This is only the result of the FCC regulation that will force cable operators like Comcast to allow consumers to purchase, connect, and use other Cable TV Boxes. Short of that decision, this would NOT be happening. It's just a move to shore up their argument, which, by the way, they've already lost.
Pretty much you are right. The insurance companies won't have anything to do with this as this will make their coverage obsolete, or so cheap that they may actually have to do some work for a change.
And the lawyers won't want to go down this path either, as who could they make millions off of with no one to sue?
I'm all for 'robot cars'.. Bring 'em on! If we don't kill 1,000,000 a year, but save 999,000, seems like an easy decision to make...
But trust me, it'll never happen.. 'cause there is no money to be made in this.
As a Mac guy, I agree. Macs can become infected and start sending out spam as well... it just hasn't happened yet and we can sit and argue about why 'til the cows come home, but that's not fixing the problem that Windows has foisted on the world right now.
Like the OP said, my guess is that ALL of those computers are running Windows. So please quite your pontificating about how great the platform is and find a way to keep it from oozing all this spam.
Yeah, you can blame in on stupid users who can't or won't update their OS all you want, but you know what? The Mac base has it's fair share of stupid users as well, but we still don't have the problems you Windows guys do.
Really... Isn't it time that someone hold Redmond accountable for the expense and bother of all this crap?
Because bad or false or misleading data is sometimes what people use to make a decision on. Kind of like the piling on theory.. I was going to vote for Mr. A, but since the polls show Mr. B is winning, I want to vote for the winner!
Weird, sad, tragic, and very underhanded. But don't put it past folks to publish outright lies in an effort to sway the public.
Agreed.
Companies today don't provide a service OR a product. They supply profits. Service and products are just the ugly, messy way of moving money from the bottom to the top of the financial pyramid.
I'm not exactly sure how that's going to work. Apple is NOT giving away the OS for $29.00. By that I mean if you bought this and tried to install it on a new, fresh, empty drive, it is probably not going to work. There will have to be a way to verify that you have a copy of 10.5, and the only way will be if it's already on the drive you are updating.
So starting from "scratch" may not be an option with the $29.00 version.
I've looked at Apple's web store, and can't find the $129.00 version that WOULD allow you to do this, but not doubt one is available, or will be soon.
Somehow I managed to screw eBay. Don't remember the exact sequence of events, but it involved me selling something that the buyer sent back. Long story short, I get a nasty email from eBay about once a week about how I owe them money, and that my account has been 'suspended' due to non-payment. Too bad. I did manage to open a new eBay account, a new PayPayl account for the very, very, very rare times when there is something on eBay that I really want. As with most organizations this size, they are most likely very top heavy with management, and thus there operating expenses are at an all time high. Cut the fat, trim the expenses, bring the salaries down out of the stratosphere, and all these ridiculous fees go down to a reasonable level.
Frankly, the service charges and hidden fees, not to mention the very complex way eBay and PayPal are set up and intertwined, make me avoid the site as much as possible.
Yeah.... that's right... don't compare your software costs with our software costs....
But it's ok to compare the hardware cost of laptops in our new TV ads..
Makes perfect sense!
... Steve Jobs wasn't there.... mostly software announcements.. and the iWorks Cloud Service... no biggie, really.
And this is probably why Apple has decided to pull out of MacWrold... too much pressure to give updates, even if they are not quite ready.
But as usual, you can expect more hardware announcements in the upcoming weeks.
I'm sure Apple decided to leave stuff OUT of the keynote once the rumor mills grab onto something.. just to piss them off...
Nothing.
Both money and time will be wasted on the hearings, but no changes will occur. Network shaping will persist, because the ISP's don't want to spend the money to upgrade their infrastructure.... unless they can get the government to pay for it, and then charge the end users more money for it.
If you can't see the difference, then perhaps the source wasn't really HD, wasn't set up correctly, or you need your eyes checked.
Take a look at type(printed words) in the screen from DVD's and Blu-Ray. The difference is nothing less than astounding. I first saw HD at a NAB convention just about 20 years ago, and can only describe the experience as nothing short of life changing.
There simply is no comparing SD and HD.
Yes, DVD's do look "good" when upscaled to an HD display, but they don't look as good as the same movies in HD on HD display.
I would urge you to check out just about any sporting event in SD and HD.. side by side... in real time. These are generally evenly lit, the crispness and clarity of the image, and the ability to see and read things in the background is simply not possible with SD.
Like you, I buy a lot of music as well. But I am tired of collecting "stuff". I love the fact that music now can't be touched, handled, packed, dropped, broken, dusted, or otherwise take up space.
I've got tons of vinyl, and even more CD's, and I'd trade it all in for the same material from iTunes if I could. Next time you have to pack close to a thousand CD's and several hundred vinyl records for a move.... you may change your mind.
Yes, it does have DRM. yes it doesn't sound "as good" as the original format, yes, the HD can turn on me, yes Apple could go out of business leaving me high and dry, but how often do I listen to the very first song I bought off of iTunes? or the first album? No often. Music, for the most part has become 'disposable'.... yeah... I'll get written up for that comment, and that's not to say I never listen to older material, but by and large, for the most part, I 'tend to listen to stuff that is much more current.
You have valid points all, and I don't disagree with any one of them.. BUT... for those of us who don't want to collect more 'stuff'... iTunes is a good thing.
I think this was tried before.... and the response from Apple was that if the file was downloaded, it was paid for. So, deleting the DRM, while not in Apple's best interest, isn't exactly the same as the WMA subscription problem, where songs that are "rented" could be owned.
Let's face it, if you really want something for free, there are lots of places to get it... I just don't see the point of removing the DRM from a paid for iTunes file, because FairPlay does seem pretty generous with what you are allowed to do with it.
I feel your pain... NOT.
Don't be an idiot! I have 2 desktops and 1 laptop all authorized to play my DRM AAC files... and you know what? EVERY song in my library, all 29.7 days worth is BACKED UP. Regardless of what caused your problem to begin with, if you don't have a back up of your files, it's going to happen again. Do yourself a favor and burn your iTunes files to DVD's, and put them in a safe place.
wellll kinda' sorta' your right...
but on OSX, EVERY user would have to click on Britney.....dmg, and open the file to have any affect. So even if I did open it, and it went to my 200 e-mail addresses, everone on my list would have to do open it for it to have any real effect.
However, on XP, couldn't you EASILY write a script that bypasses the human engineering part and auto execute once it's received and read by the 200 users ?
I don't buy the "Obscurity" arguement. With all the talk about OSX being virus free, I can't think of a BETTER target. Don't forget, script kiddies don't really want to do dmange, they just want the fame. How could you be more famous than to bring OSX down? No one has tried, because I doubt it can be done nearly as easily as on XP.
Everyone keeps forgetting that while Betamax was a looser for Sony on the home front, they managed to make Beta the most widely accepted 1/2" professional format on the face of the earth. All the reseach that went into Betamax was simply upgraded for Beta. So yeah, they may have lost out on millions of consumer units, but they managed to gain close to that back in professional units costing thousands and thousands more.
I'm not a big Sony fan, but Betamax wasn't exactly the looser format as everyone seems to think. The VHS camp developed a 1/2" professional format, and had very limited success. It is now gone, while Beta reigns supreme.
BellSouth Sucks.
With SO MUCH of the infastructure damaged during the storm, and a golden oppurtunity to upgrade to something other then copper twisted pair..... what do they do ? String up copper twised pair..
And the cable company isn't much better... just hang more coax... foget about anything like fiber.
Oh.. and the "wifi network" is only 512k, and only in parts of the city.... like NOT the part I'm in.
And yes, I DO live here.
We have no major news media outlet that is free from the spin masters of the administration.
How can anyone expect an uninformed electorate to actually make an intelligent choice in the voting booth if they are so woefully under informed by those who's mission it is to inform? Forget ABC, CBS, NBC, CNN AND Fox. I will no longer watch ANY news until they learn how to ask the really tough questions and hold our elected officials accountable for their actions.
More War
Bigger Deficits
less health care
more tax breaks for the rich
and the draft is really just around the corner, regardless of what they all said to get elected.
Unless your white, straight, and a christian, your days are numbered in America.
I've never been an "US" in my life... always a "Them", so I'm expecting only the absolute WORSE over the next four years.

... and Apple has depreciated QT for the Mac years ago. Some of the previous functionality of earlier versions of QT is in the latest release.
.... she'd fire herself, and then run for US President.
