    not so long ago Greenpeace found, in the cooling water of a nuclear reactor in a less than waspish country, so much tritium that had it been separated and sold, the GDP of the said country would have doubled overnight .. or the price of tritium would have falled to the price of good bourbon.

    When GP or WWF or some other of their partners shout "disaster" it is because they want more money. They don't give a f....... for the real issues.

    and what is the difference ? you can say the same about income tax paid by Amazon: I am paying it, they just send it to the revenue departments.

    he probably knows it's not a good idea to write concurent code when it's not absulutely necessary, but the snotty kid thinks the older guy avoids using threads because he does not know how to do it

    young kids have not seen race condition between upgrades to the fancy "new" libraries the want to use, and have not yet realized that understanding the business you write code for is a lot more important that knowing the API to the last internet fad

    thank you, but you did not answer the question: is there any other infectious disease to affect all birds, or all mammals, or even all fish?

    as far as I remember, the last "avian flu" was infecting only the palmipedae

    when was the last time you took a disease from a dog ? a dog is a lot closer to a human than a bird.

    Steam already runs on Ubutu ... no games last time I checked, which was about two month ago

    PlayOnLinux can install a lot of games from GoG, then you have Desura with some indie games, Humble Bundle and quite a lot of small developers that dive deep into Linux and find it good enough. BTW, Android is running on a Linux (the kernel) and there are lots of games there that could be ported to GNU/Linux

    no, it's not always automated and it takes at least 20 minutes wait on the phone with the local MS support ... did that for M.S.Office at work, got enough of it

    Microsoft treats its customers as if they are criminals ... no presumption of innocence

    same story with Windows 7, replace enough of the hardware and having the original disk, the sticker and the bills is not enough :)

    I would still use XP if it supported newer hardware with the original CD ... and if my copy did not decide it was pirated after changing the HDD and adding some RAM

    but big business that can't make use of curiosity based research in the immediate quarter doesn't care

    oh right, Intel and IBM and all the others do not do "curiosity based research" at all ... that was typed on a computer with a processor made in a factory that will become obsolete in 3 years

    can't do applied research without doing fundamental research too ... unless you research a new model of bouncy balls, and even then you might need to find better rubber once in a while

    most of the research is done and paid for by businesses, they just don't advertise so much when they fail
