    I think you've got that backwards. I can transfer a book across the world in 30 seconds. At the GP's supposed 1y distribution rate in 1790, my copyright would last a grand total of 30s * 28 or 14 minutes.

    If you contend that patents on physical devices are good, and are limited to 22 years, then that's what copyright should be limited to, as written works are cheaper to make and distribute than physical goods.

    Wow, either a really great Troll, or a total fool.

    I've automated Excel and Word with Perl. ANY language on Windows that has a C translation layer can talk to any IDispatch enabled piece of software, which is just about everything Microsoft has ever shipped.

    I started at 100%, and have slowly dwindled down to about 10-15%. I have a Mac Mini, an iPod Touch 3G (which started the love affair), had an iPhone briefly (but AT&T blows chunks). I was a huge hater. Now I'm a voice of moderation.

    If the Droid is the best the mobile handset market has to pit against the iPhone, I'm convinced it'll die as soon as Apple dislodges AT&T from it's bloated teat and opens the phone to other networks.

    I have a Droid because I need tethering over texting accuracy, and I need service reliability over ease-of-smartphone use. The Droid is good, but it's not polished. Not in a way the iPhone is. And 90% of the Market reviews are spam. Android has potential, but I miss the polish of the iPhone I had for a month, but had to give back because of poor reception.

    I was watching a segment stewart did with a Senator, years back, who was writing a book, and Stewart came out and said: "I respect your opinion, but in my opinion, I think you're wrong. "

    Conan or Leno would have made a sound bite of said Senator's point, and moved on. Stewart actually had a decent (respectful) debate about their disagreement.

    The man (Stewart) is underrated, IMHO.

    Counter-argument: if I take care of things well, odds are my DVDs will last 20+ years, and my BluRay just as long. My very first DVDs ever are over 10 years old now, and still play just like I bought them new.

    How long did it take Microsoft to renege on PlaysForSure? 4 years. It is perhaps auspicious that the backlash they faced in light of this decision caused them to change their mind and it continues to this day. But seriously, four years. That is why I rebel against digital-only media. It's nice that iTMS and probably Microsoft give you options to burn to CD, but not yet with Movies (and for good reason - casual distribution would skyrocket).

    You bring up a good point. You have no idea how many times I've been forced to tunnel SSH traffic over HTTP or SSL to get to resources I needed to use to do a job.

    Nevermind the constant influx of vendors and customers, and field people or home workers on VPN.

    Securing a network is tough work.

    Doesn't fwbuilder do some of this for the FOSS world? Why couldn't the Poster take this and improve on it?

    No it doesn't. It means a quad-core, latest ATI video card, and 8GB RAM in a Mac Mini form factor.

    That is NOT the Mac Pro.

    If you mean the Mac BOOK Pro? Then that's the Mac Air.

    The iPad is still a childs toy compared to any of the above.

    Now an Apple Mac convertible tablet, THAT I still want to see.

    Having a Droid, and an iPod Touch, I tell you this, I reach for my iPod Touch whenever I'm on wifi, rather than my Droid, simply because the Droid sucks. I could write pages on why it's a lesser product then the iPhone or even the Pre. I could write more pages on how Palm did the Pre right, and how they didn't do enough with Synergy. The Droid may be open, but it is by no means more advanced than the iPhone. Hell, if the WORST game in the iPhone App Store is anything to go by the iPhone has the Droid beat.

    The laws of conservation of energy would disagree with you. The amount of energy required to decelerate the shuttle is finite, hence the total energy absorbed by the shielding is finite. It's not long-duration temperatures they shields have to withstand - they do that already, being non-ablative - it's the instantaneous heat. They are only rated to certain temperatures. They could take 4 hours to decelerate if the physics of deorbiting allowed it, but get a 6000 degree temperature spike, and poof, no more orbiter.

    But he's got a point. I think Apple has learned an important lesson from the PowerPC experiment.

    I prefer growlers to kegs. No need to have a dispensing system, easy to transport, and easy to give away, and less of a PITA than cleaning 12 or 16oz bottles.

    I have 100's of growlers in storage awaiting my next brewing exercise.

    icanhascheezburger.com for one. snopes.com could probably start one pretty easily. diet websites, sewing websites, auto websites.

    People LOVE forums, they love to talk to share to be heard. We (/. community) are not unique in this regard.

    The difficulty in doing it for a company is interest, keeping it relevant, and getting meaningful content, as well as letting people feel they have a say. That's not true in most places. usually it's top-down mandates.
