Movie theaters get more and more expensive--I refuse to go to them anymore. I have a big screen at home and a nice surround sound setup. I have a clean bathroom a short walk away. I can pause the movie. I have access to my kitchen, food and drinks (including adult beverages). and the best part--nobody else to disturb me! So why would I go to the theater?
More and more people are staying home. They've been talking about releasing movies on DVD and in theater at the same time (or shortening the time to release).
With more people renting DVDs and staying home, they need to figure a way to make more money off this. Enter BluRay and HD-DVD!
Here's an idea, instead of buying the next steaming pile that hollywood shoves down your throat, GO OUTSIDE! WOW!! SUPER HD WITHOUT DRM! AND IT'S FREE!!
We need to stop caring about hollywood. I wish people would get a clue. All the star gossip, all the awards shows--who cares what brad pitt did last night? Does he care what I did? Why isn't anybody disturbed that these actors get paid millions, and then ON TOP OF THAT we have big award parties and give them awards as well! Then they shove their agenda down your throat (like YAY! FOR HOMOSEXUALS AL LA BROKENBACK MTN) Oh wait, the rant light just came on my keyboard... I better sign off.
Does our technology really get better? Or are these rings NEW? Are they some kind of weapon system that is slowly being assembled to strike the earth? I hear helicopters outside... yep--they're black
The problem with advertising on TV is how much money they expect to make. It's too much! Actors and actresses get paid far too much, as do all the people associated to them in Hollywood. There's no reason why they should be paid millions and millions of dollars for what they do. This comment is not aimed at the mythbusters--just TV people in general.
I loved the southpark that poked fun at the whole situation. It went something like "See poor Britney Spears? She had hoped to buy a new Learjet IV, but had to settle with a Learjet III because of piracy! See this guy wanted a gold plated swimming pool? He has wait an extra month before he can afford it!"
I don't mind paying for enterainment if it's worth it--but frankly hollywood has grown to some pretty high expectations at the expense of the average american. The problem is the average american is too stupid to not just blindly swipe their credit card. They just announced a change in bank law that makes the minimum payment on credit cards 4% instead of 2%. Why? Because americans are too stupid to not pay the minimum payment and be in debt forever!
So like...they almost sold the shares for way cheap... but they didn't... and that's newsworthy?
Isn't that like I almost formatted my C drive... but it errored out because the drive was in use.... WHEW! CLOSE ONE!
Didn't want to confuse the youngsters! LOL. I tried googling the Freak Bro's and I guess it's also a comic strip... about hippies... go figure!
I taught myself how to program in Turbo Pascal by modding a BBS called WWIV. When I got to High School I took a computer class that taught Turbo Pascal and me and my buddy were constantly correcting the teachers programs. I created a Turbo Pascal program that the school used to track detentions. They used to have a secretary type up a list every day and make copies to pass around to all the teachers. My program had the secretary enter all the info from the detention, and then it would print the list for the teachers. It would also let them print reports based on student (receiving detention) or teachers. Some teachers didn't like it because it showed that some of them gave an excessive amount of detentions. Of course if I was smart I'd be rich right now because I would have charged them for it and sold it to schools across the country, but somebody else did that.
I also remember my buddy had a 300 baud modem on his Apple IIe, and one BBS we called would just say "300 baud detected--F*** off l0ser!" When I got my 1200 baud modem it was the first BBS we called... and it turned out it was a Commodore 64 site!! Being Apple and Atari guys we hated Commies! Never had a modem with an acoustic coupler though.
There was a guy that ran a BBS called The Swamp I believe (he was swampman)--it ran wildcat and he somehow got it working over telnet. It was pretty cool. No idea where it is now though.
I couldn't imagine how fast my A64 3800+ X2 would compile a Turbo Pascal program!
My first PC was an Atari 1200XL. 64k of ram! Loved the fact he mentions ballblazer--that was an awesome game. Rescue on Fractulus was great too.
I had a 1200 baud modem, and I remember there was a cool terminal program (can't remember what it was called)--but you couldn't use it unless you soldered a couple of pins on the mobo. I was probably 12 years old, and on all kinds of local BBS (can't pay LD charges!). One of the websites was called "The Freak Brothers". Anyhow, these guys said they'd come over and solder my mobo for me. I was shocked when these guys showed up at my house (typical southern california suburb). They looked like a couple of hippy bums... long scraggly hair, yellow jacked up teeth, probably smoked a dooby on the way over. They soldered my Atari and it worked--and my dad offered them a beer and then they left. Really cool guys--but man was I shocked when I saw them!
Anybody who is still running netware fits in one of these categories:
1) They are too cheap to upgrade--"Hey, My NetWare 3.12 server still runs, why change it? My Windows 95 works with it just fine!"
2) They have a huge implementation--NetWare 5.1 rolled out to 700+ remote sites--"It will HURT if I upgrade!"
3) They are a die hard loyalist--"The only way bill gates will get my $$$ is prying it from my cold, dead hand!"
I remember when I just finished rolling out ManageWise at a oil & gas company and then found out they had 2 engineers working on it! Can you spell EOL?
and I loved how once they announced their linux direction, they reassured their customers "don't worry, NetWare won't be going away!" Ya right!
and of course it was hilarious that Novell products actually ran better and more stable on Windows and Linux then NetWare--not sure how that made sense.
My Novell customers either get migrated to Windows 2003 or Debian.
I don't go to the theaters much because I have a home theater setup. Besides the obvious benefits (better food, better drinks (including booze), ability to pause the movie, much lower cost, etc) the biggest issue with me is the annoying people in the theater.
The last movie I saw in the theater was the last Star Wars movie. I waited until the movie had been out for quite some time to avoid the crowds. This idiot couple sitting behind us talked and talked during the movie. We finally were fed up and turned around and shhhhhhhd them. They got all pissed off and a few minutes later moved. When I left the theater I realized my sunglasses fell off my head, and when I went back and looked they were gone. I know that couple stole them. I saw the girl pick something up off the floor right before they moved.
* Service was unavailable a lot
* Dropped calls
* Terrible customer service--can't get a hold of them
* They changed their config, then suspended my service because I didn't change mine. THEN they continued to bill me for it! I had to dispute one of the charges, they would not refund it even though they denied me service!
I use a phone line with an unlimited dial plan for $25/mo. Sure, it's not as slick technology wise, but it always works, and Cox even knows how to spell customer service!
So you mean actors might actually only make 6 or 7 figures per year instead of per episode? Boo hoo! I will NEVER feel sorry for hollywood not making enough money.
There will be no tear in my beer for them.
It's like that South Park episode about the RIAA. "Look, here's Britney Spears. Why is she so sad you ask? Well, she had her eyes set on a Gulfstream IV, but because people are downloading her music off the internet for free, she can only afford a Gulstream III now."
Long time reader, first time poster.
Just wanted to make this point. I bought HL1. I've been playing it for years (multiplayer mods).
I bought HL2. I was playing at 12:10am PST. The next day, at about 5pm, I rebooted my system, and couldn't log back in to steam. My game was unlocked, I had already played it, but I couldn't play because steam was down.
TWO HUGE ISSUES as a consumer:
1) If I pay for a game, I want to play it. If their server is down, or my internet connection is down, I need to be able to play the game (or use the app, whatever). If that's asking too much, I don't want their software. Just think if Microsoft required an active internet connection to run WinXP! It's just unacceptable on SO many levels.
2) If your buddy pirates the game and is playing it and you go to the store and buy it and can't, because Valve's servers are overloaded, I think that's sending the wrong message.
No Worries

It's an .exe and it's not playable? Who would bother downloading it? Not I!!
