Well, I mostly agree, but as someone who codes for a living, the cost of IDEA is more than worth it. I've used them all, and while Eclipse has gotten better, and is now (at least for me) actually *usable*, I find that I can just fly with IDEA.
But this really is a Religious War (tm), and as such there's no Right Answer (pat. pend.)
FWIW, I think the current imacs are pretty icky too [I don't like the whole integrated monitor/system style in the first place, and the current imacs are not all up to Apple's standards of elegance -- they're just sort of thick and clumsy looking].
I originally thought the same thing, but as is often the case with electronics and automobiles, these look much better in real life than in the pictures you see on the web. I am continually amazed by this. If you get a chance, check one out in person.
Same experience here. They're simply amazing. I've ordered things at 1:30 AM Eastern time and had them delivered THE SAME DAY (including a laptop with a memory install). I've also been using them for over 10 years (for everything from parts to computers) , and they've never messed up.

But seriously -- I'm 40, a programmer, and still at it. Java, C/C++, Perl etc. And yes, "fun stuff" too, like LAMP/XHTML/CSS (well, at least to *me* web programming is fun).
I don't quite have the stomach any more for each new Methodology-of-the-Day that happens along, but I'm still very much in the game.
Sounds like Newsweek is actually on top of things for once (oh, and only a year-or-so late). Of course being a/.er, I didn't RTFA.
(and I'm staying out of the Beatles Beatles war!)
Go ahead an make a movie where somebody shits on somebody else's face then ass-fucks them with a gardening trowel while nibbling their jugular vein open, if that's what your "artistic vision" calls for, but don't act all shocked and hurt when a ratings board gives it a grade that suggests suburban mall theaters might not want to show it. Nobody feels bad for you.
Interesting... it came up for me OK in Safari, BUT...I'm on 10.3.9, not 10.4.x so I'm using a different branch of WebKit/WebCore/WebWhatever (Safari version 1.3.1).
how do you computer and IT professionals out there put in your notice of resignation (if you are with a permanent employer, and not contractual), and not get immediately shutdown, and shunned away from the computers?
That's why I've been a consultant for, oh, just about the past 12 years (more or less). Even then, I've tried to be good and give 2-4 weeks notice when I saw things going south, but management never seems to appreciate it, even when you offer to document your work, make yourself available for a brief period after you leave, etc...
Fact is, the moment you resign, you're a pariah. But if you do all the "right things" you can at least leave with a good conscience, and not have anything come back to haunt you.
But Grokster... I could take it or leave it. I've never used it. The only suspicious thing is not being able to distribute their software anymore. There are far more dangerous things that are still allowed to be sold
Edmund Morris wrote a biography about Ronald Reagan in which he (Morris) interjected himself into history, appearing as an active participant in Reagan's life at various "important" times in Reagan's career. He then tried to fob this fantabulous concoction off onto the public as legitimate history.
Despite his (apparently) eminent status as a historian, the people "spoke", the book flopped, and even the lit crit world and his publisher became shy about the whole thing.
Sadly he's not the only one to have gotten away with it. Where are those meddling kids when you need them? http://slate.msn.com/id/1007896/
I've been following good old "blowhard" Dvorak since the eighties, and this is one of those times when he (thankfully) gets it right!
I've been using Photoshop for years, and I'm *still* not used to it. I'm also a photographer (for fun and for part-time $$$ doing greeting cards and such).
It's visual, it's point and click, and it works wonders. Nine times out of ten it "gets it right" and does a better job than I could have playing with levels, curves, etc. and I spent a looooooong time learning how to understand and use those features.
There's also an INCREDIBLE Velvia/Provia Photoshop action over at atncentral.com, which takes me back to the good old days of over-saturated-green nature photography (I always do nature shoots with Velvia unless lots of browns are involved).
There are a couple of other useful filter packs out there (I've used just about EVERY SINGLE photo filter made), but if you could only get just one, I recommend Intellihance Pro.

It's a matter of style. Back in the day, Sony made some great looking Clies, which somehow transmogrified into bizzare TransformerBot-like devices.
Most iPaqs and Dells and whatnot are about as sexy as a pair of fat-ass Docker chinos, which is usually what they're tethered to by way of an obscenely mooky clip-on case.
The last several years' worth of Palm's have been absolutely uninspired, and yes, even in person. The LifeDrive comes close, but...well...we all know that "close" doesn't convert into market share.
I, for one, would welcome our new sexy PDA overlords, if only they would come!
Dvorak had a writeup about that a while back. He entered the word slaves in google and back came an ebay add offering up a fine selection of slaves...for AUCTION no less!
Cut my teeth on those things! Best.Keyboard.Evar. (Don't tell anyone, I even still have an IBM Selectric II typewriter. I LOVE THAT THING)
Unfortunately, the mushy excuse for an input device I'm using right now is integrated directly into my PowerBook. I remember a while back (i.e., 7 years ago) someone showed how to modify a resistor or something in the Model M to make it work with some new-at-the-time finicky motherboards (Asus, I believe?) but that was still via a KBD to PS/2 mini adapter.
*runs off to see if anyone's made a USB conversion kit for the model m that'll work with an Apple PowerBook*

100% agreed.
Oh. Grokster.
never mind.

An absolutely essential add-on is Extensis (now One on One) Intellihance pro: http://www.ononesoftware.com/detail.php?prodLine_

In response to all of the above posts, I found one! These guys

have gen-u-ine original model Ms, as well as a special sort of USB adapter (to address the power draw issues/etc.) that even works with Macs!
Looks like I'm gonna have to get me one.

I'd mod you up if I could. And you owe me a coke and a keyboard.
What about fusemail?
This is exactly the kind of service they offer.
Anyone have experience with them?
Actually, yes. It says so right on their page! So it *must* be true!
And you can switch between the two OSes using Voice Command (tm) (pat. pend.) (rx)
You see...
In Soviet Russia, laptop tops you!
Well, I was gonna mod you up, but I'd rather post instead.
Toss in Ruby, and we can have a four-way!!!
