You may get flamed for your comment but I, for one, agree with you. Some of the comments on this forum seem to assume that it's a God-given right to (as you so aptly put it) "leech other people's copyrighted material off of dodgy peer to peer networks!" I run WinXP because Linux doesn't support the apps that I need to make a living. I have no problems with spyware, malware, trojans, etc. ad nauseum largely because I use Firefox and Thunderbird, run a hardware firewall, and I avoid trying to get something for nothing. You can't cheat an honest man.

I predict that Windows users will continue to not update or perform even the most basic maintenance on their machines leading to an increase of bitching about Windows. The North Polar cap plays an important part in moderating our climate due the fact that the ice reflects considerable solar energy back into space. If the cap does substantially disappear one effect will be an increased rate of atmospheic warming. This in turn may lead to the melting of the South Polar cap. Although it's impossible to accurately calculate the possible rise in ocean levels I've read estimates of a rise as high as 369 feet. Are you 369 feet above sea level?

Back in 2000 I worked for a company named Winfire - anyone remember Winfire? Anyhow, Winfire's product was ad-supported free DSL. Essentially we were a reseller of SBC DSL and we made our money from the ads that our users had to view through our front end. Fair enough: you received free DSL, we recouped the costs and a bit more from our advertisers. The problem was SBC: a byzantine 23-step provisioning process (And if a user got "lost" at any step it was up to us to catch it and start them back - at step 1, naturally) to sudden and mysterious changes in DSLAM settings which left our users with no connection. SBC did a thousand crappy little things to make certain that our users were dissatisfied. Winfire went belly-up in early 2001. Maybe we deserved it, but I can not help but think that SBC did a great job of greasing the skids for us and for anyone else who chose to act as a reseller under the terms of the Telecommunications Act.

  8. Maybe on ABC's 'People of the Year' - Bloggers · · Score: 0

Maybe the reason that bloggers are considered to be influential is because they are now doing the job (Some very well and some very badly) that used to be done by the Main Stream Media. The media has largely stopped serious reporting. More and more newspapers, radio and television stations are being gathered into fewer and fewer hands. The result is an almost complete lack of questioning anyone's Talking Points - much less the assumptions underlying them. If bloggers are more influential it's because the media is less so.

In a hastily called press conference U.S. President George W. Bush, today announced a "nationwide mobilization of America's scientific and commercial resources" to create renewable and sustainable replacements for fossil fuels. When asked how the deficit-ridden government would pay for such an effort Bush replied that America's military would be rapidly drawn down to the level necessary to preserve the territorial integrity of the United States. "After all," joked the President, "we already have all of the food we need, once we have all of the energy we need there won't be anything to fight over." -And then I awoke.

The military is about control. I was born on a Navy base, grew up on Navy bases and did a four year hitch in Navair so I have a small insight into the mentality of that one service. The military does not like contrarians and Linux has positioned itself as contrarian. MS, on the other hand, has done all of the hard work necessary to get itself into the procurement system. It does not matter what's "better," it does matter that MS is in. It has the capital and the resources to provide what the military thinks it wants. Again; what's "better" doesn't enter into it. As for some terrorist(s) somewhere, someplace, pulling off a coup that would hobble the military, that's very wishful thinking; remember that folks will usually figure out a way to do damage.

Lately, the only reason the fed prevents the states from regulating something is so that the fed can do it. IMO, the only reason the FCC drew a regulatory shield around VOIP was to keep the regulatory and taxation powers (Not to mention the ability to monitor)for the fed. With the deficit running around half a trillion USD and the current administration's penchant for expensive cannon-fire diplomacy you can bet that taxing VOIP and possibly Internet use is a certainty. I'd bet a compliant Congress will "Get 'er done" in the interest of Fighting Global Terrorism before the Summer Recess.
