Who paid for the advertisements that said "Buy BIG.", the TV ads that had a FATASS SUV climbing a mountain?
GM and Ford paid for these ads.
Did GM & Ford tell Congress that the tax rules favored working trucks and that some car buyers were taking unfair advantage of this? GM & Ford kept right on truckin'.
GM & Ford were here in the 70's when we all learned that oil would be scarce someday.
GM and Ford said "BUY BIG" ?
Ford put up two billion dollars for the advertising for the Taurus in the 80's. That was for the "advertising", not R&D or other stuff.
In 2003, Congress voted to put two billion in Hydrogen fuel cells for cars. Those two billion at Ford brought in lots of money, but Ford didn't use it for R&D for Hydrogen or anything except profits.
Follow the money. GM & Ford are FATASS socialists waiting for handouts.
They also have a built-in whipping boy in the auto-worker retirement contracts. What about lowering the top salaries to be at most twenty times the lowest salary? That's not the kind of socialism we like. We like the socialism that has the government bailing us out everytime we screw up.
The phrase "pie in the sky socialism" comes to mind because it is usually used to mock socialism, but in actuality "pie in the sky" has always been used to encourage workers to "keep on rowing" and delay gratification.
In the old days (pre-1973) when we went to apply for a mortgage, one income qualified us for a 15K house, whereas two incomes would get us that 40K house. The banker said, "the FHA/VA policy is that only one income can qualify, because pretty soon, the missus will be in a family way, and will have to stay home." "But no. We have the pill. Wahh Wahh wahh"
So the FHA/VA changed and the banker allowed two incomes and guess what? The 15K house went to 40K and the 40K house went to 95K, and when we couldn't make it on one income, we divorced, and left the house and kids to the wife.
The two income mortgage did more to destroy traditional family values and practices such as "parents being parents" than any amount of gay marriage or any other scapegoat.
The TV watches your kids when they come home. Kids learn by example more than any other way and the big lesson of the past twenty-five years is "Get more. Gimme more."
There is something to be said for that pre-1973 banker's wisdom. Also, that 15K house is still a 15K house, but it's listed price is 265K.
If we marked a paper ballot and then inserted it into a scanner, the scanner would show "This is your vote. Press Yes if you agree."
If Yes then the ballot is moved into a box and the tally is tallied.
At the closing of the voting day, several precincts are selected at random and their paper ballots are counted by hand. If the hand count agrees with the machine count, then the other precincts are counted via their machine counts and the vote count is published.
NB, no ballot counts are published until the hand count is verified.
This preserves the sanctity of the voter's vote. It has nothing to do with making "Bozo and Bozette at 6 and 10" happy.
I think the Americans have already acknowledged this point and are moving to do something about it...unlike Europe. It will be China or USA. I don't see any European country being a factor. That ship sailed 100 years ago.
Happy June 28th, the anniversary of the Treaty of Versailles of 1919. That treaty ended one sandbox fight between two of Queen Victoria's grandchildren. The winning grandchild and his friends got to divide up the backyard of the losing grandchild.
We're still playing in that sandbox.
So the optometrist says to the guy, "You should stop masturbating so much."
And the guy says "Why? Is it hurting my eyes?"
"No. You're making the other people in the waiting room uncomfortable."
540 miles per hour = 9 miles per minute = 4.5 miles per 30 seconds
The "30 second cone of 540 mph" is almost 5 miles.
The trash missed the cone by 5 seconds.
Whatever sells papers....
Chemistry 101 says that one gallon of gas will produce 20 pounds of CO2.
These 20 pounds of CO2 includes about 14 pounds of Oxygen which is not available for your wheezing mother's tank.
The other sources such as General Motors, Mobile-Exxon, American Tobacco say
"Go fuck yourself. We want the money."
Voter confidence is not a cost item like which brand of parking meter. It is too expensive to play with.
The voting should be done on paper - you "X" your choice or you bubble it in.
Then you feed it into a scanner which shows you how it will be cast and points out any over-votes or errors.
The you push a button and the paper is added to a stack and the vote is tallied.
Wait, there's more!!!! At 7 PM, the county draws five precint numbers from a hat and these five precincts must have their paper ballots hand counted in front of witnesses. When these five precincts are validated and their papers agree with the machine count, then we can see the reports from the other precincts.
The only persons inconvenienced by this are "Bozo and Bozette at 6 and 10". We really should not care if the stinking networks get their stinking stories in on time.
One other thing is that the scanned ballots can be online for inspection until forever.
One extra rule:
When the polls close, five precincts are selected at random and those ballots are counted by hand and all other ballots are held in "abeyance" until the five precincts are verified.
This might interfere with "Bozo and Bozette at 6 and 10" getting an early result, but the process here is voting, not grinning fools on the big screen.
Bush left Baghdad and said "Where's my bike?"
Rumsfeld said, "Don't worry. We'll find it."
Bush got to D.C. and saw his bike by the fence and called Rummy "Not to worry. I found Trigger."
Rummy said, "That's too bad. I have five confessions down at Gitmo."
Substitute WMD for bike, Stalin for Bush, Beria for Rummy.
One tenth of one percent for the perpetrators but it took about sixty percent of the bishops to do the shuffle.
This brings up Dante's Inferno which has some people in hell for sins of the flesh, but the hottest place is for those who broke a sacred trust.
BTW Cardinal Law got shuffled off to a swell church in Rome.

"Even and up" is the rule for comedians like Jack Benny.
Somehow the civil rights acts of the 60's make some people (white guys) think that everything is even now. It isn't even and you know it's not.

What's new?
The alphabet is free. Java was designed to be free, but MS fixed it so that non-MS versions would bomb on MS-Windows.
*we* didn't write it down because undeveloped film moves through customs much easier than notes.
