I could not agree more - the person you are replying to has no idea what they're talking about. Almost *every* company over a certain size I've ever worked for or dealt with as customer or client has the same problem.

In response to your comment, it's worth pointing out that in general, FPS games really haven't progressed much since Quake II. There are the ones that are more massively multiplayer, those that let you perform more roles than just running around shooting, those that have prettier graphics, and those that are more tactically demanding, but none of these things look like they apply to Cube.

I have to agree with the person you're replying to - the most likely reason people aren't playing your FPS is a total oversupply of FPS games on every platform, including Linux.

I still occasionally play them on Linux - mostly Americas Army and Nexius, but there's really no incentive to install yet another only marginally different game, particularly if you don't have convenient packages available.

Please understand that though this is offtopic, I don't mean it as a slam - your game looks great - but if you post such a question in your .sig, then you shouldn't be surprised when people attempt to answer it!

Good luck with Cube - I'm be looking forward to trying it out just as soon as I can apt-get it!

Your statement that "Real progress will be made only after people stop trying to build a human from machine parts and focus more on usefull applications." is just silly. It's not like huge resources are being poured into making humanoid robots. (Nobody is trying to make a 'human from machine parts' - that's a very odd idea, and I suspect gives an insight into your objection to this sort of work.)

I would also suggest to you that there are very few skateboards, bicycles and rollerblades that aren't designed for bipedal use! Just how do you propel yourself when you're cycling, skating or rollerblading?

I mean yeah, you could concievably rig your grow-room up with mylar over the walls, but is it really going to help that much more than the white plastic sheeting used by most of the grow-rooms I've seen?

Are you seriously suggesting that every hiker or camper who buys a space blanket in the US is going to get reported to the DEA? I don't live in the US, but if so, that is so ridiculous, so utterly pointless, so far out of control, that I'm just kind of staggered.

The Great Firewall is there to monitor and control Chinese citizens.

All this hysterical bleating about being dragged off for re-education is just absolute nonsense. The Chinese government most definately is not interested in unnecessarily pissing off Western governments right at the moment (they're even holding the next Olympics there for god's sake).

Now, if you're a Chinese citizen then this is all a very different kettle of fish altogether, but if you're a Westerner, just take along a floppy disk with PuTTY on it, ssh into a friend's box in the US, and tunnel HTTP over the connection. Simple and unmonitorable.

Weren't Java applets designed to do all the things you mentioned?

If applets failed, what reason is there to believe this technology will fare an better?

Because client-side embedded Java applets are a drastically impractical, inconvenient, bloated and slow way to do trivial tasks like this. (NOTE: not a Java troll - it's an awesome language for server-side and standalone client-side apps).

OTOH, ECMAScript/Javascript is built into every browser produced in (at least) the last 5 years, is fast, has zero startup overhead, and is widely understood by every web developer on the planet.

I rarely see Java applets anymore, for the above reasons. I do, however, see many more Flash apps, which have their own set of problems, including that they require yet another set of 3rd-party software to be installed and configured on the client's computer, rendering it undesirable from the point of view of most shopping and ecommerce sites.

This is an elegant solution to something developers have been forced to use ugly workarounds to achieve for years.
