  2. AMD should subsidize a switch on AMD Hits Milestone in Server Market · · Score: 2, Interesting

I lease an Intel based server right now because back when I first signed up for it, that's all that was offered. Now the datacenter offers AMD based machines and I would love to switch. However, the company will charge me the setup fee on the AMD server and I will have to move everything over myself. It's not a steap fee, but it is enough for me to just stick with what I have. Switching isn't necessary by any means, just something I'd like to do. At any rate, I'd bet there are a lot of other people out there like me. If AMD would subsidize the costs for the datacenters to switch (pay them $20 per user that switches from the Intel machine to AMD) or whatever amount is fair, they could claim a bigger portion of the market.

Maybe it isn't feasible... just my $0.02.

Not only that, but how many people downloaded it because they heard the buzz, installed it, and went right back to internet explorer because it was more familiar and comfortable to them? You're right that the download number isn't as relevant--actual usage numbers would be much better but even the best estimate would have too much error I'd guess.

As remedial as it sounds, I am still under the impression that a lot of users out there couldn't install firefox if they wanted to. I don't think they'd know why they need to do it, and then how to get the app and install it. I know it sounds ridiculous, but I really think that's the case. I used to volunteer at a public library in the computer department. Granted, most of those people's computer experience came only from going to the library and using their computers, but it was amazing how little they knew.

Also, if you ever want to see how the public understands computers, just go to a Best Buy and spend 5 minutes in the computer department listening to people ask questions. I think you'll realize that something as simple as acquiring a new browser and then installing it is almost an insurmountable task for quite a few people out there.

I couldn't disagree more. The slashdot crowd would switch browsers, but what about the older folks that have a tough time just setting up a Yahoo email account? I would wager more people on the web are on that side of the fence than on the side we're on. You and I know quite a bit about browsers, but let's not forget about the other 95% of users out there.

Chargebacks are often a bad idea. When it is your word against theirs and the credit card company honors your word (its usually in their best interests to do so), often times the company will just turn you over to collections. That is horrible for personal credit, so sadly, you're often better off just paying the fees. Now, I can imagine if this were more than $100 or so, you'd have a problem on your hands. However, if it is one or two calls, you're likely put in a position where a chargeback isn't the answer.

Even though the processors are unchanged (I think), I would have liked to have seen an upgrade on the hard drive RPM's. They're a sweet little system and that would have been a great addition.

The thing is though, I can't see how people would buy one now with this pending switch to Intel. I was going to buy a mini for my parents about a week before the switch and there weren't any in stock. Now with the news of the intel switch, I can't bring myself to get one. It will be very interesting to see what happens as the date draws nearer to the release of the intel mini's, since we could probably suspect a big sell off of PowerPC models. Just my $0.02.

It was nice because I unpacked all of my things and was on the net that night courtesy of my sharing neighbors, while I waited for the cable guy to come the following afternoon.

So what I don't get is, why don't wireless companies just ship their routers pre-setup with encryption. Then, they could just include the key much like software ships with a license number you enter when you install it. If people can handle software installation, this really doesn't seem to be any different. The router companies could even offer a more marketable interface to make it look much like it does when you enter a CD Key from software so people don't even realize what they're doing. Seems like a really easy fix to me.
