Those serial to USB adapters seem to only be good if you want to run a serial mouse.
Overstatement, I think. I use one often to sync my Palm Vx with my desktop via the cradle (9-pin serial).
If you need to do any thing else serial, like the CNC machine, or connect up a console cable... good freakin luck.
I've also used them to connect to the console of a Cisco router, no problem.
I'm not familiar with CNC machines, though. Are you sure the problem is the USB to serial adapters in general, or could it be that you got a cheap one?
after all, what's a NAND gate if not an AND gate with an inverter?
While A NAND B is logically equivalent to NOT (A AND B), that's not true to the implementation. Of multi-input logic gates, NAND requires the fewest transistors to create, so it's often the main building block. In terms of the way the gates are implemented in the transistors, if there is an AND gate, it's usually (always? it's been a while) implemented as a NAND followed by an inverter.
I'm not being technical just to troll. My point is (IMHO) if you're going to say, "actually, here's how things are implemented at a very low level," you shouldn't dumb it down to the point where fleshing it out is quickly misleading.
I've done RMA's w/ Seagate drives. There was an option to have them ship the replacement drive first--you just had to give a credit card number as collateral.
So I get to vote on when a nuke is launched from the U.S.? I thought it was still under the control of a small group of people. I say we use paper ballots if we are going to vote on it.
No! Paper Ballots for elections, yes, but when we vote to launch a Nuke, I say screw the paper. They should issue every citizen in the country a special key which goes with a little electronic box that you mount on your wall. And if more than fifty percent of the country turns their key at the same time, BOOM!
I predict it goes BOOM at 7:00am on the first Monday after the system goes live.
The ones spreading terror and "security" at the expense of our rights;
That's what I thought you meant. (By the way, it was this post of yours that finally got me to add you to my friends list--before I started the 'What is QEFD?' thread.)
and the fact that such brings them absolute power is, I'm sure, only an unintended consequence.
I'm not so sure. In fact I'm pretty sure the opposite is the case. (Perhaps I missed some sarcasm of yours?)
Anyway, now that I know the meaning of QED....I fail to see how AC's comment ("I can only hope you're on the next train to get bombed") proves your point (in the post I linked above). Not that I disagree with said point; I just don't get the connection.
...And just as I was about to post this with only what I said above...it occurs to me that the connection is that AC's comment shows that people are afraid of "the terrorists," which is just what TPTB want...and thus TPTB have power via the people's fear--and it is the power that they hold you rightly fear.
I had never heard of Skyclad before, so I googled and found their website. Interestingly, on their homepage, they say:
All content on this site is copyright by Skyclad. Any illegal copying of text, images and mp3's will be fine with us as that is what the web is all about so please feel free to do so.
If you're willing to lie, cheat, and steal to get those results, you will succeed more quickly than someone who goes about things honestly.
Incidentally, this is why I find anarcho-capitalists/libertarians/etc so amusing. The idea that "the market" will cause corporations and the people who operate them to act in any morally-acceptable fashion is, to say the least, laughable.
I'm curious: what do you suggest as a better alternative to "anarcho-capitalism/libertarianism"?
That said, I don't have that problem except for the occasional webpage that forces a new browser window in a way that adblock, noscript and Firefox can't stop (don't ask, I don't know).
For years I refused to switch from ICQ to IM just because of this abhorrent behavior (that, and how it inserted shortcuts in 10 or 15 different places). Eventually, all my friends migrated to IM and I didn't have much of a choice. To this day, the forced popup windows bug the hell out of me, but I can get around it with 3rd party clients.
Try Gaim. It's an open source client that works on the aim network.
For better or worse, if someone or some company doesn't like GPLv3, what's to stop them from releasing their work under GPLv2? (Assuming the answer is "nothing"...) Doesn't that rob the GPLv3 of much of the power RMS is trying to give it?
I remember when doing speech recognition research, we'd refer to the schwa as the "garbage vowel", the catch-all phoneme for all miscellaneous vocalizations.
I was wondering, is it possible to make a manual (stick shift) hybrid car? I've not heard of such a thing. Is there any talk of it being done? Is there any interest among consumers?
Anyway, I'd still be interested in hearing anyone's thoughts on the matter, now that I know they do exist. I hadn't even heard of such a thing before. Anybody have any experience with one? Differences between it and a regular gas-powered manual transmission?
So long as we're on the subject of hybrid vehicles (be they gas-electric or gas-steam or what have you)...
I was wondering, is it possible to make a manual (stick shift) hybrid car? I've not heard of such a thing. Is there any talk of it being done? Is there any interest among consumers?
I drove automatic for about 6 or 7 years until I got my first manual almost a year and a half ago. Driving is so much more fun and engaging now. I might be interested in getting a hybrid someday, but probably not if I can't get it in stick.
This thread (between you (SamTheButcher) and cloudmaster) has been an interesting read. Thanks to you guys for posting.
SamTheButcher, ulcerative colitis--man, that's rough. I was in the hospital for a week nearly a year and a half ago with colitis, which fortunately turned out not to be ulcerative colitis or Crohn's disease. As best I can figure, it was due to some undercooked chicken I ate several days before my symptoms got bad enough that I went to the ER. (The doctors I asked seemed to agree that that was the most likely cause. I had undercooked chicken and hamburger in one meal. Most everyone I say that to says it must have been the chicken.)
That experience was not fun. (Well, it was kind of nice to get some time off work, but I can think of better ways to spend it.) I'm thankful it's over, however, my once ironclad stomach has not been quite the same since. I often have mild discomfort after eating. I wonder if I might have IBS or somesuch as a result of it all.
I was about to correct you, but fortunately I turned down my threshold before I did, and realized that you were replying to a message with score 0, not to the OP.
About de-animating gifs, I continued reading, and found another post that mentioned image.animation_mode in the Firefox about:config page, and so I had better search terms, and found this page with the details.
I am curious if there is some other method that you use, or if that's it.
I've been wanting to do this for a while, but I haven't figured out an easy way. (I'll admit I haven't scoured the web for the answer, but I have searched a bit.) Anyway, may I ask how you do this? A Firefox option, or something on the about:config page, or an extension would be great...

Am I close?
So I guess I'm not quite following your train of thought. Who do you mean by "internal terrorists"?
I'm not familiar with that acronym. Could you spell it out for me?
(For the record, I did STFW.)

I sure hope some people dig down this far to find your statement, because I'd like to see some discussion on it.

Article here mentions them.
