  1. Re:US centric blindness? on The Man Behind the Google Phone · · Score: 1

I think most of the people underestimates Windows Mobile (WM). They (M$) may have a small market share, but is the corporate share. WM comes with the expensive phones, and developers really use it to do things. I've said this to oblivion and I will continue: Currently, there is now real alternative to WM and Symbian if you want to develop a corporate application. They have good APIs, good IDEs, and yes Visual Studio is a good IDE, even if smartphone development is full of bugs. The above requirements are fundamental. If google produces an easy way to develop good applications (not the J2ME toys), then it may succeed. M$ is being underestimated with windows mobile...

In the cases of the above countries everyone sent help even without a formal agency. It seems that having FEMA is more of an excuse to be quiet in everyone's place, like with Katrina... You can think: well... FEMA will handle it, someone will, but it won't.
In case of a catastrophe wee all need to be more altruistic.
FEMA seems a lousy excuse to do nothing.

"How much cheaper is an ad-subsidized gPhone going to be in comparison to some relatively nice pre-paid phone?"

The real money in telecommunications is in paid services (cals, data, sms...).
If the ads are not intrusive (like an sms bombardment), they may increase the revenue (hence a cheaper device), but I think they are a complement for the main business plane... Google is already to much exposed to the advertising market. I think they want to diversify their revenue.

  6. Re:But the cell companies like control on Google Hopes to Disaggregate Carriers with gPhone · · Score: 2, Insightful

In Europe the majority of phones can be found unlocked, but they are also more expensive that way. Operators don't seem to care if a phone is unlocked and used in another operator. I don't remember to hear someone complaining about bricked phones... In the end is all about the price of the services they provide, not the devices.

The companies have the power given by the market regulator.
I think all consumers should complain more about the market regulator and less about the companies. They always try to maximise their profit. Its their obligation.

At an amateur level, J2ME is the best because is well documented, reasonable IDEs and free. It is not very powerful or fast, but it is simple and will do a lot of things.

At a professional level, Symbian and Windows CE/Mobile are the viable options. If you want to build a decent UI, get good performance and use decent IDEs and get lots of resources, that's the way.
Linux is the most promising new platform, but I tried to get into openmoko, as a useful hobby, but the development tools are a lot different of what I'm used to... It is taking a lot more time than I expected to learn the thing.

In Europe, being a socialist doesn't have anything to do with liberties. Liberty for the individuals is implicit in the concept of democracy, thus, all democratic parties should respect liberties.

Democratic Socialism is more about the creation of social safety nets and equal distribution of wealth.

Almost all Europe has public systems for education, health and social security. Those are fundamental socialistic achievements that even the European right wind (more like the democratic party in the US) agree with them.

High taxes... well everybody complains about them. Everywhere. To the efficiency problem in the public sector I oppose the profits of private companies, that, by the way, don't like poor people.

In the end, I think is better to use my taxes to teach and treat everyone for free... Less money to build bombers.

This subject has to much importance for this kind of light analysis.

Before I start, I must tell that I'm pro-open source and I don't like Microsoft or Apple.

The interesting point here is to create a good platform to support mobile computing. At the present moment the hardware standards are a mess and the software... In the last two years I've programmed in a lot of mobile environments like J2ME, Symbian and .NET Compact Framework, and I can tell you that the best one is .NET. J2ME is very limited, C++ for Symbian is very fast but the framework is unfriendly, taking a lot of time to develop an application. The compact framework from Microsoft is the more balanced and the one more used for B2B applications. .NET is supperb? no, but it works well and is gaining support from the industry.

Unfortunately there's no practical open source alternative to the previous 3, and it is a shame. Mono and openMoko are not yet mature and mobile ubuntu is still vaporware.

In the meanwhile everybody speaks about Apple's iPhone... I don't see over there a good platform for third party applications. I'm not sure if apple has the resources to develop a software platform like Symbian or the .Net Compact Framework... And without that my friends, in 10 years, it does not matter if linux is in every desktop, the majority of computers will be portable and they will run windows because the industry will make software for them. The same old story over and over again.

The community needs to pay more attention to mobile devices.
