The secret of the Japanese language is the Japanese are clairvoyant. The language you "hear" is just a smoke screen. That's why to Westerners it seems they never say what they mean. The best you can hope for is to ascertain if two of them are talking about you and whether it is favorable or not. I mean the translation of the english F--- YOU! is Aho Kokuna. This retranslates as "Don't say foolish things". Now with this state of affairs the non-native Japanese speaker is lucky to learn enough language to get a beer and a pizza in a restuarant that caters to foreigners. "All your base are belong to us...don't say foolish things"

Islamic culture is a continuation of Helenism as was Rome. When Rome fell much of this was lost in the "West". It was continued in the "East" until the fall of Constanstiople in 1452. By then Islam had assimulated Greek knowledge and culture. The "West" had to wait until Spain reconquered Grenada to relearn much of what was lost with the fall of Rome.

I agree HDTV will be successful after a fashion just as the VCR is a success but the cost was all those Betamax users. This should have been handled better. If it were there would be more HD sets in use today. My HD reciever has VGA only for HD out. It does OTA and DirectTV but not QAM.

These things are DOA. The whole HDTV thing is a disaster. Confusing and changing standards are going to piss off the mainstream consumer. It's bad enough the old TV won't work but now the new ones only work sometimes. Jeez!

Early human tool development stayed stagnant for an amazingly long time. Could it be that the same genes that cause autism today also spawned technological innovations like Clovis points. The genes may have been a mutation so rare that until human populations increased sufficiently it would be missing entirely for generations. Perhaps the rise of civilization itself is the result of the genes remaining present in the populations in Sumeria, the Indus Valley, and China which simultaneously (compared to the rest of human history) developed.

The First ammendment is a restriction on Congress. Congress shall make no law... Any of the several States are free to establish the official State Church of the Flying Spaghetti Monster. Applying the "establishment clause" to State and Local governments is the SCOTUS ruling things into it. Should they so choose they can rule that the First Ammendment gives Congress the power to outlaw religion and imprison Christians and there's nothing short of revolution you can do about it...
