The only thing I mind them finding is them finding out that I'm much more interested in software engineering when I'm applying for junior sysadmin jobs. Them knowing that is a sure way for me to never get called for an interview.
That's a mighty shame. At a previous employer, I built the entire IT team out of individuals with a software engineering background, and we sought to only hire junior system administrators that had a strong personal interest in software development.
It was harder to find hires, but the advantages were tremendous. Everything was automated, any critical bugs we found, we could fix ourselves, and any features we needed, we implemented. We could work directly *on* the products, and did.
Everything ran so well, with such a small team and so little capital expenditure -- I wouldn't even consider hiring standard system administrators again.
100% agreement. The only sysadmins who know what they are doing are the ones who are also programmers, my favorite are the ones with kernel internals experience because they have a great gut instinct for how systems work. They can usually intuit the solution to a problem where a sysadmin-who-cant-even-code may spend weeks trying to diagnose it because he just lacks the right mental paradigm to figure out the problem, much less come up with a robust solution.
VLC/mplayer/etc can play most flash video and youtube is moving to h264 for most of their new stuff, in fact if you google around you can find a hundred different ways to extract the video from google in either.flv or.mp4 format.
Games, on the other hand, probably a lot more difficult to handle in a purely open source environment.
I delved back into my Slashdot experiences for this purpose and used the old sysop trick for catching spammers: set up a honeypot. I created a YouTube account and uploaded certain videos which seemed to have a good chance of getting taken down for specious reasons. Sure enough, one of them was. Within thirty minutes, I filed a counter-claim.
I don't understand, how does this help with the other 4,000 DMCA takedowns?
So you counter-claimed a single bogus takedown notice, but what does that gain you? With a traditional honeypot you've tricked the opponent into revealing themselves in such a way that you can avoid them them in the future. But in this case we already know who is issuing the takedowns and there is nothing you can do to avoid them - its not like youtube has a filter to block viewing by certain IP address ranges or anything.
If you pirate the game, they will know people want the game enough to jump through hoops for it.
There is no "neilsen ratings" for piracy. The best they can do is to look at a bittorrent swarm on a continuous basis, but that doesn't come anywhere near to telling the whole story of just how much "darknet" demand there is.
So in short your premise is flawed, the best a company can do is realize that some number of people are willing to "jump through hoops" to pirate the game. But just how many, they will never know, not even to within an order of magnitude.
On the other hand, they do have pretty accurate numbers for the amount of legitimate sales. Those people are doing far, far worse damage to 'the cause' because they are telling the company that not only are they willing to jump through the hoops of living with DRM, they are also willing to PAY for the privilege.
I simply was trying to make a point that the suggestion of $0.10 was just as unreasonable to distributors as $14.99 is to consumers.
Well distributors really shouldn't have much say in it because they are competing with free. Distribution on the internet with bittorrent is free after some base fixed cost.
So, take that 10 cents, make 9.99 cents for the creators and 1/100 of a cent for distribution and then sell it to 50 million people. That's almost 5 million dollars which is what it costs for an episode of a top budget tv show. A typical sitcom is under $500K and anime, with english dubbing, is down in under-$200K/episode range.
So, with a world-wide market of over a billion possible customers, 10 cents an episode is completely reasonable.
They probably had a 9-month contract to keep him around and now the 9 months are up. It is extremely common for the previous owner/ceo to bail out in a year or so after their company is acquired.
I don't remember which article I read it in, but it was the first one that I read about the wooten guy or I would have linked it originally. Here is one article at the WSJ that says it too:
Obama built a campaign machine from scratch that defeated the Clintons and the Democratic Party's establishment over eighteen months. That's an accomplishment in itself that qualifies him.
Nah, more like his campaign manager. Maybe Obama should have picked him (or her?) for VP.
I came to the realization that far from a "hail Mary," I think this is a perfectly calculated and awesomely executed political strategy.
I don't want to under-estimate Obama's ability to deliver a speech, but between his less-than-awesome performance in unscripted debates with Hillary and at Saddlback and with the hatching of this political strategy with Palin, I really do think there's a high possibility that Obama is toast.
I'm not sure if you actually explained WHY you think Palin makes Obama toast. Is it because you think Obama can't hold his own in an improvisational speech? Is Palin some sort of super toastmaster (no pun intended) who can take advantage of that weakness? I must be missing something here since you got modded to at least 4-insightful, I'm not seeing what it is you base your opinion on.
He was suspended for using a stun-gun on his 10-year-old stepson,
Which the kid REQUESTED, and not in a sarcastic smart-mouthing either. They teach these people that tasers are harmless. The kid wants to see what it feels like, ain't nothing wrong with letting him find out if you believe the taser is harmless.
Just a little something I read about the government not being allowed to outlaw or advance any particular religion.
That's not what the Constitution says.
What the constitution (or rather the 1st amendment) says is" "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof;" which is pretty much a straightforward translation of "not being allowed to outlaw or advance any particular religion."
What "Biblical literalists" would that be? I don't think that means what you think it means.
He clearly means geocentric model, not heliocentric.
Considering filling the container with an inert gas like nitrogen in order to reduce any wear and tear caused by corrosion. Just make sure that whatever inert gas you pick, unless it is helium or neon, is really inert with respect to the contents of your time capsule.
This has been going on for months, despite press coverage. I'm beginning to wonder if Google is deliberately promoting tools to kill Craigslist.
If I were Craigslist, I would rather see those tools easily available instead of pushed underground. Because it makes it easier to identify them and thus to create countermeasures.
For example, instead of just shutting down the exploits and their distrubtion, I would study the tools and see if they have a recognizable 'fingerprint' when used. Then I would make the craigslist software look for such 'fingerprints' and treat the postings differently - for example instead of just blocking the post, I would set the threshold for other user's tagging it as spam to be very low, or even set a timer to delete the post after an hour or two.
The end result being that the most common and easily available tools would be compromised in non-obvious ways, reducing the rate of escalation in the "arms race" of cracker/anti-cracker tools and simultaneously making abuse less effective for most (ab)users.
My perception was movie-dimensionalization operated in a similar fashion to movie-colorization 15 years ago with both computer and artistic components.
He was genuine.... Things like this show me that when people bash someone relentlessly, they often don't know WTF they are talking about. I place you in that group.
Are you seriously trying to argue that because someone is charismatic and gets along well with people in person that they must be "good people" and incapable of doing harm to a country?
Do you realize that you've just described every despot who has ever ruled? For example, Stalin, Hitler (uh-oh), Mussolini, Mugabe, Marcos, even Sadam - all were or are very charismatic and friendly to the people around them. Just not so friendly to some people whom never got near them.
The Bushes may or may not have been terrible presidents, but charisma and an easy-going nature have nothing to do with their policies and executive decisions.
In past years, these systems have had the dual effects of making a lot of culture inaccessible to many people, and of giving non-creative (but wealthy) people excessive control over the creative output of artists.
That's no different from the current system. In fact, when I first read that sentence I thought you were referring to the current system.
No one seems to care if loans go into default for completely avoidable reasons.
Listen to this if you want to understand what's going on with mortgage lenders.
In short, the companies that hold the mortgages don't hold the entire mortgage. Thousands of mortgages are bundled into a CDO and then companies buy shares of the CDO. Thus there is effectively no one who both (a) cares about the status of the loan and (b) has the authority to take any action to fix problems. There are plenty of people who are either (a) or (b) but just about nobody who is both (a) and (b).
I've had a lot more luck with binary drivers with my ATI card than with any shitty open source driver.
Well, obviously your problem is that you are using shitty drivers. Start using good drivers and you'll be much happier.
I got really pissed off after spending $600+ for nvidia video cards only to find that the shitty nvidia binary driver ignored its own config file and assumed my LCD monitor was analog RGB.
I don't have time to dig up a cite, but he sure seems to expect to make money in the long run.
