I don't think it's just a matter of "logging in." The third party could have opened up the machine, allowing for other kinds of tampering, both hardware and software. A lot of products void the warranty if you open them up because at that point you can't guarantee the quality of the product since it could be tampered with.

The picture you paint would not be the same if: 3rd party gets called in to inspect machines. 3rd party opens machines. 3rd party modifies machines to skew votes. Diebold gets blamed for inaccuracy or votes are skewed. Who verified what the 3rd party was doing? Did anyone document the tests? Did anyone supervise the tests? A 3rd party can have a hidden agenda and use such a situation to their advantage. Diebold is correct here. They cannot guarantee their machine after someone has opened it up and could have modified things.

In this particular case, it wouldn't matter. For all Diebold knows, even if they had the hardwired circuit you recommend, the third party could have completely removed it and put in one of their own. Basically there was no supervision/documentation of the testing and anything could have been changed. Diebold should not be held responsible for that, and are right to no longer guarantee accuracy.

I agree completely. They've just been making good (and recently very sleek-looking) products. When I first realized I couldn't get the Motorola Razr since I am on Sprint, I was disappointed and figured I would have to settle for the Samsung version: the A900 "Blade". Turns out I couldn't be happier. When comparing with the features of the Razr, the Samsung phone excels all over the place. They let you customize everything, have sweet graphics, a cool rotating camera, and a much better resolution ( 176x220 for Razr vs 240x320 for Blade). And their plasma TVs look amazing. So go ahead and label me a Samsung fanboy as well :)

I don't think the general (average person's) view of I.T. is what you're making it out to be. You could start arguing that software developer is too broad a term and lumps a bunch of people together. Or even Opera Mini.

Opera Mini(TM) is a fast and easy alternative to Opera's mobile browser, allowing users to access the Web on mobile phones that would normally be incapable of running a Web browser. This includes the vast majority of today's WAP-enabled phones.

Instead of requiring the phone to process Web pages, it uses a remote server to pre-process the page before sending it to the phone. This makes Opera Mini(TM) perfect for phones with very low resources, or low bandwidth connections.

Opera Mini(TM) offers the same speed and usability as the renowned Opera mobile browser, and uses Opera's Small Screen Rendering(TM) technology to provide access to the Web. It has all the features expected of a browser, and more, such as bookmarks, browsing history, and ability to split large pages into smaller sections for faster browsing.

"Whenever close work is done without the protection of reading glasses, it is important to:

    1. Hold the work as far away as possible.
    2. Use as much light as possible in order to reduce the size of the pupil and, consequently, the accommodation.
    3. Look into the distance frequently to relax the accommodation."

  23. Re:A crutch? on Coming Soon, Super Vision · · Score: 5, Interesting

    From here:

"Usually, eye doctors will prescribe distance glasses for correcting blurred distance vision. Unfortunately, distance glasses actually make nearsightedness worse and irreversible. This is because they force the focusing muscles to stay locked up. This in turn forces the eyes to further elongate, resulting in the need for stronger distance glasses as time goes by. The child is thus doomed to a lifetime of total reliance on distance glasses to see distant objects clearly and progressively worsening nearsightedness. Distance glasses are a false friend.

There is an alternative - reading glasses. If a child starts wearing reading glasses for prolonged periods of reading and other close work at the first sign of any difficulty with distance vision, the focusing muscles will relax and cannot lock up. Reading glasses relax the eyes. There should be no further elongation of the eye. Distant objects can be seen without the need for any glasses. It is important to note that the child will not be reliant on reading glasses. They are simply a protective tool that should be used during long periods of close work. If strong enough reading glasses are used, nearsightedness should be prevented."
