Hell, in court, I had the mother of one of these thieves try to blame me for creating an "opportunity" for her son to steal.
Your method doesn't provide any detterant to crime at all. Actually, it would encourage crime.
Say, I need $1000 to buy something. I can go earn it, buy the item, be out $1000. I can go counterfeit the $1000, get my item, be out nothing. If I get caught for counterfeiting, it will cost me $1000 in fines.
So why wouldn't you attempt the counterfeiting first if it is going to cost you nothing more than the $1000 you are counterfeiting if you are caught? You might not get caught and be $1000 ahead. If you do get caught, you are out $1000, the same as if you didn't counterfeit. Hell, if a buddy helps you, then you would only have to pay $500 each if you are caught.
I remember getting a Novation AppleCAT after saving up for like a year. It was 1200 baud, half duplex, but faster than a 300. Was the standard for Apple pirate boards back in the day. A little over $300 if I remember correctly, around 1983.
You are calling him a snob? Your entire post is a list of the "eclectic" music you like, and you call him a snob?
Can't you get it through your thick little skull that some people don't listen to radio? Or don't get radio where they live? Or that the only radio they have access to is Clear Channel? Is that so fucking hard?
To go off an insult people because they don't like radio, and insult their musical tastes when you don't even know them make you an asshole.
Wow, they have sold over 100m of the things, but "it's just so fucking retarded to leave out a radio"?
I am so glad circletimessquare is here to educate us on marketing and sales. Selling 100m iPods, and they are retarded. Just think how much better they could have done if they hired morons and idiots instead?
Dude, chill out. If you don't want an iPod, don't buy one. You don't have to freak out and insult people. Obviously a radio is not important to alot of people or they wouldn't have sold so many iPods without one.
I don't want a radio. Why should I? So I can listen to Clear Channel versions 1 through 5?
You know, the L in ACLU stands for "Liberties."

Dude, you are off by at least 10 years. I am 40, and definately a member of the original video game generation.

Believe it or not, I purchased in summer 2000. The appraised value (as of summer 2006) was 4 times what I paid. Indeed, welcome to California.

Guess it happens to them all the time.

"for now I am keeping my money in a sock under my bed and wating on that Apple stock purchase."
Since the day before they announced the iPhone (Jan 8, 2007), Apple stock is up 43.7%. How has the money in your sock performed?
I don't think so, because I have seen literally dozens of clearly readable license plates on Street View.
