Wasn't it Blockbuster who ran the mom and pop video rental stores out of business with their corporate muscle?

Speaking of Mom and Pop video stores, when my favorite local video store was steamrolled out of business by Blockbuster, he fired back (literally) by using half of his store to manufacture illegal fireworks! Every year near the end of June, the video store was packed with customers, until one day a manufacturing accident created a big explosion and a big fire. My brother was nearby when it went down, and said there were rockets flying through the streets, and saw the owner get carried out on a stretcher with lots of charred skin! He eventually recovered, and still makes the fireworks but in a different location.

Sadly this guy had one of the biggest collections of NES and SNES games I've ever seen, as well as a massive collection of 80s and 90s VHS pr0n that I never got to see (but always peeked behind the curtain to get a glimpse of the box covers); all was destroyed in the fire.

Let me tell you the story of my famous drill. When I was a teenager, my father and I were hiking in the woods and came across an old pile of garbage that someone had dumped. It looked like it had been sitting there for at least five years, and had obviously been through many seasons with plenty of rain and snow. We took it home with us and decided to clean it up. We disassembled it, gave it a brief cleaning, lubed it, and replaced the power cord because the existing cord was frayed and the insulation was dryrotted. We plugged it in and to our surprise it worked! It's from the early 50s, and is a perfect example of quality craftsmanship, when things were designed to last decades.

My wife has friends who are also stay-at-home moms who literally live on Facebook (8+ hours a day) and behave as if they have important social lives when in reality they don't have any real interaction with other people. It's sad. My wife closed her account a while back and doesn't use facebook anymore, and now we rarely hear from those facebook-addicted friends. We're out of their online social circle, so it's almost like we don't exist to them.

Meanwhile we meet and socialize with our non-facebook-addicted friends and have much more interesting conversations, along with real face-to-face interaction which results in much more fulfilling relationships with these friends.

I never had a problem with the courses that were project-based; I aced the two graduate level EE design courses I took, as a direct result of coming up with an interesting project idea, implementing it, and delivering a detailed summary. The funny thing is those courses are most directly related to all the real-world work I've done, and they had the most impact on preparing me to be a real engineer (not just a code monkey).

Perhaps a developer could design a flash page specifically for a mobile device, but in that case a non-flash mobile optimized webpage/site would be much better.
