I just gained 231 EP from my last quest, I mean, project. And I'm 421213 EP away from being promoted to a lvl 39 Developer. Oh and I just put on eBay my Linus Torvalds Keyboard (+50%Coding Speed, -80%Bugs, +100Ego) in case you folks are interested...
Honestly, I don't know how to respond to your iii and iv -- they are as speculative as any psychological analysis. I mean, nobody can really argue in any logical sense against statements like "you are just hearing what you secretly want to hear," can they? 8-)
As for v, please understand that I was not at all arguing that some of the behaviors from the US weren't bad or sometimes downright disgusting. I was merely pointing out one possible factor, without any attempt to deny others, that could have contributed to the world's perception on the US today.
We should accept, with "thunderous applause", President Bush's proposal on using the military in domestic law enforcement roles in the event of a bird flu.
You (the USA) are currently the only global superpower.
Did it ever occur to you that maybe, just maybe, it is that fact above itself that makes everybody else feeling intimidated _and_ growing this intimidated-ness out of proportion, and into some plain and blind hatred?
As far as the Chinese government is concerned, it could care less about the Slashdot audience.
The question is, does the Chinese government ever care about _any_ audience at all?

Well, my friend, in this society, you don't have to point a gun to somebody's head to force him - people achieve that by grabbing a moral highground and just staring at ya.
That would be like arguing that not everyone who has potentially defective silicone-gel breast implants should have them removed - you've got to wait until they burst and you get all sorts of auto-immune diseases, and THEN you can sue for the cost of getting them removed, and your damages. Otherwise, you're not a victim - just a "potential" victim. So no class action for you, baby!
It depends. If we know that the defective implants would burst and cause "a mess", it obviously would be wrong to not have all of them removed beforehand, but the difference here is that whether the implants, once implanted, are going to burst at some point is not under anybody's control, while in the MSDOS case, all the users can be warned not to use the feature and complete avoid data damage from the defect.
Note that we are arguing which users should sensibly fall into the "I am hurt" class, we are _not_ arguing whether MS should offer a free update, to which I completely agree.
In other news, Chief Justice John Doe died today. 40 years ago he started as a busboy responsible for bringing bread and water to the senators who were sequestered during the justice selection process.

The problem is, you can't draw a clear line between a "plain simple" application and a "much more advanced" one (and now throw in "major"), and hence between "what Microsoft doesn't have to offer option for" and "what Microsoft should."
Besides, regardles of the complexity of the applications, it's just not fair to _force_ Microsoft to list particular 3rd party packages in the installation of their _operation system_. I don't see people asking Linux distro builders to include every "major" browsers in their distro. Windows allows a user to uninstall and install things as she likes (except uninstalling IE maybe but at least it doesn't prevent installing other browsers), I think that's as far as Microsoft's responsibility needs to go.
Since when is the US obliged - either morally or legally - to import "your countries most popular exports" unconditionally?

OK, now that Opera is free, why shouldn't Microsoft _also_ offer it as yet another option? What about Lynx? and you can keep going from there - there are probably 769 alternative and free text editors that are all better than notepad, should Microsoft list all of them?
Having been to China, I can tell you that most ppl there dont care either about what sites they can or cant access. A kilometer out of the cities is rural poverty that shocked me even in the light of India or Nepal. These chinese ppl would much rather have clean water, and a sewage system. Maybe hope for rural electricity!
Yeah, right. You have been in China for, what, 2 months? as a tourist? And you think you know about China and Chinese enough to speak for "most ppl there"? what does poverty have to do with the right to access information? Does that there are still lots of poor people in China justify the whole country being censored? Does that some people are poor justify them being censored? Do you realize whether people care about certain rights is totally separate from whether they are entitled to them?

According to the "gone gold" announcement, it'll be shipped on 10/25 in the US, and one week after in Europe.
Wait until you start talking about IMDb on Slashdot. _Now_ we are talking about the ultimate time waste...
shouldn't you start counting from the year IMDb was bought by Amazon, rather than the beginning? ;-)
Frankly I'm confused - if you don't think his statement "conflict, rebut, or otherwise disagree with" you earlier comment, what _was_ your point then?
Well, maybe also my son's, if I had one...
I mean I don't see any laws requiring any client of Sotheby's to obtain any "auctioneer license" before they can put up something for auction...
Clockwork Orange reference. Too bad I don't have mod points today. 8-)

In fact, I actually suspect that we can't even start to argue something is defective without first defining it as "having caused some damage".
