Those serial to USB adapters seem to only be good if you want to run a serial mouse.
Overstatement, I think. I use one often to sync my Palm Vx with my desktop via the cradle (9-pin serial).
If you need to do any thing else serial, like the CNC machine, or connect up a console cable... good freakin luck.
I've also used them to connect to the console of a Cisco router, no problem.

I'm not familiar with CNC machines, though. Are you sure the problem is the USB to serial adapters in general, or could it be that you got a cheap one?

after all, what's a NAND gate if not an AND gate with an inverter?

While A NAND B is logically equivalent to NOT (A AND B), that's not true to the implementation. Of multi-input logic gates, NAND requires the fewest transistors to create, so it's often the main building block. In terms of the way the gates are implemented in the transistors, if there is an AND gate, it's usually (always? it's been a while) implemented as a NAND followed by an inverter.

I'm not being technical just to troll. My point is (IMHO) if you're going to say, "actually, here's how things are implemented at a very low level," you shouldn't dumb it down to the point where fleshing it out is quickly misleading.

SamTheButcher, ulcerative colitis--man, that's rough. I was in the hospital for a week nearly a year and a half ago with colitis, which fortunately turned out not to be ulcerative colitis or Crohn's disease. As best I can figure, it was due to some undercooked chicken I ate several days before my symptoms got bad enough that I went to the ER. (The doctors I asked seemed to agree that that was the most likely cause. I had undercooked chicken and hamburger in one meal. Most everyone I say that to says it must have been the chicken.)

That experience was not fun. (Well, it was kind of nice to get some time off work, but I can think of better ways to spend it.) I'm thankful it's over, however, my once ironclad stomach has not been quite the same since. I often have mild discomfort after eating. I wonder if I might have IBS or somesuch as a result of it all.
