Who needs touch screens to insert text in a command line? (70's and 80's way)
Unless the UI is appealing and useful, they don't add any value, that's why they are becoming popular now.
If the base components of all distros, openoffice, gcc, etc, can attend this common release cycle, the savings related to the combined testing time can be allocated to improve new features that will improve each distro uniqueness.
The differentiation should be in new capabilities and reliability, and not in who has the new software version of that package.
Use this opportunity to improve the things that are not common between distros!
One fork because of a resize think seems ridiculous... In the other hand, this is not the first time the user base complains about features. I remember the famous request for webcam and audio support that never was attended, and they claim it will never be...
I hope this is only to mark a position and enhance discussion, and that both projects can merge again, like compiz and beryl did. I think projects are stronger when united.
Today the cost of gasoline in the gas station I use was something like 8.4$/gallon (after converting litres to gallons and euros to dolars )...
If there was a way to make $2/gallon gas it would be already on the market.
I see Pre-kindergarten as only a portion off the children's education... And you imply that is bad. I don't think that all pre-kindergarten is bad. Like all things, there are a lot of grey between the extremes.
You are right IF one can afford to quit the job.
Unfortunately that is not the case with the majority of people.
I live in a country where it is normal for both parents to work, and children grow ok, its not the end of the world. The birth rate is already very low now... Without pre-kindergarten you can bet that in 50 years my country would have a low fraction of today's population. That is not acceptable.
The reality in the US is different, but initiatives like this are important to improve opportunities among the poor people and increase social mobility.
Its not the end of the world to put the kid on pre-kindergarten, in fact, the kids I know that go there are more sociable and active than the ones who don't... And they don't seem to me under loved.
It is worst to keep them in the house seeing TV all day.
When both parents work, where do you put the kid?
Women can have a day job and most certainly have the same rights of men...you know... they don't exist only to have kids and rise them.
Pre-kindergarten education is very important to rise birth rate among the active population.
Hello, even if not recommended for, a main machine (at home), I've installed 8.04 beta. I cleaned the system partition (/home is safe elsewhere) and made a fresh reinstall. My current installation has several upgrades on it and I want a good LTS, free of old stuff.
My first impressions...
The theme is almost the same, the menus are the same, but there are some theme inconsistency between windows...some processes lunched by root get a different theme. Emerald not working.
the new applications rock, lots of changed applications, upgrades and beta software... As an LTS I think the developers chose soft that may be maintained longer, even if it is still in beta.
By the way, Firefox 3B4 integration with gnome is fantastic.
Only a thing that is not so good. If you have multiple accounts in the computer, the installer won't scan/home for users, so you will have to add them manually... The problem is that the GUI to add/change groups don't let you assign a new user to an existing/home/stuff dir. Also, nautilus (running as root) is broken when you try to change the ownership of something.
All hardware running well, no strange things happening. Yet.
Congratulations and many thanks to the ubuntu dev team.
The majority of linux users are power users or IT professionals that have other things to do. (/enable_realism) Games are a waste of time and, IMHO, neither a form of art, yet. (back_to/.)
In practice, only because it's hard to find a computer with a RS232 COM port, or because it's old, doesn't mean it is obsolete...
My last two jobs, at some point, I used this port.
If you work with "data terminals/pic programing/automotive industry/uncommon devices" it is certain you will work with one of these.
Lotus Symphony is based on the 1.1.4 version of OpenOffice.org which was dual licensed under both the LGPL as well as Sun's own SISSL which allowed for entities to change the code without releasing their changes, IBM does not have to release the source code of Symphony.
They should be contributing to the OpenOffice code instead of creating another pointless "productivity" suit.
but RPM is the standard, not APT/DEB
If you take a look at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Linux_comparison you will find more distributions using APT/DEB than RPM/YUM.
Moreover, if you go outside, you will see that Ubuntu is the most popular distribution these days, and they use APT.
But the most important is not if he existed, is his message.
And, as I told before, I'm not a religious person, but the Jesus figure is of the upmost importance in history.
This light thing is some other form of penis size competition.
Every year, Christmas is more about business and show off and less about its origins.
Disclaimer: I'm not a religious person but I think you don't need to believe in God to admire Jesus work at that time. If he was in our time he would certainly be against the war in Iraq. He was a pacifist, unlike most of his hard line followers.
Curious... This is the first time I read something about this browser.
The Portuguese version of wikipedia says http://pt.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maxthon this browser is often used to circumvent the great Chinese firewall, hence its popularity. Does anyone know why it is especially easy to do tuneling with it?
I don't have a TV... well... I have a TV card in the desktop. I move between the pufs, chairs and sofa with my wireless stuff to control the PC (yes, it is in the leaving room). It's indispensable.
As said in another post, wired keyboards emit some radiation that can be piked up... More over, any ethernet or phone cable with bad shielding does the same.
If anyone wants to get paranoid there are a lot of reasons everywhere.
Even if we don't like him, he is correct about the android vaporware. It is getting very common to do a lot of noise about a product/platform without releasing something solid.
I wish the best luck to android, but to get developers attention it needs to deliver something, not just a website with a lot of abstract intentions about java (what version of java?) or SDKs (how?, in what IDE?, how many APIs? to do What?).
One other thing... Net based OS for the phones.
Think about what will happen to those phones when a problem with the GSM or WI-FI network happens.
Or what happens when you are in a area without network at all?
And, here in Europe, when you go out of the country, and the roaming sucks all your bucks?
Net base services should never be critical, at the OS level...

If it was true I would gladly go more often to the gas station. This could cut global CO2 emissions a lot.

well... I posted a new idea about importing existing ubuntu accounts. http://brainstorm.ubuntu.com/idea/5320/
let's see if it rises some interest.

Why don't slashdot cut the access to foreigners? The site is in America, but it was taken by the world long time ago. Don't you be so isolationist.

the water in that lake has 10000 years (it's from the last glaciation), the water in Enceladus is there from the beginning.
The English version says nothing about this feature, hence, the other link... You know, some people can speak several languages.

From CIA Factbook https://www.cia.gov/library/publications/the-world-factbook/geos/us.html:
Military expenditures - percent of GDP: 4.06% (2005 est.).
Does this 4.06% (~530 billion dollars) of GDP (2006 est.) correspond to 21% of the federal budget?
If this is true, the federal budget represents ~2.524 trillion dollars, or ~19.3% of GDP... It seems a lot.

PCs are not vanishing, only the number of people that don't have one.
What is the point of a new computer when the existing one do the tasks you need.
