HA healthcare in many developed countries has been an immense success, when compared to the rest of the developed countries we are the only people who dont provide free healthcare for the poor. P.S an immense success meaning it was able to do what it set out to do without spending as much as the U.S does on healthcare.

Dude about the population increase, once a country becomes developed and reaches a certain population, the population increase becomes near zero, (ex. germany, US etc.) for example in the US the ratio of birth to deaths leveled off and only fluctuates around by +-2% around 0. So all I am saying is given enough time the diseases will (future) not have much effects on the death rate.

while its true that immigration is used as a scape goat (ex. bush's 'controversial' immigration plan came out in the middle of his problems), it is also not resolved because of another thing; cheap labor, through out the south west the illegal immigrants from mexico provide cheap labor for many companys (some of the big companys even ex. walmart) and IMHO this is another reason why illegal immigrant laws/enforcement problems are not fixed.

But if there's a large number of people wanting it, chances are a commercial development wouldn't cease either. What counts is when a small number of users want something to continue development, and in that case, I'm not convinced OSS has yet demonstrated any compelling advantage over CSS.

ah but thats the thing the cutoff requirement for 'large number' is different from project to project in OSS, some project the entire user population is the single dev. But in CSS it has to be financially feasable to develope the certain software.
alright I suppose it would a new dev about 2-3 years to get acclamated to a large project without any docs, without any devs to teach the new guy the ins and outs, I doubt that both would happen. Because if its a company backed OSS project they will usually require some good docs for the future devs (if they have an ounce of common sense). If its not then the former devs usually hang around atleast until the new guy is accustmed to the code.

The reason for so little unsuccessful forks is the same reason for the shut down: need. There simply wasnt any need for that particular software. If a software is needed by a large number of people then it will get forked succesfully and will grow.

I am not saying that OSS is a magic bullet for future proofing, all I am saying is that OSS and open standards are a huge part of future proofing for a company.

Your entire argument assumes that people cant become familiar with a large piece of code if they didnt develope it. I have to say that isnt true. If the person is a decent coder s/he can learn a large project such as OOo within a year, give or take depending on previous involvement.
Support for those things dont exist because the need doesnt exist, if a person had a problem they would just go on IRC and ask and would get a prompt answer or just ask on the mailing list. The need for more docs arrives when end users are involved (your average mom and pop).

yeah I am gonna call bull to most of that, That's really not true, you know. If Sun stopped supporting Star/OpenOffice, or the guys at MySQL gave up and went home, I'd give you great odds that it would pretty much kill future development of the corresponding product as well, open source or not. You might get the occasional bug fix or minor patch, but that's probably it. ok lets take examples from history where the company stopped making the software: Netscape, AOL stopped netscape dev and handed it off to mofo now what has happend there? a robust and full growth. Basically you are arguing against the strenght of OSS, forking; even if Sun stops making OOo tommorow guess what you are gonna have the community come forward and take over. Now your comments about docs, the docs are created in a OSS project if the user needs'em for example take a look at great enduser OSS: ubuntu, firefox, etc. they all have greate docs.

You have two fronts to look into first is the box: Even though there are readymade boxes that you can buy to recieve the feeds, I would say that you should look into buying a DVB card and puting together a dedicated comp for this. Now about the computer software: You have choice of going complex or simple, if you want to go simple just pick a distro of your choice and use vlan, however Mythtv has just started adding DVB support, I would say that you should look into that for a full fledged media center PC. Now Hardware: you have to decide whether to get a Hardware (expensive) driven card or a cheaper card that leaves the decoding to the CPU, obviously if you have a card that does the decoding you dont need a teribly fast cpu.

now for the dish, obviously as you know the bigger the better, with the bigger dishes you have the ability to recieve both C & ku band. Now attempting to recieve both into one dish is ok as long as you get a feedhorn. I could go into details but this site shows a lot more

Now as far as channels go nothing beats lyngsat. they have crazy ass searches for example all the free satelite channels in the US.

So lets see question was asked about open source software you went ahead and compared many closed source softwares. In this post 1947 world of ours we have whats called freedom, where we develop openoffice and dont have to be locked in to vendor standards. Thats the main reason I recomend open source software, they generally tend to be open standards as well which means everyone can use their choice of software, if the next open source office comes out, guess what they will be able to open all of OOo files with zero dificulty, instead of devs spending half their time hacking the files. Thats another difference, most open source communities listen to their users more than MSFT or any other closed source project.
